- We’ve got multiple trains in the Metro Tunnel, and we’re putting them through their paces.
Our train systems expert Steven Padget walks us through this crucial testing phase as we head one step closer to passenger services.

Ok this is starting to feel real!
Hope the tunnel can be completed in less than two years, what a magnificent construction!
Amazing work and long hours to the team. Well done. The community will love it once it's complete
This is massive!!
Hurry up and finish already! ❤
great work! really good to see
Can’t wait for the go live day
Absolutely cannot wait!!!!
It’s also possible that at the current rate the Metro Tunnel can begin commuter operations in June to August 2024 however it’s possible that initially only City Square and State Library stations will be open at that time while the other three stations might not be opened until the following year or 2026! :)
Arden is practically complete now with the osd left to build, i imagaine the cbd stations take the longest since theyre the harder to work with due to their depth and lack of space
Can the signalling system let a second train begin to enter a train platform while the rear of the previous train hasn't fully cleared the platform? Or does a follow train have to wait until the previous train has completely left the whole platform like some other systems?
there probably is the possibility because the trains are automated in the tunnel i believe but it would leave little room for error
It would depend on the speeds on the trains. As mentioned in the video the ‘bubble’ size would depend on speeds & locations. It’s entirely possible with both trains going at low speed.
Why didn't they make it like in Sydney? 100km/h top speed and driverless?
100 is too fast for the bends in the tunnel, it's automated while inside the tunnel so it can perfectly align with the platform screen doors
shut up
Cause they're connecting it to the Sunbury and Pakenham lines
Why isn’t it fully driverless like Sydney metro
