    dang it, I wish I could go back in time! my grandfather had a set of these in the red shed. he wasn't around to tell us what they were, and my dad didn't care to know that life. what a rotten shame. I miss my Poppa; thanks for taking me back AND explaining the weird looking silverware, lol!

    Instead if the pig tail why not draw it out to a long taper and turn the tip in at a 90 degree angle? Same principle as a rat spear and ice chisel of the 18th century. Have built several two prong gigs like that for carp. Just a thought.

      +German Survivalist (Dante Briefs) I am not trying to put Dave down, but I am a novice blacksmith, and I have done almost all the stuff he has made. Although I have NOT mastered the art of forge welding. The rest is pretty easy. Good luck in your efforts.

    Cool video! Does your propane tank ever freeze up? Mine freezes up after only about an hour or two of forging.

    Would it be possible to have a video of using the gig and cooking the frog?
    Also, would it make more sense not to have spikes in a line, but a triangular pattern? I can think of a few reasons why not, but would like to hear people's opinions.
    For those of you trying to smith this, a small advice. For David is probably comes as a second nature, so I have not heard him comment on it, but being a semi-competent (very not competent, but learning) smith I keep running into the issue:
    When you split the iron into small spikes, having thinner "rods", it takes much less time to heat. Please be careful because if you overheat the small spikes you risk having them crumple and flake/fall off the iron. In that case you have restart the entire process.
    Out of curiosity I've tried to salvage the iron that was overheated and found out its pretty hard. Even if you let it cool, or cool it with water, the damage is already done, and the iron will be weaker the next time you try to pound it.

    Wonder if you could make a socket tang by forge welding a piece of solid barstock an inch inside a piece of steel tube, then flare the tube out a bit with that bick you hold in the post vice?

    I don't think that rebar would harden, unless you have some really high carbon rebar.

  • @AMBowers29
    @AMBowers29 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    ha. even though I know the actual time between him brushing the metal off and sticking it in the vise to finish the length is enough to cool the metal, the video shows it in seconds and my heart jumped thinking he is burning his fingers off. ha

    I think rebar has so little carbon in them that they are not going to harden. You can quench it but it does not harden.

    • @jguitarz1
      @jguitarz1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jorgamund07 'm sure it would hold tight as long as the point of the stick/pole that your using is cut right which should not be an issue.
      I noticed he had a few that were to slide on,I have a few that I drilled a hole through for a nail etc works great.

    Who sells that rounding hammer that you use?

  • @johnhurt7255
    @johnhurt7255 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why does he bang the hammer on the metal after he hits the steel?

    • @nerblebun
      @nerblebun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm far from an expert, but I've been told that bouncing the hammer off the anvil gives it some upward momentum so the blacksmith doesn't have to use quite as much strength every time he lifts it. Considering how many times a day a blacksmith lifts a hammer, after a day of pounding steel even a small bit of help would be appreciated.

      Grandpa the Grey That does make sense because the one time I tried to smith something at a buddies house it was really freaking hard.
