I honestly believe Storm and Skye were invented so Diageo could have a value triple pack of 20cl bottles with the 10yo. Like the comparison here, I’ve wondered for years if there was any difference between these.
Agree. Just tried my first bottle of storm and gave it away. Love the ten and dist ed, the 18 and the special ed, as well as the 8 yo and 15 yo cask strength releases. Storm is totally superfluous
There are a lot of single malts which are superfluous. They may even get good reviews. But I'm mostly thinking of 40%ers with e150 and chill filtration. Good blend filler makes good blends. They should promote better blended malts instead of BS single malts and maybe I'll buy one. Hahaha-doubt it. Storm and Skye are just silly. The 10 is still not overly priced and represents the nature of the distillery character. Some have called it the quintessential peated scotch. What more does Diageo want? I have and unopened older storm and I regifted Dark Storm a few months ago, but I'll be at Heathrow tomorrow so we'll see. Thanks to Whiskytube, I will actually have an idea of what I'm look at
Hey Geoff, another solid review! Tried the Storm back in March as part of an entry level Island scotch tasting I was having with some friends. The other bottles included Tobermory 12, Highland Park 12, Arran 10, and Scapa Orcadian. I ranked the Storm just above the Scapa which was my least favourite scotch of the night. It wasn't bad, just disappointing since I really enjoy Talisker 10 and was hoping it would be comparable considering it costs $101 here whereas the 10 is $84. Like you said, the Talisker 10 just does everything better than the Storm, and here it does it for considerably less.
Most excellent discussion of new vs old Formulations of Tali . Sadly, in Ontario CA prices are mad, 100$CAD for Storm / 120$ for Tali-10 / 125$ for Distillers Ed. / 110$ Port Ruighe (yeah, cheaper than 10 !) . . . Compared to pre-2015, all post-2015 releases are very FLORAL on the nose with short finishes. I am stepping into my fixed income years now, so I would just buy 2 Te Bheag (40$) for every 1 bott of Talisker/10/storm, vatt them all together and split, voila =3 bottles at 60$ for the tumbler, saving my 18 and 21 for the copita . Lovely video.
Great honest review! I had the "older labeled" Storm little over a year ago, and I didn't like it. I actually liked Skye more. Storm for me tasted "hollow". Some salt, some smoke, some sweetness, but nothing in between. 10yo is much better. However I want to try Dark Storm when I find it, to see how it compares to the others in the core range.
I completely agree. Thank you for the walk through and your thoughts. I can actually enjoy both, but with the price difference not there, I will always choose the 10 if I am in the mood for Talisker
I like to try new things, but Storm is more expensive than 10Y in my local store which surprised me. Sticking with the 10Y because it's really good and I will experiment with other brands. My latest was Glenfiddich in IPA cask, kind of a gamble but perfect for me. Thanks for your take. I had the same uninformed assumption but good to hear it from someone who actually tasted it. Saved me some bucks 🙂
Your right that age isn't everything, some of the best whiskey i have had is non aged white, or better known as moonshine, some of them are packed with flavor.
I just got a bottle of this for my birthday this week from a couple of work colleagues. A bit smokey for me to enjoy neat. But on-the-rocks hits the spot nicely
In my US market, there is approx $25 difference beween the 10 and the Storm. Talisker 10 is typically around $68-70, and Storm is usually around $45. So maybe with a differential like that it makes sense.
That makes much more sense. Meanwhile I have comments from people in other markets saying where they live the Storm is much pricier than the 10. Insane!
@@Gwhisky Good review. I haven't tried Storm yet, such a fan of the 10 I'd rather pay the extra dough. I didn't think much of the NAS Game of Thrones Talisker, the typically elegant campfire smoke was sort of ashy, off-putting.

I've even heard from people in the comments that the Storm is a good chunk more expensive than the 10 in some places. Whisky pricing is total madness. But yes, I'm lucky. Cheers!
I compared the 18 and one of the Distillers Edition at a bar. They are very similar, I like the Distillers edition more. So I would probably buy a bottle of it.
My review of your whisky review = 97. Great serious comparison but interspersed with terrific humour. Why isn’t anybody commenting on “explore everything, which is a great motto for trying whisky but a terrible one for a weekend in Thailand”? LMAO!! PS Can’t go wrong with the ten….at least what my Thai pickup said when she (?) saw me naked.
In the UK at least, the Talisker Storm and Skye are both heavily discounted almost all the time - one or the other is usually around £28 rather than the £48 supposed RRP. Their purpose is to provide diageo with a NAS (no age statement) option that they can discount.
Look, this is a very typical marketing strategy in perfumery. Fashion brands like Versace, Givenchy, Hugo Boss, etc launch flankers all the time. Those flankers are basically the same fragrance with an additional word on its name (like One Million - One Million Elixir) and an additional note in its formula. Basically, they want to sell another product that lives off the fame of the preceding product that it basically mimics with a slight change to make it "worth trying"
I haven't tried any sort of Talisker since the new labels were introduced, so... When I bought a bottle of Storm it was about £10 less than the 10 (now the difference is only about £5, I think, but Storm is still cheaper here). I have always found the 10 too peppery for me; the Storm (then) was less peppery and more smoky, so I went for that (more like Laphroaig?).
Storm is usually the one I see discounted at the supermarket here in the UK. So the RRP is the same but generally on the shelf side by side with the 10 it’s about 15-20% cheaper.
Hi Geoff, i agree, i just tried the Storm and for me it is weaker than the 10, i got a curious note like a kind of artificial charred note, something i got before for example with the JW Double black, it is just ok, but, as you said at the same price range as the 10yo, it is just not worth it for me. Thank you for the honesty. Now you just teach Diageo what to do. They will increase the price of 10 and maintain the storm. They get better profit by selling both.
It sounds like Storm fizzled out to the hype when the new remake offering was released. I've had 10 years ago and it was some whisky...maybe time to revisit 10.
I much prefer the new label but maybe that’s just me, the old one is tacky to me. Both the old and new box designs are great to me though. Love the review, this is my go to affordable option for something kinda peaty but easily drinkable. Usually go for neat but still enjoy it on the rocks.
Hi Geoff, spot on with the review. Fully agree you have to try something at least once. At my local store the Storm is $20 (NZD) cheaper than the 10 so on a budget it would make sense to try out. Keep up the great work.
On a similar note, where I live Ardbeg Ten and 5yo tend to be very close in price, sometimes less than $5; so what's the point? Ardbeg 5 should be 43% and sell for about $35 IMO; then it would be a killer bottle ✌️
Different situation in my opinion. I consider both Ardbeg 5 and 10 to be excellent. Talisker 10 and Storm have a big gap in terms of quality, sophistication, and complexity.
Can't agree more with the reviewer. Only purpose is blending it into cocktails/hot Choc/toddies to make them more interesting. Bought it because I love the 10. I will stick with the 10 for sipping from now on (next winter).
General question: Ok so there’s Peat Smoke Sherry Maritime Earthy When I first had talisker 10 I was blown away by the salted caramel angle. I’ve already grown to love peat smoke. What other major categories should I try and which whiskeys are good for each flavour?
For entry-level pricing I think Bunna 12 would cover both the sherry and the earthy notes nicely. I like Oban 14 as a maritime malt, but it's getting overpriced. I'm a huge fan of Ardnamurchan, and they definitely have a coastal character. For peat you can't go wrong with Port Charlotte 10. Those would by my suggestions! 🥃
Ah... frack me... I bought a bottle of Storm instead of 10 based on reviews of the older version I saw some time ago, I didn't imagine they'd change the formulation. Would've bought the 10yo had I seen this... anyways, it promises to be a fine enough scotch so I'll enjoy it. Thanks for the review!
Great take on these offerings. You really should consider more of these comparison videos. How about a review of the lower shelf at the PXmart - JWR vs Label 5 or Chivas 12 vs Prime Blue?
Completely agree Geoff. I think we can go back to the original marketing label of the Storm. The old label looked pretty funky to folk in the supermarket who don't really know about whisky and the 10 seemed like a more traditional whisky. With the new boring label they look identical but the 10 is better. Therefore , "what's the point of the Storm" as you say? I think Serge once said that Skye and Storm took the pressure off the 10 because Diageo could flog that NAS stuff without lowering the quality of the 10. The 10 isn't as good as it was 20 years ago but it's still very good. Skye and Storm came out when traditional companies were doing their best to rip us off by selling NAS which was the same price as better aged stuff. None of those whiskies were as good as their age statement namesakes - Think Glenlivet as a painful example.
Very possibly true WT! I have no idea what the thought process of the marketing team was at the time, but you're right that's right around the time brands were going crazy for NAS releases. I'm not sure about the part where it was to maintain the quality of the 10, but maybe that's just the cynic in me. Good insights, thanks buddy!
Very few. By myself, I may finish one bottle every two or three months. In a group my friends and i probably finish 2 or 3 per month, between many people. Most of my bottles are split, borrowed, or traded. Still, I do have too many open bottles these days. First world problems...
The Storm is a good $15-25 cheaper in my market. But, given the choice between a NAS and an age stated bottle, I’m always going with the age statement.
Currently here in the UK it's £30 for the 10yr, £25 for Skye & £32 for the storm. At those prices it's the 10 all day long although I'm tempted by the Port Ruighe as my next Talisker, available for just under £50 🤔
@@Gwhisky I have a few auction bottles to collect later this week which includes the earlier 10 (pre cartoon label) interested to see if there's any difference between both. 🥃🤔
I haven't tried the Storm (and I'm unlikely to buy it after this review when I can just have the 10!) yet, but here in Australia there's a AUD $10 (~US$7) difference between the 10 and Storm.
@@BanjoSick you are 1st person who same opinion as mine. Especialy old bottling of Skye compare to new one of 10. Anyway i big Talisker fan and i like all T releases. I wish to all NAS's have Skye or Storm quality level. 🙋♂️
Man that's weird. People from all over the world seem to have different prices for this stuff in relation to the 10. Wild that they would charge more for this...
I agree that the Storm is a good scotch. The Dark Storm is better. In fact, I think the Dark Storm is better than the 10. In my market the 10 is way overpriced for what you get ($83). For me, the 10 should be around $50. It’s a good scotch, not a great scotch. I could get an Ardbeg Uigeadail for $9 more than the cost of the Talisker 10 here. There is absolutely no comparison between those two scotches. The Dark Storm is more difficult to find but I can get it online in a 1 liter bottle for $65. That’s a great deal.
Depends on markets, it seems. Ardbeg Uigeadail is better, but it's also well over double the price of the Talisker 10 here. I've had the Dark Storm once a long time ago. I should revisit it soon. Cheers Alan.
i see ya change your mind on the talisker 10 from your review 3 months ago i think ya gave it a 82 here you give it 88 like yo see a update review for comparison
I bought the Storm, but have not tried it yet. In fact, I have not tried any Talisker, as I find the pricing to be way too high for what is being offered. I bought the storm because it was 35% off, which still makes it too expensive, but moves into my 'I will try it once' category. Even if it is a good whisky, I refuse to pay beyond what I think is fair value. I am wary that I may just have to sideline scotch all together if prices keep going up. Vote with your wallets people!
Very harsh review of the Storm, I don’t think you’ll be making any friends at Talisker. But all reviews are just opinions, and you are entitled to yours. And I always look forward to your next review.
I got the older Storm for about $20 less than the 10. Still not worth it. I get a strong soapy note that I don’t care for. IMO this was basically a released when distilleries were running out of aged stocks. Just like the Bunnahabhain Stuiduar.
I don't get anything soapy, although there could be batch issues. At least it's considerably lower than the 10 in your market. I felt pretty burned after paying the same price!

@@sethcaine3659 I'm guessing about 20 closed 50 open.
@@Gwhisky not bad!
Same story for me with Port Ruighe (the port/sherry taste is not even very strong in that one). Dark Storm or Skye I did not try.
I much prefer the 10 to the port release, too. Dark Skye I haven't had in ages. I should try it again...
I just had The Storm and The Ten recently. The Storm has more peat.
The Storm is a good $15-25 cheaper in my market. But, given the choice between a NAS and an age stated bottle, I’m always going with the age statement.
Currently here in the UK it's £30 for the 10yr, £25 for Skye & £32 for the storm.
At those prices it's the 10 all day long although I'm tempted by the Port Ruighe as my next Talisker, available for just under £50 🤔
The 10 all day! 🥃
@@Gwhisky I have a few auction bottles to collect later this week which includes the earlier 10 (pre cartoon label) interested to see if there's any difference between both. 🥃🤔
Hope to hear back from you when you get the chance to pop it!
Diageo could literally pour half a dram of 25yo into a 200 cask batch and say that, so...
True...
39.99 at costco. So pretty good at that price.
I haven't tried the Storm (and I'm unlikely to buy it after this review when I can just have the 10!) yet, but here in Australia there's a AUD $10 (~US$7) difference between the 10 and Storm.
It is even more tricky with the Talisker Skye - why should you buy it when you get the Talisker 10 often times for around 25 Euro :O
Because the Skye tastes better imho.
@@BanjoSick you are 1st person who same opinion as mine. Especialy old bottling of Skye compare to new one of 10. Anyway i big Talisker fan and i like all T releases. I wish to all NAS's have Skye or Storm quality level. 🙋♂️
A big chain in my country (Netherlands) sells the 10yo for 14 euros cheaper than the Storm! What the heck!?
Man that's weird. People from all over the world seem to have different prices for this stuff in relation to the 10. Wild that they would charge more for this...
Its looks like there is Mental Hospital in Diageo these days. 🤦♀️🤷♂️🙋♂️
Here in BC the 10 yr is $119 Cdn and the Storm is $92. So it sounds like the Storm is worth a try with that difference......
For the price difference yeah it's perfectly reasonable to grab the Storm. Cheers! 🥃
I think, before they make the Storm cheaper, they will remove the 10 altogether. NAS whiskys just scale better with production...
Please don't take away the 10...
The storm is $21 dollars cheaper in U.S. Maryland $53 and the 10 year is $74 .
Yeah it's weird. The price difference between these two is all over the place in different markets.
i see ya change your mind on the talisker 10 from your review 3 months ago i think ya gave it a 82 here you give it 88 like yo see a update review for comparison
Old Label Storm used to be 34.99 at every store around me in the northeast. The new bottle is good but not worth the 40-50 I have been seeing it for.
Sorry to hear that. It's pretty much the same price here. Not surprised Diageo's pushing the prices up after the rebranding, though. 🥃
New design has literally made it look like supermarket whisky. Good reviews as usual man
Yeah.. I get the complaints against it. It's not as classy that's for sure. Cheers Andrew.
Well said, Ian! Prices are getting absurd!
the storm is 39 bucks at my local costco
And then there i also the skye... Don´t get that one xD I guess they were running out of stocks a decade ago :O
I think I tried it ages ago and the Skye was... not very memorable. Cheers!
Very harsh review of the Storm, I don’t think you’ll be making any friends at Talisker. But all reviews are just opinions, and you are entitled to yours. And I always look forward to your next review.
Actually not THAT harsh. The biggest problem I have with the Storm is that the 10 exists. Aside from that it's decent stuff! Hah.
@@Gwhisky its very true. All about pricing here. If Storm or Skye were 1/3 cheaper at regular everybody be happy and this discussion never exists.
Talisker Skye next?
Um... eventually? 😬
Well, now the Talisker 10 is 10$ to 20$ more expensive than the Storm. I believe I will pass on both.
Hahahaha, Storm in my market is 60€, and 10yo is 40€ 😂😂😂
Thats... insane. Hah.
Maybe the name Storm is about price 🤣
@@peatbull3426 it's rather outrageous, at the same time I've found last summer Talisker Dark Storm, 1L bottle at the airport for 52€. Prices are sometimes very hard to explain.
The last Talisker 10 I had was garbage.
The new labels are average haha....
Hah I'm fine with it.
LOL
