This was gold. Dare I say this was better than watching a Shark Tank episode. It was not only entertaining but also full of valuable info. It's easy to see that this lady's heart is in the right place. Her main goal is not to become a millionaire but rather to help Black entrepreneurs who are just starting out. It's just a sad reality of capitalism that the numbers are so important to stay afloat. Even at the end, she says "I'm sorry if I messed up to the detriment of our vendors" so she's more worried about others than herself. She embodies what Christianity is actually meant to be.

Numbers matter in Communism too. China is the only major country that lets failed banks go under and doesnt bail them out. Some people just dont have what it takes to run a business. Her interpersonal skills would be better suited for customer service.

This Hot Seat is going to resonate with and help a lot of entrepreneurs going through a similar season. Topics that stood out to me the most were 1) identifying a business model that you can closely model after / success leaves clues 2) Lead with data driven decisions, and 3) dive deep in those numbers. This woman can do hard things!! I'm wishing The Sistahs in Business the very best and I will continue to support this brand!!

    • @KrissD41

Honestly, I don't think this woman's being honest. Everything I've heard her say counteracted everything they suggested. She said she didn't know she's guessing at everything. She keeps looking to the left when she starts to answer. I think that indicates to me that she's lying, and she's trying to hide that she's lying because she's not very good with the money. Now I'm not saying I'm the greatest with money, but I'm not owning a business and trying to pay genders and employees and rent and in trying to do expose sounds to me, like she's very successful in her sales, but I honestly think she's spending some of that. Money on her own personal stuff, they just did a flash mob. Sale helped her generate $15000. She should have been able to pay her employees plus the ramp plus the vendors, and she probably still should've had some money left over she spouts out $900000. I mean, how do you make that mistake? I couldn't understand about being nervous, but she also knew she was coming to this hot seat. Why wouldn't she have come with documentation showing for sales and expenses? And all of this stuff? Maybe even perhaps bring her accountant with her. I think she dodged a lot of questions and tried to make excuses. That's my opinion and I'm not trying to dog on the lady. I was praising the Lord for her. Good for for what these people were doing for her, I literally almost had tears in my eyes watching that. But this nah, um I think she's right. She is the problem she admitted it multiple times now, whether her accountant is a good accountant or not or her employees are good or not. I don't know, but something aint driving with her. I pay attention to what people saying how they say it. I watch their body language and their facial expressions. This is a woman that's making a lot of excuses and I think it's because she's trying to say something that she thinks these guys are gonna buy hook line and sinker, and when they come out with a counter response, just watch Her. Face You can see, she just sort of sinks into herself, and then she tries to come out with another excuse, and they stop her before she has a chance to get it all out. I think she's lying. That's my opinion. I could be wrong. I don't know the full situation and I don't know how things are working out after the fact. I don't know how long ago this was aired. But yeah, some definitely stinks and she keeps blaming herself so that tells me she is the full on problem here

I want to know if the $25,000 a month they were talking about was sales or profit. If it sales then she only gets 40% of that or $10,000 a month which doesn’t cover expenses without the help of her shelving fees.

The missing link is a good bookkeeper. A bookkeeper will track and record your business transactions (for assets, liabilities, and equity), reconcile your bank and credit card statements, and generate your financial statements (profit and loss, statement of owner's equity, statement of cash flow, and balance sheet). Then your accountant will use your business financials to prepare your taxes-- in my opinion. Best of everything to you!

She is making the assumption that people can only steal cash. Credit card transactions can be diverted. A friend hired a church member that was referred to her. This employee had set up a square personal account with a business name very similar and was processing sales. $250,000 worth before she was caught! She got caught because on her day off a customer called about her dress for which there was no record. The employee was making the sale on her personal square and somehow deleting transactions in the business system. She was prosecuted due to the amount. Cash is not the only way people steal. Know your numbers and have cross checks.

And David forgot that she is selling on consignment, so even if she had sales of $25,000 for the month, 60% of that ($15k) goes to the vendors so she only gets to keep $10,000. That goes to payroll, rent, and other useless expenses. She is spending too much and she doesn't want to come to work. Shut it down.

There's no way on earth that you've lost almost $250k a year but have not paid rent, payroll, vendors, and taxes. She seamed to be honest in the first part of the interview but the lies started coming when the real questions came & them challenging her responses.

Why not move the expo online and have the vendors speak to promote the products? It’ll save on all the costs of an in person event, drive traffic and she can still get sponsorships. It’s should be a non negotiable and they can talk about topics to promote. Every month smaller events to drive traffic and sales and this online expo maybe twice a year. The online expo should consist of the vendors who are selling great and it’s a great selling point bc by participating their brands would get exposure.

She’s using other people to stock her shelves and keep her business afloat. 15k every 90 days regardless to what sales occur. She has her own products on the shelves too. Anything that’s hers that sells she pockets 100% outside of taxes. So, ultimately covering up what she’s really taking is the issue because she’s told everyone she’s selflessly sacrificing for the culture but that’s not true when you listen to the numbers.

That 60/40 split gotta flip. That's what ppl pay to consignment shop on Riverdale Rd. She got they products in Atlantic station. She should give them 40 and keep 60. Cuz it sounds like she may be paying taxes on 100 of the revenue even though she only gets 40. Plus her lease is super expensive

No brand is going to give her 6O%. That’s crazy. Brand have to pay to produce their product then give them to her for ninety days with no payment and hope she sells AND they are paying her a shelving fee also . Thats insane
I sell wholesale to stores globally
I produce the order. My wholesale price. Is 2x markup from my cost of goods sold for the store to purchase and they do 2.5x markup for their retail price. Standard. They pay when the order ships or a long term wholesale client might get 30-60 day payment terms
Most brands will never do consignment. That models holds your stock with no guarantee of sales/pay and the brand has to pay to produce the product and pay her a shelving fee. That is hard for any brand let alone an emerging brand
The only way a brand can do that is if the store is extremely busy and has a history of great sales
I have a clothing brand and a separate store under a separate brand so I’m on both ends. I feel her struggle but the model is difficult
If she stocks brands that have a large following they will come there to shop that brand but if a brand has a large following they won’t do consignment.
      Retail is hard

Great topic. "Exclusivity" that is what the shop should be. That could help with promoting the brand and having a reason to decrease amount of brands in the store. You guys gave some great solutions, however I do think she could keep the idea of helping others but that too should be exclusive and use it has a "New and upcoming" type of product but there should be a criteria for promoting the brand. What if she did the expo in the store-rearrange it - charge a fee, it could be intimate and over a weekend. on the e-commerce tip, that could be where you use those who are vendors in the store to promote there exclusive products. I also agree with the business mentorship where she can make a plan and be accountable. Thank you for your vulnerability. I learned a lot today from your story. Be encouraged Sistah and Keep looking up!

If anyone has heard of The Painted Tree, their business model is almost the same. Its just on a much bigger scale. They are in multiple states/cities. I have to finish watching the episode, but based on my experience with The Painted Tree here in Memphis, they took the booth rent and fees out of the monthly sales for each vendor. If there were "profit" left over after the rent and fees, they cut you a check on the 1st of the month. If there werent enough sales made or any at all, that vendor was responsible for the rent& fees out of pocket. If you were unable to pay over an extended amount of time, they cancelled your contract. Also, the booths were different prices depending on the size. And if I recall correctly, if you wanted to store extra items in the storage area so that it would be easy to replenish your product, I believe there was a small fee. In my opinion she is carrying too much responsibility with the vendors. Maybe they should be paying every month verses every 3 months. Just so she can cover overhead expenses. Ultimately its the vendors job to market their brand and draw in the customers as well. These type of shops help small businesses that cant intitally carry the overhead cost of a brick and mortar. But they must function as a business. And yes The Painted Tree gets a percentage of the sales from each vendor. I feel like she can still make it work with that business model, she just need the right guidance.

U don’t think brands take a risk paying to produce their proctor then paying a stocking fee and letting her have the product for ninety days with no guarantee of sales. You have no idea the huge cost brands incur just to produce a product. Most brands who are popular will never ever do consignment they traditional wholesale to stores. They order volume the brands ship then the store pays. Consignment is a way to stock a store without spending any money purchasing goods it might work well for the store but horrible for the brand which is why most brands won’t give up products to consignment so her access to popular brands will be very very limited
That’s is a huge part of the problem with her model
I run a clothing brand and a separate brick and mortar store
I pick product based on what’s popular not based on the limited brands willing to do consignment so the access to top tier products is greater and sell faster. But I have to buy them from the brands and pay for them

While other cultures use mastermind groups to share ideas and solve problems, many entrepreneurs hesitate to seek help out of fear of judgment 🤯. This mindset can lead to huge financial losses, like the $240,000 this business owner is losing each year 💸. Instead of worrying about what others think, we need to focus on working together to ensure businesses are profitable and sustainable 💪
