As an avid orchid grower, I can understand the 'meh' with respect to the supermarket phalaenopsis, but the wider family has a vast array of forms & colours (leaves & blooms)... and scents - don't write them all off.

I adore Cymbidiums! I have too many Phalaenopsis orchids and they aren't "meh" to me. I do love them, they are all pushing up flower spikes now, but if I could get Cymbidiums to thrive in my home, I would have them everywhere! My best friend lives in So Cal, US, and grows them as foundation plants. There was an orchid house in my area, so I have owned many other varieties, Vanda, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, to name a few, and I murdered them all, poor things!, which I find so puzzling, because I own some very difficult Aroids that grow great guns for me. I'm bewildered!

I probably haven't taken the time to properly get to know them cause I'm so put off by the supermarket ones. One of my friends has a bat flower orchid which is pretty cool, and very different. Who knows, maybe I'll delve into the orchid world at some point 😂

As an avid Miss Orchid Girl watcher I was bound to get obsessed with non phalaenopsis orchids at some point. (I've seen too many phalaenopsis chuz my mom ONLY had those. Like, 15 of them). I especially enjoy Phychopis and Arachnis Orchids!! They are just GORGEOUS! I have 16 different orchids now, and I only have 1 phalaenopsis (the shilleriana, I love the mottled leaves).

every sensitive fern i had , it died when i brought it home, so i chopped the stems and it regrew and it was fine. Ferns are sensitive to change in environment however their roots are extremely resistant. Which means when environment changes, they kill off the stems and stay dormant for a bit, then they regrow adapted to the new environment. That can even happen when you move it to a different spot in your home.

@@kayciblizzard2742 when it comes to plants one thing I've learnt in general is to never throw away a plant even if all the foliage is dead. I only call the plant dead after I do a root inspection 1 week after the loss of foliage. If after 1 week the roots are still alive I give it another chance to regrow. If after 1 month nothing regrew and the roots are dead then I throw it. 70% of my plants survived full loss of foliage.

Yep, the fern is likely still fine if the roots aren't doing anything weird - they're great at dropping all of their leaves and then pushing new ones better suited to the new environment. Plenty of people throw Maidenhairs out, for example, when really they need to be chopped back to soil level and left. It's likely just it's reaction to the change in environment. Good luck

Absolutely agree with your comment on the ferns. The Pteris type ferns need to be chopped back to thrive. I have two different types of maidenhair that threw a tantrum when brought back inside for the winter, but once I chopped them back, they rewarded me with new, beautiful, delicate growth. They now live in my humidity cabinet and look soooo good!

Hi Claire love your channel and content. I'm in Melbourne, Australia and grow my plants indoors in winter and outdoors under a green house in summer. I too have struggled with ferns, some are semi aquatic which no one talks about. Chop off the dead fronds, enclose it in a plastic bag to keep high humidity in a warm sunny area, and when it starts to sprout place it on a saucer where you can keep it moist all the time. Good luck

Claire, I’m definitely on the same page with you regarding staying away from adding colorful plants and l my collection. I love the natural patterns and diverse variations of green plants. I like the jungle vibe, and uniqueness of leaf structure. Insofar as what I’m avoiding, moving forward it will be ANYthing that attracts thrips and other pests. I’m staying away from plants that are difficult to keep alive - it’s like throwing money down the drain when I could’ve invested in a plant with staying power!😅 If I’m calling out specific varieties, no more syngoniums, they bore me nowadays despite the variations. Also avoiding Verucossum type plants, and anything with thin leaves (almost always temperamental with light and water requirements). I’m also pretty much committed to WAITING it out for a few months to see if I really want to add a specific plant to my collection, and allowing the price to decrease - it ALWAYS does plant people!

You are not alone, I have always had a strong preference for green since I was young. I much prefer green foliage plants (anthuriums, alocasia and monstera are my 💚's) and only have a couple of colourful ones (dahlias outside)
I think it's a very good way to view things only hanging on to plants that bring joy and that you love and letting other people take over ones that weren't meeting that need in you. It's hard to put a black and white description for it but I feel a kind of 'rapport' with my fav ones. I use a super chunky mix and water thoroughly when completely dry. I wait for the leaves to curl slightly before watering. I find this is tricky though. If I wait too long I lose a couple of leaves from letting the plant dry out too much 😕. I also put them in bright indirect light. I have three large trebuii moonlights. Two are beside east facing windows and the third is near a south facing. I do not supplement humidity and they seem to tolerate that well. I killed my favourite beautiful maidenhair fern 3 times. It was a plant for 2 weeks. Last summer I've tried a fourth one. It started to dry out like others. But this time I wanted to figure out how in the world...
I've watched so many videos. And 2 videos were my key to a beautiful plant. First one said, fern gets new growth. It needs SUN!!! No halfsun half shadow half anything. It needs light, bright light.
Second video was from India after monsumrain. Woman collected fern with roots out of the fern-wall. She left all of them over night in a small vase with water, to plant them in soil by the next day. Some of this plants didn't reach the water just a night long, were dried out immediately. No humidity in the vase safed them. Plants get water over their roots - point.
So my conclusion was: try to water it each day.
Et voilà, my plant became so huge since last summer. Bright light + water each day (now in the winter every second, don't wait longer) = magnificent maidenhair fern.

You are loving a neutral backdrop. In design, we often create a neutral backdrop, accented with bright or colorful accents. This scheme replicates nature, but when we create a special space for ourselves it reflects current passion. This can change over time. Let your development come in a natural flow. Some individuals do not ever change. This is as it should be. Don't question it!

I feel that with the Scindapsus “moonlight.” I do still like mine but for quite some time I wanted the dark form too cause photos were cool & I felt like I needed to “complete the collection” but I recently had the opportunity to finally buy the dark form but I ended up walking around the store with it in my hand for like a half hour before I put it back & grabbed something else because all I could think about is how slow my Moonlight grows. Maybe I’ll get the dark form one day but I’ll need to find a more established plant vs the 2 leaf plant I almost bought.

I'm a horticulturist and the best advice I give anyone is to look at the plants you want to buy and grow in their normal environment, analyse the plant's natural environment and work out soil type etc, remember you might not be the problem but how the plant was potted up before you bought it etc.
do not do what other people are doing unless they are pros like myself. by all means, ask summer Rain she knows her stuff if its possible call her.

I completely agree around the treubii moonlight. I got a 2 leaf cutting and it's been unfurling the 3rd leaf for months. I just put it in with my exotica so I don't forget about it as much.
I've combined a lot of plants in the last couple of months such as a couple of Epipremnum (aureum, neon, Pinnatum, marble queen) and heart leaf Philodendron (scandens, brasil, micans lime) and Syngonium (albo, mojito, Ngern lai ma) and that helps with keeping the care down while still owning more species. And I love the variety in one pot. Especially when it's the same leaf shape in different colours/patterns.
Also had a lot of Tradescantia when I started and now I only have one that soon will be moving to a friend. That was totally a fase.
Now I am in the velvet Philodendron fase and slowly getting into Anthurium but I don't want a cabinet so that keeps the options limited.
Some plants I really like when I see them around but I just don't feel the desire to have them. And sometimes I give in and buy them and end up giving them away..

Claire, your video makes sense to me, most plants come from super perfect grow houses, so your pteris albolineata may just have suffered from shock, how about cutting your losses and cut all foliage away, and see what it does? also its winter, whatever it will do, it will do it slowly lol
For plants with high variegation or that tend to go full moon, look at the youtuber "pretty in green", I found him a few days ago, and as my monstera standleyana is going full moon, I'm trying his suggestion today for the first time as I don't want to loose it. I have nothing to loose, cos full moon plants can't photosynthesise as you mentioned yourself. here is the link:
    th-cam.com/video/c6dL0OsUo_Q/w-d-xo.html
I would love your syngonium albo 🙈🙈🙈🙈 or a cutting of... the same for the scindapsus moon shine and the Philodendron Aff & Lupinum ...
I'm with you on the phalenopsis thing, they are gorgeous when in flower, then they spend a year doing .... gathering dust.
The spider mites on your Philodendron Aff are a pain indeed, have you ever tried neem oil? it works for me, I'm on the ground floor and get a plethora of bugs, neem oil is the only insecticide I use and working in the garden centre industry i have tried a few...
One last thing I'd like to add; we often say that plant A or B doesn't like me, in my case is Begonia Rex, its not a case that plants don't like us, its in my opinion more top do with the fact that we can't offer them suitable accommodation. And that's why I say that your pteris came from a perfectly perfect green house and suffered shock, cos your home has different parameters that are not perfectly perfect lol

My huge success with this beautiful fern is I'm afraid, richly undeserved. It is growing (Not without a degree of condescending exuberance.) in the only part of my tropical jungle garden which had never benefitted from my botanical expertise. Indeed, I only noticed it rising out of a cloud of native maiden hair because of the drama unfolding nearby - where a young monitor lizard was taking flying lessons as it attempted to consume a bat twice its size. This Pteris would appear quite precocious as it is attached, via a mat of fine roots, to the top of a volcanic-rock wall high above a raging river - in fabulous equatorial Bali. Here it enjoys gentle air movement, 100% atmospheric humidity, very dappled but bright light, minimal substrate, no fertilising, and 100% free-drainage - combined with moisture on demand from the very porous pumice-type stone it resides upon. Hard to replicate for any length of time indoors in a pot of compost I imagine, but judging from the quality of your other plants, I would say - not impossible.

And it was an absolute fav. Mayyyyyybe I might try again, but I highly doubt it. It killed me inside to watch her die ! Moving forward for the most part is considered progress. There are many plants I admire in someone else’s home, however, I know those plants are not right for me. 😊 We’ve all had plants that no longer bring us joy and that’s okay. I have an aversion to really colorful plants as well. I wonder if it has something to do with the bright colors of poisonous things in nature that puts us off on a subconscious level. Also, I will add I was on the same page with my Scindapsus Moonlight. I sold one and then later decided to try again because I do love the color. The second one I purchased does not stop growing. I have three or four new leaves coming out at any given time and had to re-pot it 2 months ago to try and get it to slow down, which it has a bit.

Try some pretty foliage orchids. It's a shame not to explore this side. I'm guessing, from the way you grouped all orchids together, that you haven't experimented a lot. That being said, I would recommend that you look into these:
    - Paphiopedilum Maudiae Femma Green, it has mottled leaves, only opens one bloom per mature growth, and the bloom itself is not super colorful, it's also unusual enough that you don't see it at the doctor's 😂 but not super rare to the point where it would be difficult to replace
    - Phalaenopsis Odorium, another mottled leaf orchid that looks very pretty in a mostly green collection, and the blooms are not super brightly colored, but they do have a very nice scent that I think is close to lilies of the valley
    - Beallara (Alicera) Tahoma Glacier Green, this is a pretty big orchid, the flowers are once again a bit more green and not super bright, and it has a soapy smell that's very fresh
    - Vanilla Planifolia is the vanilla orchid, it looks like a philodendron, grows very much like a tropical climber, and will take a few years before it blooms so you get plenty of time to decide if you love it or not

I also don’t love croton, I really don’t love it. One year my husband got it for me for Mother’s Day as an outside annual and he loved it, I thought it was cool outside and I have a pastels mostly colorful outdoor garden, but for inside it irks me. I also just don’t love the colors. I grow naturalized flowers for my area and I don’t really love the bright colors exotic look. I don’t even like non green plants inside I came to realize over time. that first one you showed, needs misting every day, Crotons are hard to keep alive, they need a lot of sun, and they get mealy bugs ALMOST every time i ever had one, so i never bought another one, i tried 5 times, so i gave it to my son, he did great with it, but not me, ughh and no 3, root in water, works every time, any philly will, caladiums are hard to grow for me, not indoors no way.i love that syngonium green and while, oml i would kill for that, haha, love it. chop up one you really dont like, that silver one put in water, they will indeed grow quicker. and sell the cuttings, not a fan or orchids either but i grew them in water with glass beeds, they were pretty but no flowers, and i love and always will have the wandering jew, they are so so easy to grow, i dont like big leafed house plants other than Monstera , especially philly, i tend to love the tiny ones, to get rid of spider mites, take the plant out of the soil, throw it away and wash the plants leaves with cold watere and soap, spider mites come from soil most of the time, the only thing that i do love that i absolutely have horrible luck with are african violets, they demand too much care, my favs are snake plants and hoyas now, and i was given 2 Monstera plants when my son died in jan of 2022, and i absolutely love them, hoya i struggle with those unless i grow them in water , because grown in soil for me, they are so bad about mealy bugs, i bought 7 new ones recently that i love but i will have to check them non stop to keep that issue at bay, my new love is aloe of all things, i bought 5 new ones that are not the plain old ones, pretty rare ones and very thick leaves and i am in love with them, but my love for snake plants will always be my very favoriets and pothos, always

There's a feeling of relief seeing plant youtubers kill plants (as unfortunate as it is on your part) because it reminds me that no matter how experienced you are, you'll never be able to keep every plant 100% happy in your care, and you can still kill plants. Philodendron lupinum has a bad rep because of people's poor experiences with it, but I don't know, even the juvenile form with its exaggerated wide heart shape and the strong red abaxials still make me want to give it a go, it's my version of other people buying the melanochrysum even though those are notorious for stuck and warped new growth. And I would recommend others to buy jewel orchids and skip the tradescantias - they look more visually interesting without looking fake, they feel better wiith their velvet texture, they're a good substitute if you're looking for a plant with the same growth pattern and leaf shape as the tradescantia, and jewel orchids also flower!
Plants I'm never buying again: rhaphidophora tetrasperma - I killed mine because I buried its stalk which you're apparently not supposed to do, and the leaves didn't really bring me joy to begin with, I only bought them because I felt like they were a "must have" in every plant collection
Philodendron 69686 - this was something I've had to realize along my plant journey, but plants with strange leaf shapes don't wow me as much as plants with interesting texture and color. I don't hate the plant, but seeing it just gives me the "that's it?" vibes. I'm much happier now with my monstera peru and anthurium radicans for their textured leaves
Any scindapsus - scindapsus exotica was my gateway to houseplants, but I killed it when its leaves started wilting -not curling, wilting, out of nowhere. I was nee to the hobby so I looked for advice on the internet, but everybody seems to have only experienced curling and not dry withering of the leaves. Since then I figured that I'd never buy a scindapsus again unless I know how to solve the problem that killed my first one
