Personally I don't see this being race discrimination, but rather colorism. Colorism started in India during the British rule, where the fairer you are the more value they added to your life as a human. It's something that has prevailed.

So this is the thing about India and other Asian countries...we are very judgmental when it comes to skintone. This has nothing to do with race and everything to do with class. Asia was and still is very much an agricultural based continent. People with fairer skintones back in the day represented rich because the poor worked in the fields and got darker. The opposite is true for Western countries where you see people actively trying to get a tan because that represents they have travelled out of the country (rich) and been to places with lots of sun. I'm not saying that there is no racism in India but please understand that it's not limited to foreigners but darker skinned Indians as well.

    • @manashdb

Having said all that, I feel like there's a need for Indo-africans like the Siddis as well as biracial blacks and expats to form a group that supports them, bring them together as well as spread a positive image to other Indians. A lot of Indians are ignorant and I can't emphasize that enough because it's 1.4 billion people and more than half of the population falls under this ignorant category. Then there are those who are hateful towards others on purpose, there are bad people amongst us as well and there's no denying that. Lastly there are those who would love to help these black people feel welcome and feel included and let them know that they have friends.

I can only imagine how this was shocking and unjust and this also was built by a British concept that Indian were more Humans then African people, which is certainly not a justification but rather a part of where it might come from.

Havent you read the stories of Africans being killed in India you can find them if you search for them on google. Also the expulsion of Indians in Uganda wasnt unprecendented. Burma also kicked out more than three times the number of Indians from the country in 1964. Again you can research this. More than 300,000 Indians were expelled from Burma. Another Asian country did this to Indians so why dont Indians speak about this like they try to guilt trip Africans and black people in general for what Idi Amin did?

For a country where one of the most revered God literally means 'black one' (Krishna) and one of the most worshipped Goddess is literally 'The black mother' ( Kali Ma), we have developed, especially in North India, some strange fetish about skin tone. However it can't be denied that more than racism it is colourism which is prevalent and that too not from hate point of view. Can't be justified, but it is actually a lot more casual. People (especially not so educated) are just ignorant and don't realise it can be hurtful. People do have stereotypes about people of colour (both white and black) but can it be called racism?

As an indian, In this 1.4 billion populated country i could say colorism does not play that much role here
There is black indian, white indian, asian looking indian, brown skinned many colors in India they will be treated as same.
But You would be uncomfortable if you were a foreigner . whatever race you belong to white, asian, black you will be alienated because of the strong culture practiced here.
Eg: most people in India think white British guy or black African guy or Japanese Asia guy are alienated ..
In my perspective India has a caste issue, religion issue , language issue and social status issue colorism might be last among all these

We stare at other indians alot too if they're interesting. We just like to people watch on a national level. Its mostly out of curiosity, not malicious nor are we getting ready for a fight. It's just the way we are, we look alot if we find people interesting or just people who are different. *Sorry about that. 😅 But please don't take that trait to heart. Spread it around too! In school, kids usually dont call other kid by their name, but a new name is given to every kid based on their colour, height, the way they talk, religion, the way they look etc, but no body does it with hatred, it is done only because they like you. I never thought, calling kalia, chinki, mallu, madrasi, pakistani, motu, patlu etc was hatred. This was absolutely normal and fun in 80s, 90s and at least till 2010. I believe kids these days are complaining for everything, they have stopped enjoying these things.
I have been called by so many names and I have called people by so many names and we all enjoyed.not sure if its the movies people watch these days or what that they feel insulted for everthing.

When kids are allowed to say insensitive things it will eventually follow them through adolescence and then adulthood. I think that's cuz lot of traditional, rules, culture clashed with each other's clans. Like people living like jains will feel hard to adjust in family having different dietary habits and vice versa. Or someone who think eating with hand is gross vs family who take pride in using hands. Or some clan where people wake up early in morning and do rituals like Pooja or Tulsi worship vs a family where rituals aren't given priority. Language and regional society also makes clans incompatible with each other. Indian society is family originated. So that's why it's said ,you are not only getting married to one person but also embracing whole family. That's why we give value to every relative's feelings and opinions. A kid take advice of uncles, cousin grandpas, aunts, grandmas, maternal uncles etc . In such a case , diverse family values will be hard to understand. Faith and common culture is what ties us together. We are proud bharatiya but I understand why clan system worked the way it did. Also some communities don't like certain communities because of tribal wars and community clash back in days.
Most of time it's not about jaati vaad or caste system, some clans or communities are not preferred by other communities (mostly richer) because of their past. Past is not something to be forgotten easily. You can still work for your future while keeping your past experience In mind. We are no different in modern world. Rich clans are blamed for their ancestors (how we assume each and every family did that) possibly opressed certain clans but we are doing same under disguise of victim card. Like how crime against memeber or rich family is ignored but any randomly crime happens against a member of certain clan becomes a major issue. The caste system still works but difference is ,poor clans are one openly abusing people of certain priest class who didn't even do anything wrong. It is like saying, just because invaders invaded india,we should eliminate everyone sharing their surname and faith.

The racism and Colourism was brought by the British to India during their 200 year colonial rule in India , They acted and Administered as they belongs to some superior race held and handcrafted by God himself , they treated Indians as the worst of creature with all racial features , After British left India ( India were poor and illiterate at that time) , The long rule made Indian subjected to exposure of Colourism as a superiority , This Hangover of "Superiority" made some Elite North Indian/Governing administrative authorities (which were fair in colour and working under the British) acted as superior to south Indians ( Dark in colour) and The caste System in India and the western influence made it worst , But with education and literacy , people are getting to know the Evils of Colourism and Racism , the young generations in cities like Mumbai , Delhi etc are quite friendly and modern with their thoughts and perceptions

At my last job here in Virginia, there were Indians from different parts of India. There were some with lighter skin color and some with darker skin color. One day, one of the lighter skinned Indian told me that if this was back in India, all of the black skinned Indians would be his assistants rather a manger. I also learned from another Indian that the black skinned Indians in the southern states are more educated than their lighter counter parts in the northern state.

If one can't accept for the way they are..the problem is within.
We Indians call you for what you are because, it is normal for us and not discrimination.
If you are black and they call you white then you should get offended.
We have got names for everyone.
It is blessed to be called with the name of godess for being black.
We will call white people as ghosts.
    Mostworst thing is
when an Indian is named as british for being white.
& calling North East Indians as Chinese.
Yet a friendly gesture but, literally frustating one 😂
Anyway it is not about color or race , it is all about loyality ,honesty, Fun that matters to us.
Don't get offended for silly things . If you don't like them to call you for what you are don't deny them. Just accept for what you are and love yourself.
In India , one can't escape from these names either in their own house.
When you accept it, you will know the beauty of it.
Only loved one's and carring affectionate people will call you with these unique names.

I have to disagree with some of the people in the comments. This is not just about colourism. Racism IS an issue in India, it's just that the number of black people in India is really really low, and so our interaction with this topic is super rare. Racism in the Indian context normally pertains to people with East Asian features because that represents a much larger chunk of Indian society. North-East Indians experience racism on a daily basis despite being natively Indian. There's also alot of Tibetan refugees, Chinese immigrants, and Nepali/Bhutanese people living here who are treated terribly. Racial discrimination against black people is definitely something Indian media and the public needs to talk about. I remember reading an article about a black couple that got kicked out of their apartment because people started making up stories about how they consume human flesh.

India is not very welcoming of dark-skinned people. Ironic, that the name "colorist" Indians call dark skinned people, is the name of one of their goddesses, who happens to be dark. And they say it in a derogatory way.
Some of the nice ones will be less nice if you pick romantic or marital interest in a fair-skinned Indian.
Then their Caste System which is thousands of years old, might be a contributing factor.
I hope unbiased Indians can educate us, because it seems that the higher the caste, the less dark-skinned people you find.

Yes, it's true. Higher the caste, more light skinned are the people. That's why you see such diversity in skin color in india. Many brahmins(higher caste) people are considered the true descendants of aryans, and have light skin colors like turkish or Israeli people. Where as the lower caste people, are actually native to india and have darker skin tones. India also consists of many tribes, so they also have darker skin tones. It's not as easy to classify indian colorism because there are so many socio cultural factors that come in here. There are Indians who look just as dark, or even darker than east Africans. So whenever people see dark skinned people they associate it with lower caste. I can tell you with experience that Indians who are dark skinned face the SAME racism that these Africans in india are facing. It's not particular to Africans. The colorism is to the extent that, the God you mentioned to be dark skinned( lord Krishna) isn't even portrayed to be a dark skinned person. Everywhere you search lord krishna, you will find pictures of him with blue skin. Just to Indicate that he isn't from the lower caste. This is actually because of the idealogical divide between early vedic period and later vedic period.

Caste system has nothing to do with Color! Why would you say that? There have been many historical people who happened to be of higher caste and also happened to be of darker tone!
Acharya Kautilya Vishnugupt Chanakya (from 4th century BCE) who belonged to the Highest caste was dark toned!
I've a neighbor whose skin tone way more darker than any African I've ever seen also happens to be from Highest caste.
Even Our Supreme God Krishna was Dark toned! So caste system had nothing to do with skin color!

It's not about colour in India it's More about what your caste is.
As an Indian person with little dark tone in my childhood other children think about different in colour and not play with you but it's not that when you grow up you have no chance in grouping with other people.
And about marriage and stuff people can't go against their parents because of arrenge merriage.
And when approaching to other people what matters most is how your behaviour and how confident you are is.
And Indian people don't really approch women because girls are too scary for man to handle. ( Women ☕ )
