      I like the HP more, the Dell looks sleeker but I prefer the cooler aesthetic of those angles in the HP's design. The soldered-on drive in the Dell is a dealbreaker for me. But the most important thing that makes the Hp take the cake is definitely the wallpaper! Can you link it? 😂

    • @NotApplicable2874
      @NotApplicable2874 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Based on the prices you showed in the video, the Dell isn't available for 900$. The cheapest is 1000$ with 4 GB, but most people would need to go even more expensive for the 8 GB.

    "4GB on a $999 is being disrespectful to the consumer" - thank you for this Dave. I don't know why nobody else talk like this. Also, 128GB non-upgradeable SSD on any laptop is disrespectful.

      And not even "non-upgradeable". Your entire SSD is also completely destroyed and all data is UNRECOVERABLE if any other major motherboard part fails (CPU, RAM, VRM). It's a whole lot of fucking trust and nobody, not Dell, not Apple, etc. is good enough to ask for that bulllllshit. Data should not be held hostage against consumers on consumer-level hardware.

    For anyone interested in these devices I would really recommend to go with HP Spectre. In 2017 I got one of these badboys. I got 13inch spectre with 8gb of ram and 260gb SSD. To this day I use it daily, battery life still holds up for about 6-9hours of light use. I do programming on it and its amazing. I love it and the next laptop I am going to buy will be HP. For touchscreen I would recommend it only for people who read alot because it is way easier to use it as a tablet when you study.

Not the most powerful laptop on the market, & Iris XE graphics don't stack up to a modern 3050Ti in some laptops, but the 4k OLED is too stunning to give up! I'm loving this laptop so much i'm about to upgrade the 1TB SSD to 2TB to future-proof it (I just wish the RAM could be upgraded too).

    If anyone is considering buying the xps 15 2in1 (9575):
    I am in medical school and i used the xps for every lecture in first year. I wrote down notes with the pen but after a time i just didn't like the feeling because of the high latency.
    That's why i now just use it as a regular laptop for medical school.
    In my free time i'm doing photography and graphic design, that's why i chose the 15" model (for the better performance).
    I actually would not recommend this 2in1 device...it's good to have the opportunity to use this laptop as a tablet, but in practice, you will be probably just using it as a regular laptop. I would rather recommend buying the regular 15"/13" model and saving up the money for something else🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @dmitryburlakov6920
      @dmitryburlakov6920 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Min Gyu I wouldn't agree about pen, overall pen experience is not that good but you should understand what it's for. Even a good pen with touchscreen will unlikely replace you a Wacom drawing tablet, but it's enough for prototyping (maybe it's because I've played with pen modes but I can't see much delay, it's just feels non precise and uncomfortable). It's definitely not for daily notes I think, more for some digital drawing mockups as I see. Something that XPS 2-in-1 buyers should be aware of is that Dell's software is a complete piece of garbage. Pen settings is worst app ever existed, default power settings are so bad that you won't be able to watch a video normally, it cannot go modern sleep and it's lid just can't wake it up which is so annoying considering you need to waste half a minute to wake it up. Not great, not terrible, I would think of Surface laptop better for pro use and iPad for notes.

    I made an expensive mistake by buying the Dell XPS 2-in-1. I would dearly love to send it back, but it’s too late. I have the HP Spectre X360 on order. Your review captures most of the downside I experienced with the Dell. One difference - I got the 4K display. My new Spectre will have the FHD display. I haven’t been able to get used to the MagLev keyboard. It is difficult to use for any period of time because of the extra force you have to use to press keys. My typing error rate is much higher. The 4K screen is pretty, but it sucks the battery. To get 4-hour battery life, you have to turn the brightness way down. I can’t live with 4 hours of battery life.
    The lack of a USB-A port means that almost everything you plug in has to be done via a dongle or an adapter. There are two devices I use regularly that don’t come in USB-C variants: Logitech Unifying Receiver for my mouse and the receiver for my headset. Yes, I know I could use Bluetooth but it doesn’t work as well as the native plug-ins for these two frequently used devices. I have to use an adapter which means they stick out very far. I hate that.
    I travel frequently. I have a backpack for all the things you need when you travel. Not sure how much it weights fully loaded. Here is my point: Dell wanted to make the thinnest laptop in this category. It shaved off a couple of millimeters to achieve this spec. In the process it had to have a terrible keyboard and smaller battery. But practically speaking, if you did a blind A/B test with my backpack loaded with the Dell + adapter vs. HP + adapter, I doubt that there would be a noticeable difference. WHen you actually use either device, the difference is huge: worse typing experience and worst battery life. Yes, I know - blame the 4K for much of that.
    What I worry about the HP is similar: They shaved down the formerly thick bezels and have created a stumpy-size laptop. Will it have enough room to rest my palms? It has a much smaller trackpad. HP would have been wise to increase the vertical size of the display the way Dell did and give a little extra room for palm rest, trackpad size, and a little bigger battery. But that would increase the size and weight which the marketing department wouldn’t like. Again, I suggest using the loaded backpack test as a reference point - a couple of extra millimeters, inches, and ounces to enhance usability is a trade off that will have no practical impact on true mobility.
    I’m hoping the HP will make me forget about the expensive mistake I made. I’m also hoping that in a couple of years one or both of these companies will prioritize laptop user experience over specs and will aspire to “greatest laptop”, not “thinnest” or “smallest”.

      For many 4K is overkill on a 13-inch laptop and a battery killjoy. OLED is not really good for office stuff as the white backgrounds run the battery down much quicker. I do not get OLED on a work device that is not 45-watt. Paying extra for no benefit other than blacker blacks does not do it for me. It is not compulsory so I suppose my point is irreverent, just saying.

    • @MrDrunkenMoose
      @MrDrunkenMoose 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they could ditch the fucking 4k 16:9 for a 3000:2000 display it would be so much better. first of 16:9 actually isnt that good of a ratio for small devices if you want to get stuff done other than watching videos. And most of the time you just get FHD or 4K. FHD looks dated even on a 13", you can clearly see pixels, especially looking at text. But 4K feels kind of over the top. I mean I like the resolution, but the impact on battery life in combination with intels dogshit UHD graphics often fail to impress. Responsetimes and framerate are often just sluggish. A 3:2 Screen would make so much more sense. More practical Screenspace, fewer Pixels for less battery drain and gpu demand and still a sharp image. But i guess a 3:2 screen is way more expensive to buy for them so thats that.
      p.s. i have a Spectre x360 from 2017 with a 4k screen so i know what im talking about.

      C A I was there when ThrottleStop was being written with the now-ancient XPS 16. Dell intentionally pushes their CPUs to overheating / power limits for benchmarks and we knew it. If they had set the limits slightly lower with better cooling, they would've had much better sustained performance.

    Nice comparison. One thing which has been grinding me in general (not just here) is the focus on a 'powerful device' being synonymous with video editing or gaming. For those of us who need a good, fast CPU and lots of memory for data crunching/analysis where no GPU acceleration is possible, the graphical capabilities are somewhat irrelevant. It would be nice to see how these kind of devices perform in these kinds of tasks too.

I have an older generation of the Spectre (8th Gen Kaby Lake-R) and my brother has the c930 (Last gen) and I can tell you just build quality alone, the Lenovo is noticably sturdier (the HP feels a bit more hollow) but the typing is very good on both. c930 has better speakers but the Spectre has the better display. Granted these are from the previous generation so if you buy a newer model I don't think you can go wrong with either Spectre or Yoga c930, most of it comes down to aesthetic preference with the Lenovo looking more of a simpler and cleaner laptop.

    Can you next time also compare screen reflection? It's something a lot of reviewers leave out. :/

    Hey, great video as always, I just ordered the xps though, because hp hasn't released the new Spectre model in my country yet, aaand because the xps was 300 bucks less because of a deal.
    Hope you have a good day!

    Thanks for comparing the two laptops. It's probably one of the most detailed comparisons so between the two. I don't know if the Lenovo C940 is another direct competitor or is superior to these two since it's a Project Athena laptop. It would be nice to see a detailed review on it.

    I have hp spectre x360 2018 model .. i did a lot of research on what is the best choice laptop for me. I use it most for taking notes, coding, and writing reports (the keyboard is awesome). I like this kind of laptops because they're light, very portable and you can charge them via USB C. Also, using usb hub is awesome to connect monitor, keyboard and mouse when you return home. I recommend this kind of laptops for any uni student.

    Nice video 👌 but I feel like, for some reason, the HP Spectre X360s build quality is lacking. I've looked at the Spectre in person and it feels creaky and a bit cheap even though it looks amazing. Anyways, if you could do a video on the 2019 Lenovo C940 14" it would be a good competitor! I know your a busy guy and probably won't see this comment but it would really mean a lot if you could 😅😁😄. Thanks man!!!
