The thing that annoys me about raising Palpatine isn’t that his return didn’t make sense and happened without reason, it’s that it DOES make sense, and they COULD HAVE set up a reason, but they clearly didn’t. It feels like a creative decision made right after they got back the box office numbers on Last Jedi. I can think of at least two or three threads they could have used to build up and justify this twist, but they didn’t even try. They had no idea what they were doing, and it was painfully obvious.
My Favorites Movies Sequels are : -Spider-Man 2 (2004) -The Dark Knight (2008) -Batman Returns (1992) -Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back (1980) -Terminator 2 Judgment Day (1991) -Aliens (1986) -Kill Bill Volume 2 (2004) -The Lord of The Rings The Two Towers (2002) -The Godfather Part 2 (1974)
Technically, Kill Bill 2 is not even a sequel, as it is an unplannend planned movie. The movie became too long and has been released in two part out of the cut. At least a category on its own, missing in this video, but not really a sequel in at least my opinion.
I love kill bill 2 more than kill bill. It is just so emotional. The love and hate are just two sides of a coin and the icing on the cake is the ending credit😢
All that is produced by our propaganda creators are diktated by BlackRock, State Street, Vanguard, Fidelity, et. al. You honestly think anything we see, hear or read is organically created by fellow plebs to lead us plebs by the nose? Like our money that is also fiat, @fiat, worthless paper, so is our propaganda if you measure _value by entertaining us_ sheep instead of misleading or predictive programming us to accept our future losses or eventual culling with a smile. "You will own nothing and be happy!" 'Us oligarchs, of course with still own all our assets and money... and of course yours too pleb...' just you will own nothing! Malthus after all was *right!*
My favorite sequel is Aliens. My favorite guilty pleasure sequel is King Kong Lives (1986), a sequel to the one where he falls off a building and dies.
It's quite clear at this point that Todd Phillips intentionally made Joker 2 in response to all of the sad incels who adopted the first film as a manifesto and excuse for their own bad behaviour. Joker was meant to be an empathetic take on the life experiences that could result in a sad, rejected person becoming an insane, violent murderer, lampshading the grandiose adoration they expect to receive when they murder all of the people who they feel have wronged them, and, by extension, every other downtrodden loser. The problem is that he did it too well, and in the process of trying to understand those people, he made them feel validated in their hatred and violence towards others. Joker 2 deconstructs that AGAIN, and reiterates, yes it was bad that bad things happened to you, but no, the Joker is not a hero, and you are not the Joker. The Joker is a mask worn by a sad sack in order to make himself feel powerful in spite of his own powerlessness. He is not an icon or a role model. He is a murderer in an asylum and you should NOT aspire to be like him. Effectively, Joker 2 is Todd Phillips saying "Listen up, chucklefucks. Since you were too dumb to get it the first time when I was being nice, here's the whole presentation again, but this time it has pretty colours and you're wearing a fucking dunce cap."
Reading through these comments and there’s a film I haven’t seen acknowledged yet, so I’ll go ahead and mention it- Sanjuro is an excellent sequel. One of my absolute favourites.
This couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m currently writing the second installment of my book series, but I’ve been stuck trying to decide which direction to take it in. I feel like it’s always more difficult to write a story when there’s already an established world and expectations that come with that
Just go out an make it! You will learn as you go! That’s the best way to learn! First thing make sure audio is good that’s the most important. Then just watch movies and study them

The Hustler and The Color of Money was a good sequel for me. Different era, different point in time for Eddie's life, new blood (Tom Cruise), and an uplifting ending. A rare example, but I loved it.
I would have put "Airplane 2: The Sequel" (1982) and "Gease 2" (1982) in this video. These two movies were indeed sequels to big box office hit films "Airplane!" (1980) and "Grease" (1978) and they were written and directed by the same writer/director Ken Finkleman; but they didn't do well at the box office. Plus, in the case of "Airplane 2: The Sequel" it was considered a retelling of the original, but it took place in outer space. And the writers/directors Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams were asked to write the sequal, but they turned it down and to this day, they have not seen "Airplane 2: The Sequel".
My favorites movies sequels of all time: 1. The Two Towers 2. The Godfather Part 2 3. The Dark Knight 4. Spider-man 2 5. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows 6. Terminator 2 7. The Empire Strikes Back 8. Skyfall How about yours?
1.Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 1991 2.Godfather Part II - 1974 3.Star Wars V: Empire Strikes Back - 1980 4.The Dark Knight - 2008 5.Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior - 1981 6.Aliens - 1986 7.Spider-Man 2 - 2004 8.Rocky II - 1979 9.Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - 1989 10.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 1967 11.Evil Dead II - 1987 12.Bride of Frankenstein - 1935 13.Addams Family Values - 1993 14.Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan - 1982 15.Toy Story 3 - 2010 16.Blade Runner 2049 - 2017 17.TRON: Legacy - 2010 18.Paddington 2 - 2017 19.X2: X-Men United - 2003 20.Dawn of the Dead - 1978
The Empire Strikes Back, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are definitely my favourite sequels (it's just an honest coincidence that both have Harrison Ford. Or that most of my all-time favourite films include him. If you like "whodunnits", watch Presumed Innocent. Yes, he's in it 😂. I think he just picks good scripts as a rule. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! 🤣). {EDIT: how about lesser-known/near forgotten films of big name actors? Why do they fade into the background despite being top quality? Is it because there's no sequel?} This doesn't mean that I don't like Return of the Jedi, etc., just that of the sequels in those collections (I do hate to use the word "franchise". Makes it sound like a McDonald's...), these are my favourites. I'm not much of a film watcher these days, I prefer to read the book it's based on. Obviously not all films are based on books, but the majority of films that come out that appeal to me have some level of literary background. I'm physically disabled and going to the cinema is, quite literally, a pain in the bum! And back, and so on. So going to the cinema is a major trek for me. One of the last films I saw in a cinema, and which put me off prequels for life, was The Phantom Menace. That's the last Star Wars film I saw (which isn't one of _the_ three that occasionally appear on TV). My friend and I had been looking forward to it since we heard anything about it, and we were so excited to go see it. Unfortunately it was dreadful and such a disappointment. I genuinely only remember the race from it, and I have always had a near photographic memory for films and pictures (photos to paintings). After that, my final ever trip to the cinema was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was supposed to be a birthday treat for me from Hubs and the kids. I had to hide the fact that I hated it! See the original BBC series on VHS, or better still, if possible, listen to the "original original" radio series and use your imagination to "see" it. The best pictures you'll ever see are on radio after all. If you're wondering why I'm a fan of this channel, it's because I love to write, and despite having a degree as an English literature and language major (including creative writing), I find that I'm learning more about writing here than from a course aimed directly at wannabe writers. It's a fantastic channel and I thoroughly appreciate all the work that goes into it. So thank you! 😊
I personally believe that Terminator 2 is the greatest sequel ever made. Because it is the greatest action film ever made. It is simply impossible to create a better sequel than T2.
One of the best sequel, which is also a prequel should be infernal affairs II, taking place a decade before Infernal Affairs, spanning six years, from 1991 to 1997, making it an epic story of the fall of a mob family.
The box office return of a sequel usually says less about the quality of the sequel than it does how beloved the original film was. But speaking of changes, why the change of voiceover?
You have to maintain the features and rules of your characters and world. If you break/simplify/bend/dumb down your established settings, I cannot take you seriously. For ex, when I see a 15 year old girl beating up a Predator, or 15 year old girl blasting a horde of aliens, I despise your work. Because in the first movies I had watched a single Predator take out a group of soldiers, and just one alien (that is described as the perfect organism) nearly outsmart a whole crew. So, do not disrespect your audience.
Better or successful? In the case of Terminator, what made it great was Arnold whose acting suited a machine, whereas the sequel (tried) to make him funny. What made Alien good was the fact that you really couldn't see the alien, it seemed incredibly fast and scary. Both sequels had compelling stories and more conventional action which made them successful, though neither were as good as the originals.
Cohesive storytelling. The MCU worked through Endgame because it built its way up to a single franchise-spanning event and resolution. The MCU fell apart after Endgame because, despite the story being over, Disney decided to squeeze every last bit of blood from the stone. Similarly, trilogies (LoTR, Matrix), or longer franchises (HP) work when they are parts of a single whole, or when each movie is a vignette or glimpse into a short period in a single character's life (Indiana Jones, James Bond) Somewhat looser is when you take a premise and apply it to multiple genres to make a series of loose sequels (e.g. Cars as an affectionate parody of the sports and spy genres) But it's obvious when you take a concluded story and then start trying to stick extra pieces on that were never meant to be there, and that's not entertaining. I'd rather have a good one-off than a zombie franchise.
Are trilogies (that are written and designed as such), or adaptations of a book series, actually considered 'sequels' in the same way something like a slasher movie sequel or Police Academy 2 are? And should they be? The two are quite distinct, I mean, if season 2 of Game of Thrones isn't a sequel to season 1 then neither are the second Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings films.
Hollywood knew when to make a sequel when the interest and story was there to recapture the awe of the audience. Nowadays it is used as a cash grab. I am no financial genius but studios loosing a few hundred million dollars on a failed movie should be landing people in unemployment permanently!!! We get mad if we loose $20 but find it in the laundry! Just saying! The one example of an actor not returning for a sequel is Robert Duval in Godfather Part 3. He stated that there was nothing more to tell in the story and the story for 3 wasn't that good. A good follow up to this lesson (in more depth) is to look at a franchise who starts off strong but finishes weakly when the third or fourth film is released. At what point does a franchise say, no more? And why when a good movie comes out, doesn't get the accolades it deserves and become a one hit wonder (ie A-Team and Dredd). Once again, thank you STUDIOBINDER for a great lesson!!! See you in the sequel...or prequel....who knows anymore! LOL
Interestingly, both Lucas and Abrams returning to Star Wars resulted in the worst movie in the trilogy closing the trilogy. Not sure either was a particularly good example of good sequel-making. Return of the Jedi has a great first act and is uneven in the rest of the movie (the Luke plot works, but everything on Endor seems like Lucas trying too hard to appeal to kids. That said, it is still a fitting end to the trilogy, just not as good as the two that preceded it. In contrast, Rise of Skywalker isn’t merely the worst Star Wars movie- it is the worst movie I ever chose to see in a theater. It is a continuing reminder that JJ can’t end anything well, and is the biggest wet fart of an ending I can think of in any medium (in other words, worse than s8 of Game of Thrones).
@ Fair. My understanding was Lucas had final approval of the theatrical release, and unlike with Empire, was very heavy-handed about it, but you’re right he was not the official director. So in that case, they are actually talking about Phantom Menace, which kinda makes my point even better.
Wait a minute… is this Video Ai generated? If you listen to the script it sounds like the generic non confrontational stuff Chat GPT would say. Im shocked I watched this whole slop video and not even notice
Sorry to disappoint, but this is 100% organic material. We aren't trying to be controversial here, we're taking a more-or-less neutral stance to get the conversation started and to give people things to consider when they make a sequel or when they watch (and judge) a sequel.
Abrahms didnt come back to capture anything but a gigantic paycheck and to clean up the mess Rian Johnson made, and to say otherwise is incredibly dishonest on your part. If you cant even get that detail correct why on earth should I waste my time engaging with your content? Unsubbed.
The only remake I've seen where it's worse because they made the main character black is the Robocop one. They just tend to be awful films that are only actually being re-made because of the death of creativity, they're not bad because of racism.
It was the one part of the novels that the studio kept.🤦
No explanation.😞

Malthus after all was *right!*
Thanks for that but one of the ideas we wanted to get across in this video is that making a sequel will always be an imperfect science.
@@StudioBinder True, but Hollywood is taking imperfect to the next level these days.
My favorite sequel is Aliens. My favorite guilty pleasure sequel is King Kong Lives (1986), a sequel to the one where he falls off a building and dies.
What makes a good sequel? Not having Todd Philips attached is a start 😂
At this point, Joker 2 is receiving undeserved criticism.
Hangover 2 ?
Joker folie a deux is literally 20 times better than the first one. Film of the year for me and this is coming from someone who doesnt like musicals
The best sequels is The Dark Night it's toppled Terminator Judgement Day.
Reading through these comments and there’s a film I haven’t seen acknowledged yet, so I’ll go ahead and mention it-
Sanjuro is an excellent sequel. One of my absolute favourites.
My favorite sequel is Scorcher 6: Global Meltdown.
Let's face it, the kids aren't exactly dressing up as The Scorcher for Purim anymore.
This couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m currently writing the second installment of my book series, but I’ve been stuck trying to decide which direction to take it in. That would actually be a great video to see
That's a great topic but it would have to be a mini-series! We'll look into it.
I think Dune Part Two it's not a sequel, but instead, as the title says, the second half of the story
Very Inspiring and Useful to understand. Thank you StudioBinder for explaining what makes A Good Sequel in Movies. Keep Going.💯💯
Thanks!
Allright, the tropic thunder ending was clever.
Thanks for noticing!
Love you StudioBinder for another video.

What sequel do you think is better than the original? I saw Smile 2 recently and it kicked Smile 1’s ass!!!
Godfather part II, Empire Strikes Back and Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Terminator 2 is on that list.
*My favourite Sequels* 🤘🏻

*The dark knight* 🦇
*Dune Part 2* 🐹
*Terminator 2* 😎
*Spiderman 2* 🕸️
*Kill Bill volume 2* 🔪
A very appropriate video for the Cinema landscape we are in now.
Definitely. It's risky to make original content in Hollywood, perhaps more now than ever.
The Empire Strikes Back, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are definitely my favourite sequels (it's just an honest coincidence that both have Harrison Ford. The secret: hire Harrison Ford!

Send this to Ridley Scott
love your videos
Thanks!
I hope they don't make Scarface 1983 with Al Pacino a sequel because Tony Montana died at the end and he got shot up so many times.
It'd have to be a remake which I'm sure will happen one day. Even the 1983 film is a remake!
Video on Backstory, character development plz
Those are good topics! Thanks for the suggestion.
The box office return of a sequel usually says less about the quality of the sequel than it does how beloved the original film was.
But speaking of changes, why the change of voiceover?
No Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 mention? That's the best genre changing sequel to ever exist 😩
Please do an entire video on beetlejuice beetlejuice

@studiobinder What happened to the usual VO artist?
He's holding out for more money.
this video could have been 10seconds long: "Don't do it. Alright, see you next time on StudioBinder!"
Interesting take! Many people would agree with you on Alien/Aliens but I think you're in the minority on T1/T2.
Cohesive storytelling.
The MCU worked through Endgame because it built its way up to a single franchise-spanning event and resolution.
The MCU fell apart after Endgame because, despite the story being over, Disney decided to squeeze every last bit of blood from the stone.
Similarly, trilogies (LoTR, Matrix), or longer franchises (HP) work when they are parts of a single whole, or when each movie is a vignette or glimpse into a short period in a single character's life (Indiana Jones, James Bond)
Somewhat looser is when you take a premise and apply it to multiple genres to make a series of loose sequels (e.g. Cars as an affectionate parody of the sports and spy genres)
But it's obvious when you take a concluded story and then start trying to stick extra pieces on that were never meant to be there, and that's not entertaining. I'd rather have a good one-off than a zombie franchise.
Ok this isn’t related to this specific video, but what happened to part 1 of how to write an interrogation scene?
Superb 🎉
Thanks!
cc: Disney.
No way is Terminator 2 better than The Terminator…
LOL
Thanks for watching!
Force awakens sucseed? Your milage may vary, but everyone unanimously agreed they all been nothing but poor carbon copies! Bad examples.
It revitalized the brand and made people excited for more Star Wars movies
@anthonyvillanueva5226 . Rehashed,empty, convolluted, pathetic. Not really!
Thanks for watching!
Day forever of asking you to do a video about Atlanta
We just might but what specifically should we cover? The writing, directing, etc.?
Why are you showing so many HATED sequels like the star wars ones(which are reboots in all but name) in a video about good sequels?
We can learn from mistakes just as much from successes.
Lucas didn't direct Return of the Jedi; Richard Marquand did.
@ Fair. My understanding was Lucas had final approval of the theatrical release, and unlike with Empire, was very heavy-handed about it, but you’re right he was not the official director.
So in that case, they are actually talking about Phantom Menace, which kinda makes my point even better.
This sounds like an AI voiceover.
🔥🔥
❤
I’m still waiting for the greatest sequel of all time Kung Pow 2
Re-Enter the Fist?
2012 seems like a lifetime ago for hollywood.. theyve 'changed'
Agreed!
You mean successful
Successful tends to imply a monetary achievement but "great" covers all the criteria we're looking at.
FNAF as exemple?
Never?
Never say never :)
2nd
So close!
Look I see Paul Atreides I click
Same!
Shrek 2 was perfect🤌🏼
Can't argue with that!
dune part 2 is not a sequel
How come?
I really wish there was a second like/dislike button specifically for TH-cam, separate from the content.
Would you hit "like" or "dislike" in that scenario?
Unsubbed.
1st 👀✨
nice
Sometimes, the best sequel is the one never made, but which exists in the audience's vision.
To me to make a great sequel is to be faithful to the original while bringing something fresh and new to the table without being a retread.
That's the idea but executing it can be tough!
this narrators voice is the unsuccessful sequel to the old guys voice
Thanks for the feedback.
No woke agenda😂😂😂😂😂
Indeed. Have women stay in the kitchen and only speak with permission like god intended.
The only remake I've seen where it's worse because they made the main character black is the Robocop one.
They just tend to be awful films that are only actually being re-made because of the death of creativity, they're not bad because of racism.
