Hi Colleen, I've been meaning to get into freelancing for something like five or six years now but I've never known where to start or what I would write about. Your videos about setting up a site, writing a portfolio on spec and cold pitching were helpful but I still can't figure out my niche. I wrack my brain but it feels like I don't really know enough about anything in particular, you know? Like I possess a Snapple cap's worth of knowledge about many things, but nothing that anyone would actually pay for. I've gone over a list of topics I know about and enjoy, which has helped me narrow it down a bit but I'm still not sure which field would actually make money. I'm a musician and I love to nerd out over new instruments, amplifiers, and effects. There are plenty of small to medium sized companies to pitch to and guitar sales surged during the pandemic. Successful freelancers always say you should pick a super-specific niche. Should I go with something like guitar/bass gear in general, or hyper focused like, say, bass effect pedals? Do you think this could even be a niche worth pursuing? Thanks!
Hey, I don't think you need to choose a super-specific niche. Your general niche sounds good enough. That being said I do believe that you can see success in this niche if you consistently pitch to the said companies. The niche might not have high demand but this also means it has less competition so you get a chance to stand out more. Keep polishing your portfolio and keep pitching. You should be good to go.
What about combined niches / having more than one: I could see how someone could be an expert in parenting and education because they can be related. And since many families have pets that could be a 3rd niche? - Thoughts? Or am I just looking for a loophole?

Also, would these be a legal/liability type contract for clients are they more for summarizing the specific deliverables for the client, if that makes sense? Just at the beginning of my freelance journey and don't want to miss anything I might need to take care of business-wise. Thanks for the great content!
Many copywriters have different advice when it comes to copywriting niches. Some say don't choose a niche because you are limiting yourself to opportunities. Some say choose a niche and specialize in it. In my opinion, just choose whatever works for you. These influencers are just guides.
You're not limiting yourself to opportunities. You're specializing so you can get BETTER opportunities. And, yeah, this is the Freelance Writer's Guide. Guide is in the name.
Mam could u tell how to start & get freelancing clients as a design construction engineer bcoz there are not much projects in my field which are given to freshers without 2yrs of experience in execution of design so how can i get through this problem & thrive in the uncertain phase ?

Parenting and education can go together, but not pets! You are looking for a loophole with that one :)
