    I used to work in an office with 2 people who used to rescue outdoor plants from supermarket’s bin and plant them in public spaces during the night - I think they rescued this way both plants and sad concrete neighborhoods ❤️

    I saw a beautiful ceramic planter loaded with sansevieria/dracaena in the trash outside of a home. I quickly snatched it up before garbage truck arrived. It’s beautiful thriving and I split and shared with my sisters. Love this collaboration. 🇨🇦💚

    I'm reading George Monbiot's "Regenesis". The first chapter is all about soil and the myriads of microorganisms that live there. It's absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately not many people are aware of how immensely important those microorganisms are. Most people are also unaware that plants live in symbiosis with both mycelia and bacteria and that they all benefit from that symbiosis.

    • @TheJungleHaven
      @TheJungleHaven  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the book recommendation - I'll definitely take a look at that. You're so right about this, I think in the "sell-fast" commercial side of the houseplant market lots of things have been missed, and both buyers (and sellers in a lot of cases) are totally unaware about the correlation between soil health and plant health 💚

    • @onestrangeanimal3212
      @onestrangeanimal3212 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheJungleHaven I should probably add that the book is not about houseplants. It's a massively important book though. It's about how our current food production systems are destroying the soil and the world's ecosystems and then it goes on to present solutions for how we can keep feeding humanity without destroying our life support systems. I still haven't got to the solutions part though. But I was absolutely fascinated by the chapter about life in the soil.

    I've got a story of peace lily that I rescued years ago. There was this dead looking peace lily at a local market for $5 and I dunked it in water to give it a much needed drink. Even to this day, the plant is alive and thriving. It has even flowered for me a few times.

    OMGGGGG I've gotten some of my absolute favorite plants from the clearance section at Lowes. My Skindapsis moonlight, Calaethea Mosaica and birds nest fern all came home near death, and they are THRIVING now. It is definitely such a fulfilling experience.

    Some of my favourite plants are ones I've rescued over the years. I have a spider plant that had been knocked off a window sill and left for a few weeks behind a filing cabinet where I used to work. That plant has been thriving for about 10 years now, and I've given away loads of its babies.

    I love this! I started with houseplants this past summer, now upwards of 100 plants. I always stop at the big box stores and pick the ones that are headed for the trash. I’ve only lost a couple over the past few months. I watch videos on the plants I bring home and learn to care for them. I’m so in love with this hobby.

    I was given a 5ft Yucca that needed alot love and debugging and I happy walked it home in a cart I borrowed from an elderly woman. I'm proud to say not only has it grown another 2ft but the pothos I planted with it is sizing up beautifully. Let's all normalize rejuvenating the beautiful things nature has created.

    I'm a part of a facebook group titled (rough translation) "garbage truck is coming" and the idea is to give up things you'd otherwise trash. I got loads of plants of it. Not only rescues, sometimes people give up healthy plants because they grew too big, or they simply don't like it anymore. Such a cool idea. Got my monstera that way. I'm also a part of local plant exchange group, and that's another great idea. I got some cool plants in exchange for my excessive cuttings.

    I’ve noticed a couple plant shops in my state lately that offer a discounted rehab section. It’s definitely a more common thing to have in rarer plant shops where even their imperfect inventory has quite a bit of value. And plant collectors are also more willing to buy imperfect plants (rehabs, chonks, cuttings, tiny plants) in order to get more affordable plants. I actually recently bought two rehabs that have leaf damage from the cold spell in florida and they were significantly cheaper than you could normally buy the plants for and they have really healthy root systems.

I’ve seen so many healthy plants thrown away… Just a couple of days ago at my local big box shop I saw a big cart of orchids that finished flowering, but were completely perfect plants otherwise, getting ready to be trashed. And employees didn’t even let me take them when I asked :(

      @@ilyachap Ilya, I feel your pain, and I agree... I work at one of these giants that throw away rather than give away, how do you think I ended up with nearly 500 plants? and I can't stop buying... Even for members of staff, giving away is not that simple.
      But if you see a plant that clearly looks below standard - and say this to everyone - don't be afraid of asking if there is something to be done about the price, "becuase this plants is..." the worst that can happen is a "no" and if it is a plant that I clearly can see is suffering, I know how low I can go... if I can see that you are genuine, you might get a better bargain than you hope for. (I hope this post doesn't cost me my job 😬😬😬😬😬😬)

    My weirdest, yet favorite, plant is a rescue cactus I have had for twenty years. It had broken off and put up a side-pup. That had grown at least two feet. The combined height was over four feet. The poor thing, I’d never repotted it in all that time. One of my former art students who came to my retirement party told me how to cut off the pup and root it, and now it’s spectacular. I potted the rooted bit in a tall pot, and I keep wondering if it just keeps sighing in relief from the space and comfort of its new life style.

    Really good idea. I always try to save any dying plants rather than throw away and rebuy. It's actually quite satisfying to bring one back, they want to live!!
    It sounds a bit tragic but I feel sad for the unhealthy looking plants in shops, thinking it's never going to get chosen, sit there months then get thrown away. If only all stores offered them at a discount, B and Q and Sainsbury's I'm looking at you.

My antherium was also a wilko job 5 for to 2.50. It had one leaf with a split that was 6 or 7 years ago ita now huge and still beautiful.
    I get plants for my garden from the discount parts as mostly all they need is to dry out or a good water.
    I don't have loads of money and like to bring them back its so satisfying and I feel accomplished when plants bounce back not that I do anything its the plants will to live.
    This is amazing more people need to save plants.

    I had zero idea that Caladiums go dormant and just threw a gorgeous one in the trash because every leaf died and I thought the whole plant was dead. :( I feel awful now.

    It's very rare that anyone has a plant that they're throwing out in my area.😞

      I've found plants sticking out of bins and skips before, so keep your eyes open. Local facebook groups can also be a great way to discover plants that might be looking for a new home 💚

    I want to get it but I dont get it. If I have a plant go down hill I will try to save it to a point but there comes a day that I will just throw it and If I want another I will buy another. Maybe cause I buy a lot of TC babies and I find that some of them are just weak and fail to thrive. When it comes to common plants I just see not reason to save them. There are so many out there why would I want something ugly sitting in my home when I could just buy another for 5 euros and it looks amazing. I suppose if it was something more rare I would put in more effort and really baby it to get it back up and going but for most plants I couldnt be bothered.
