Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent Limited a GOOD or GREAT 3-row SUV?

  • This Subaru Ascent is the LARGEST Subaru ever made. Under the hood is a 2.4L turbocharged flat-4 producing 270 HP & mated to a CVT. It's exterior dimensions are very balance and has a rugged look. On the inside the Ascent really shines with plenty of room and 19 cupholders. Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent the best 3-row SUV you should buy?

      Sadeq Islam highlander is a no go for me, just not enough cargo or room in 3rd row, unless they improve. Pilot look good from inside and actually has a spacious 3rd row for adults like no other, but regardless it looks like a minivan. The ascent honestly from outside looks like a hybrid between highlander and pilot, great 3rd row and lots of cargo space and usb in the 3rd row, oh and 19 cup holders is a bonus. Subie all the way.

    Great review. I watched all your 3 row videos, and after test driving them all I came to the conclusion that the Subaru was the best bet. So far I do not regret it one bit, the car keeps getting better in my opinion. There are so many selling points that there's just not enough time to cover them all. Infotainment is top notch, easy to use and very responsive. The drive is smooth with minimal blips from the CVT, so much better than my prior vehicle's 8 speed. What I've found most appealing is that when I'm going uphill it kicks down very quickly and I barely need to touch the gas to zoom up a hill. Lastly, fit and finish rivals luxury Japanese brands. Knobs don't wobble, nothing looks cheap or plasticy. One thing you missed is the step. Yes it's a step to the back seat, but it's also an excellent foothold to get to the roof rack, which was made in such a way that you can grab it like a handle. Thanks for helping me make an informed decision.

    Hi Joe, How are you? here again and enjoying the excellent videos you offer every day. Well I think that Subaru Ascent is really good vehicle. I like the design of the body lines, I like the combination of colors inside the car. About the engine, the design is different flat engine with 2.4-liter turbocharged, 4-cylinder, It is a great advantage in the fuel economy for a family SUV. The detail of all this is the cost of maintenance, it is expensive, Of course, everything depends on the care in the mechanics, it is not a common vehicle like the Honda or other good SUV vehicles. Well is my opinion. Excellent video Joe. Thank you

    Hi Joe. I just test drove a 2020 Ascent Touring. Has your ventilated seats, folding mirrors, a smart rear view mirror that shows the rear camera when you flip it up, 120v connection and a few more goodies. I loved the layout and roominess as well as the build quality. I thought my test drive was a tad noisy cause of the 4 cylinder when accelerating. It is on my list but 47k for the Touring model.

    We got her ascent limited for 37, no sunroof with captains chairs so they can go lower. Also the base mode is down around 32k and an amazing value you still get all the safety standard just not the extra luxury, and for 32ish for a nice 3 row it’s a great deal.
    Also, captains chairs were a must have for us with 2 baby seats installed right now, we couldn’t even use the third row without them. With the captains chairs we can just walk by, my parents ride back there all the time

I am currently looking at both Ascent Limited, and Explorer 4WD XLT and was hoping I can get your opinion as to which you would recommend. They both have a 4 cylinder turbo, similar EPA fuel ratings, and it's a difficult decision. Overall comfort, driving ease, and long term ownership costs would be important.

    You say that these are not like the old Subarus in terms of fit and finish? How far back are you going? I would argue that the Limited form of the Outback, Forester and Legacy have been class competitive for at least 20 years. I like how Subaru provides some luxury without being cheesy feeling. I don't need fake wood trim, excessive chrome or gimmicky electronic options. Just simple, straightforward and high quality.

    looks a bit like the pathfinder but appears to be much better in every metric one can measure. CVT sounds better on those simulated gears but I still have pause. IMO, a decent transmission like the ZF 8 speed can give you the same MPG's as a CVT and provide you with superior performance. The reason oems go with the CVT is cost. The ZF will cost more. Allot more. CVT's are cheap for the oem but a nightmare for out of warranty repairs. And more expensive to service. But on mainstream cars they are here to stay. Maybe if I drove this I would change my mind. Also, how the heck to they get 5000K lb towing on this thing? Traditionally, a CVT will get hot and burn towing that much. My neighbor just bought a loaded Kia Telluride SX for about the same amount. And it even has an air suspension. I think it has a bigger, normally aspirated V6 and a real 9 speed. Looks a lot nicer then this. If Kia can ramp up capacities they are going to own this segment. Capacity seems to be their real issue now. They can't keep them on the lots. People are paying 5K over MSRP for an SX now. My neighbor paid MSRP because he ordered it over 4 months back. Dealer almost didn't want to sell it to him but they had no choice lol.

    Obviously Subaru needed a three row midsize SUV in their lineup. Unfortunately, it is one of only two vehicles in the category that fails to offer a standard or optional V6. (The Mazda CX-9 is the other.) And it's the only one with a four banger and a CVT. With a curb weight over 4600 lbs and a weight of nearly two and a half tons when loaded with fuel, passengers, and luggage/gear I'm skeptical about its long term durability. The same engine/transmission combination is available in the Outback XT with a curb weight seven hundred pounds less ( or about half a ton less when loaded). A much more appropriate application. Unless you REALLY need 19 cupholders, there are better alternatives.

      Audi Q7 and Ford F150 has a similar turbo 4. Have you driven this vehicle? I've owned one for 9 months. It sounds less strained than my 2.5L Legacy did, and that weighed a half ton less. I considered getting a new Forester (same platform), but the Ascent performance blew it out of the water. I got 35 mpgs on a 30 mile (flat) drive the other day. Try doing that with a naturally aspirated 6. I am also able to easily pass cars at 90 mph uphill with the turbo. Also has a 60,000 powertrain warranty. I don't think Subaru is worried about the longevity of the engine.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @802asher
      @802asher 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen Hendricks Isn’t that the case with all cars? Problems more likely arise later?? I’m saying that if this engine is fundamentally problematic from a mechanical standpoint, then Subaru has bigger concerns for their reputation than for warranty repair costs. I think their engineering team probably thought that one through. I’m also saying that there is absolutely no problems with having this particular engine and tranny in the Ascent from my perspective as an owner with 6k on mine. It’s a sweet zippy high tech utilitarian vehicle. Drive one!
