  • In this video, I take a look at two proposals for the Adelaide Street Circuit from the early 1980s. Imagine if they'd went with either of these!

    I think one of the craziest Adelaide circuit stories is they took a Formula 5000 around with a camera strapped to it to sell the idea to the government. The crazy part is they didn't ask if they could, they just did it first thing one Sunday, drove the car straight on the trailer and left quick smart.

    A reversal of the 1st layout proposed could've worked into the modern era... Just, lack of runoff is always going to be an issue, in particular: Adelaide oval(13) & Red Gum park(8) on the riverside of the track and University bend(4) would be the worst parts

    • @SouthPawRacer
      @SouthPawRacer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Who knows, it could have been clockwise after all - but I based my interpretation on the map in the Speedcafe article, which appears to show an anticlockwise route.

    This series of "how tracks could have been" makes me wanna propose you really really bad the idea for a video about the proposals for making Le Sarthe a permanent circuit between the late 60s and the early 70s, which are absolutely... mindblowing. You should absolutely check them out, I can provide you some links and sources if you want.
    NOTE: thanks god that they made a referendum between the drivers and public about these and what came to reality for the 1972 24 Hours have only been the Porsche curves to avoid the fast and dangerous Maison Blanche kink section. I can't imagine a Le Mans different from what it has always been... so, choice is yours, but I think it would be a great story to tell! ;)

    Adelaide resident here.
    Proposal 1 would have been pretty good on paper, but ... those streets are quite narrow. They'd have just been following each other all the way from King William Rd to Morphett St in the middle sector. You're right, that uphill blast to Light Sq would have had a lot of crashes too. It'd be a lot of watching them though.

    Another great video about the history of motorsport in Adelaide. Well done. Your pronunciation of "Pulteney Street" is correct, (I'm from Adelaide). It's also interesting to note that part of the first design for the street circuit has actually been used. Not for motorsport but rather cycling. The section which goes around the River Torrens was used annually for the Tour Down Under. I already knew that this was part of the original design for the F1 circuit and always thought how picturesque it would have been. However, it would have been a nightmare to setup and host

    • @ziran80

      A lot of businesses would have complained bitterly if either of these proposals went ahead, about being completely cutoff from the rest of the city. The old and current layouts block almost zero businesses/buildings.

  • @SupaFry99
    @SupaFry99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think it would be very likely the final corner of layout 2 would have been just like brewery corner. That intersection was upgraded and wasn't shaped like that back in the 80's.

  • @Dat_kiwi22
    @Dat_kiwi22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The First layout in reverse would have been far better. Turn 1 (as labled) and turn 4 would need run offs created, but all the other major braking zones have whole streets to use.
    Would be a very fun track, super technical, with some walls in places to punish mistakes.

  • @Spector06111

    The first layout goes right passed the Adelaide zoo at turn 5. Probably another reason it was never approved.

  • @stereotype.6377
    @stereotype.6377 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I love the first lay-out, but it probably wouldn't be very futureproof. If they bullozed parts of the city to make permanent run-off areas that would be a big sacrifice... considering bulldozing parts of cities is an incredibly dangerous practice in social terms. Glad we got what we got, but I'd love to see Prototypes and GTs return to this track (the 1999 New Years Eve-race)

  • @ldnwholesale8552

    I doubt the inhabitants at the Zoo would have appreciated the noise. And Frome St was then part of the hospital. Plus the back of the uni would have been very disruptive. I have done a good part of that though at a GP 'display' From te Parade ground, into King William, then Pultney St into the GP track and 3 or 4 laps back into Pultney into the Frome St. Then back behind the uni to the Parade ground. All this in Fri lunchtime traffic. Without the promised closed roads and police escort. Yes it was a circus!

    As someone who has walked the streets of the Adelaide CBD many times I've never thought "Wow this fits the eye as a natural place for an F1 track..." • @DocTight

    Why not just go clockwise (edit: in the first layout, obviously)? Both steering-braking parts would become acceleration zones and thus fine. There's also almost no space for runoff anyway, so you don't lose that either.

    When the track was being laid out a spokesperson was asked about the late inclusion of a Victoria Park section (the purpose-built section). Journalists didn't know why it was needed and the answer they got was that it would mean seating at the horse race track could be used as stands. This could have been a late announcement as Adelaidian's are very protective of the parklands, but as the whole project was adopted by everyone that seems unnecessary. It was also the first race to use the combination of wire and concrete barriers that are now common place at F1 races. It was ground breaking at the time and happened because the people in charge wouldn't let a good idea go by no matter the source. A magazine produced by the organizers would include suggestions from average people that some times did get adopted. This is the kind of thing that made Adelaide a special race and proves that Melbourne has the money to buy anything except common sense.

    • @ziran80

      That would have blocked ALL access by bus and car to the city from the eastern suburbs. The residents of the eastern suburbs complain yearly with the road closures for the current layout that does not use Rundle Rd (Jones Straight).

    Being from Adelaide, and actually being old enough to remember the Grand Prix first coming here almost 40 years ago, I have over time become familiar with the proposed Adelaide layouts before they finally settled on the one we all knew and loved.
    Unfortunately the track as it was can never be again due to the Banana Bend being moved approximately 75 metres south to accommodate the building of the O-Bahn Bus Tunnel, the entrance to which lies inside the track at what was Stag Turn (turn 9).

      BTW ... you got Pultney Street 100% correct. Well done 👏👏
      You did slightly mess Grenfell Street though, but that's OK. The second e is pretty much said as a 'u' by locals. Thus we pronounce it more as Grenfull then Grenfell.

    Looks like a solid plan for the track, and in a perfect world where the race would bring lots of money to the city council I could see some changes to the surrounding areas being made, I love the curved braking section and honestly the road looks wide enough to accomodate cars below the F1 grade :)
