As a person that plays their PS5 more than anything else currently available, I completely agree about the backwards compatibility issue. It's ridiculous. Can't even play any PS3 games on it. Even with PS Plus Premium. You can only stream them. WTF??

People keep asking about these games like Socom and Killzone but back when these games were in their heyday they weren’t massive hits, which is why Sony doesn’t try to remake them. It’s easy to say hey I had fun with those games 10-15 years ago but the demographic who played those games aren’t as large as they used to be and now the targeted demographic are kids to teens who play games like Fortnite and battle royal games or COD. Time to move on and create new fun games instead of solely trying to live off older games.
They made it easy for themselves because they went the safe route. And they skipped the first generation... But even in this slide in the video you can see that you can play more Resident Evil games on the PS5 than on an Xbox. You can play the largest number of them on the PS5 actually.

Operation raccoon city, all legit backwards compatible on the Xbox. For bonus points I can also play onimusha 1, and devil may cry 1-5. Xbox has a shitload of games, just no good new IPs.

You could just keep your old ps3 or buy one that has full backwards compatibility. I’ve really no interest in playing old games I’ve beaten that look outdated. I’d like to see more remakes from the ground up running on modern engines/ graphics like the silent hill 2 remake or ff7 remake which are amazing and a huge improvement over the originals, but I’m good on the originals been there done that. No more blocky blurry 30 fps graphics for me.
@ADukesJustice If there isn't emulation in the console already to play the game on the disc, then it won't work. So this is the next best way. Emulation via digital form. And I've been getting a lot of the PS Classics for free as I have a lot of them on PS3 and PS Vita.

I mainly play on Xbox and I love the backwards compatibility! One thing really PISSED me off about PS. I never played Ape Escape back in the day and during covid I really got to see what I was missing. And I bought the first game…and I can’t the other two. One is locked behind PS+ with no option to buy! And the other isn’t available at all (I think because sony let someone else publish it at the time for some reason so it’s a little tricky but still) at least if I have the disc let me use it! Xbox does so why not PlayStation?!
Only remasters i want are resistance trilogy collection, killzone trilogy collection, motorstorm trilogy collection, infamous collection. Not horizon zero dawn remastered.

you don't need jailbroken too much, it has developer mode, which has emulation freedom. So.. it probably COULD run ps4-ps5 games... like NOW.. i believe last year when WOLVERINE came out LEAKED pc version.. some used that LEAKED PC VERSION EMU... to run it on the Xbox Series X DEV mode.

This is why I prefer the Xbox Series X and its ecosystem. I get to play a lot of older games and my discs right on the console. Playstation lost me as a fan after they stopped making, SOCOM, Resistance, MAG, Killzone, Warhawk. Not interested in spiderman, horizon, etc etc story game. Not a majority opinion but I liked old Playstation who made exclusive shooters better than now.

I get it, but Kratos ended up a much better character because of it. In the OG trilogy there wasn't that much depth to his personality other than "BIG MAD!"

I had to get all my teeth removed last year because the chemo I was taking for my bone cancer in my knee from 2010 to 2022 ruined my teeth. Turned them into broken glass and I was fighting an infection in my jaw becausethe chemo lowered my immune system in my jaw and they werent healing. Next I had to get part of my jaw removed because the infection eroded through. It's been over 6 months and I have no infection and next I'm going to get bone graft in my jaw around the metal plate. My life is definitely getting better since I took my jaw/dental health more seriously.
Dude, you're not crazy, and you're not alone. I just gave up and re-bought a PS3 and a ton of used physical games online, and at a local retro store. I play what I want, when I want, without a subscription, and without being dictated to by Sony.
Bro nobody wants to work on the same old thing for the entirety of thier career. There comes a point when you wanna switch stuff up, otherwise the franchise becomes stale because the original developers morale depletes and they are only trying to appease their investors and not doing it for the love of the game itself. Look at halo for example, Bungie got tired of it, hasn't been good since because the original developers are not a part of it anymore. There will come a time when they get tired of horizon and move on to yet another new IP. Only a matter of time.
Sony has lost their way this generation. It feels like Xbox is looking towards the future and Sony is just putting old games out. I’m sure people will pile on me but for real the PS5 generation has been a total disappointment.
The only reason i got a ps5 was because my ps4 stopped installing discs. That and sparking zero was the only reason that made me consider getting a ps5.
The lack of the original RE trilogy is pretty tragic. They could put them in the PlayStation classics library and even on NSO in the case of RE2 for N64 (and if GameCube NSO becomes a thing then they could also add 3 and Code Veronica).
Capcom wouldn't let you buy them if they added them. RE1 and Dino Crisis are Premium only. Can't even buy them. In the UK you can gey RE1. But not Dino Crisis.
@theshadowdirector Ages ago. They just give you both PAL and NTSC versions of the games now. And with Resi 1 you'd want to be playing The PAL version as even though it's PAL it's the best version of Resi 1. I think in that version they use frame interpolation to make it feel like 60hz while being 50hz.
I would pay $800 or $900 for a Playstation that could play every Gen games. I would love to clear up my gaming setup but to play them all I have to have a PS2, PS3 and PS5. I have all of the discs, I should be able to play them all in 1 console. And then also there is the fear of one of the consoles I have dying and then I cant play a good chunk of my games any longer.
This is one area where the xbox wins, they are committed to making your purchases of the games they made/make carry forward with your account and they even built amazing emulators to make that happen. They don't get enough credit for that imo.
Sounds like you just need a pc. I’ve been emulating ps1 ps2 and ps3 with no issues. A ps4 emulator is also in the works as they got bloodborne running the other day
The last Sony console I've bought was the PS3. I typically dislike movie like games and I enjoy more arcade pick up and play games. I love my PS3 and I still use it about twice a month!
So No Days gone, No Bloodborne, No Killzone, so I as a long time PS fan feeling betrayed, so I decided to stop buying PS first party studios games just buying third party or indies nothing else.

The only people who want to play retro games are people who experienced those games when they came out. I can't blame Sony for focusing on the future which newer games prefer newer games or games that released within their time period and not 1997. I'm a older gamer and I have come to realization that we don't matter as much as sustainability of Playstation's future.
The money Xbox spent on studio's at least 2-3 AAA a year, retro gaming can be emulated on PC for free, shadow collosus, ico, onimusha, vagrant story, wildarms, ssx tricky,need for speed, plenty to remake, grand turismo to expensive to make, takes 1/4 of PS budget.

@phippes32 If the rumours are true. The end of the year or sometime at the beginning of next year the PS3 emulator will be added as PS5/PS5 Pro are there to get PS3 emulation working well enough now. Don't expect base PS5 PS3 emulation to be anything special though. Probably just get the games working and running well. Like what emulation on Xbox One was like at first. Maybe PSSR can be used for them on the PS5 Pro. But we'll see.
One of the greatest benefits of playing older games is that you could also buy a Beautifully made Gorgeous strategy guide Book for the game itself, and as you play through the game you can also enjoy each page of Information and Wonderful Artwork to add even more hours of great gaming and great memories. What do you get now when you buy a game ? ... A single disk in an empty box and that's it.
I am one person that loves old school games and I own 5 different consoles to play almost any game, from the oldest to the newest. Often I see how old games are better in many ways than many of today, because many modern ones repeat the same formula over and over again and want to be grandiose, but in fact lack the originality and fun factor that once were more frequent. Perhaps that is the reason for so many failures nowadays. They forgot it.
Hear me out, I come from 2030, Xbox and Sony Will launch a new store for their Next Gen devices. Everything Will be remastered and resold at a higher price. GTA6 releases in feb 2026 btw, a It Will be the first AAA Next Gen game barely hitting 30 on PS5 Pro. Not available on PS5
Biggest title I play on my PS5 is The Legend of Dragoon. As soon as the re-released it I bought it right away, and I believe it deserves a full remake.
yes companies should do everything in their power to preserve their older games. They need to make sure there is always a way to play them for new gamers to discover & older gamers to relive the memories.
I put a SSD in my PS3 as doing so fixes Fallout 3 and New Vegas save file issue where eventually everything slows to a crawl and it improves world streaming and mitigates hitches. Using one also improves Rages texture streaming and it GTA4 improves world streaming. The PS Store also doesn't crash anymore when using a SSD.
I'm just not seeing the appeal of playing older games on any of the consoles, emulating the games on your PC will give you the better experience anyway. Like why pay monthly/yearly for the NSO when free emulators do it better? It just makes no sense...
The most disappointing part of all this is how they have all these great IPs in their pocket and they are choosing to do nothing with them. Jak and Daxter, Killzone, Sly Cooper, etc. They would kill in sales. Guerrilla Games should stop making Horizon games and go back to Killzone for a bit.

And before anyone says 'oh but the PS3 and before that had different architecture and therefore it's difficult to emulate', no offence intended but what a load of garbage. I am so sick of that excuse. You know just as well as I do that if Sony REALLY wanted to give us full backwards compatibility with the PS5, they would have and they would have found a way to do it. But they didn't. And you know who it's all because of? Yep, Jim Ryan. Does anyone remember way back when, when the PS5 was first announced and Mark Cerny teased that this console would have full backwards compatibility back to the PS1, because that was his passion, and then just before release of the console they did a complete 180 and scrapped that and instead spent that R&D on the implementation of the SSD? That had ZERO to do with architectural issues and EVERYTHING to do with Jim Ryan being quoted at a conference by saying, and I quote 'oh who wants to play old games on a next gen console'. People can debate about it all they like, but he DID say that. This is ALL Jim Ryan. If the XBox Series X has no problem doing this with their games and giving full backwards compatibility, then why not Sony?
I think Sony realizes the complete lack of creativity in the gaming world. I think they're going to try and be slick and just remake all the great old games for new game prices.
I agree with they shouldn’t just kill off older characters but this was how it was with Nintendo, Super Nintendo, 64 and so on. You have to play those games on the older systems unless you emulate. Most companies since the 80s just want you to play what what’s latest and greatest. But I think they should add more to the store so you can purchase them at a small fee.
Over the last couple of years I have been trying to get back a lot of the old classic gamesthat I used to hit back in the day. Just recently I was able to get legacy of Kain defiance and bloodrayne 2 for ps2. The console works just fine but there is no getting around the fact that it is well over 20 years old by now and who knows how much longer it will work. Finding these old consoles that are still in good working order is getting harder and harder all the time and without backwards compatibility on the current generation machines who knows how much longer I will be able to play these games.
It also really sucks that none of the old Silent Hill franchise are available through PSN either, and unless you pirate them they are extremely expensive. Yet another franchise abandoned.
Developers have been making irrational decisions, like skipping the Switch on games being released on the PS4 while also skipping the PS4 on games being released on both the PS5 and the Switch. Anything that can run on the Switch can run on the PS4, so requiring a PS5 for such games makes no sense.. 😊
Fable 2 was probably the best rpg iv'e ever played, and it's great that the series x upscales it to 4k using the original disk, making it better than on the original console.
Sony is sitting on a gold mine of old games and they do nothing with them. Running these companies are super easy but when you hire bad leadership they make it hard.

I would love some kind of a Re version of the Resistance Games. Reimagined, reissued, remake etc. Sony just doesn’t seem to give a shit about their back catalog. So much money left on the table, and possible alienation of their customer base.
Even though it’s a different architecture from a different company, using the RPCS3 emulator, even with some of its limitations, it’s crazy to think that the Steam Deck can play a lot of PS3 games better than either PS4/PS5. Sony’s own proprietary hardware.

You could just keep your old ps3 or buy one that has full backwards compatibility. I’ve really no interest in playing old games I’ve beaten that look outdated. I’d like to see more remakes from the ground up running on modern engines/ graphics like the silent hill 2 remake or ff7 remake which are amazing and a huge improvement over the originals, but I’m good on the originals been there done that. No more blocky blurry 30 fps graphics for me.

@ADukesJustice If there isn't emulation in the console already to play the game on the disc, then it won't work. So this is the next best way. Emulation via digital form. And I've been getting a lot of the PS Classics for free as I have a lot of them on PS3 and PS Vita.

I mainly play on Xbox and I love the backwards compatibility! One thing really PISSED me off about PS. I never played Ape Escape back in the day and during covid I really got to see what I was missing. And I bought the first game…and I can’t the other two. One is locked behind PS+ with no option to buy! And the other isn’t available at all (I think because sony let someone else publish it at the time for some reason so it’s a little tricky but still) at least if I have the disc let me use it! Xbox does so why not PlayStation?!

As funny as that sounds, PS5 is likely to be long before that happens the ways things are going. And it already has a lot of fully to partially working emulators in there.
You can already use dev mode on Xbox and load it up with any emulator you want.
you don't need jailbroken too much, it has developer mode, which has emulation freedom. So.. it probably COULD run ps4-ps5 games... like NOW.. i believe last year when WOLVERINE came out LEAKED pc version.. some used that LEAKED PC VERSION EMU... to run it on the Xbox Series X DEV mode.
PS5 doesn't have a development mode, and on XBS it is limited in functionality and capacity, while still being a paid extra.

How is SERIES s dev mode more limited than XSX? Its not the drive^ .. its not the POWER.. mostly CPU used for this emulation... so xsx16 core cpu xss16 core cpu... cores are 0.1 or 0.15 ghz less.... that's it, between series S and Series X basically same CPU. that is used for this.

This is why I prefer the Xbox Series X and its ecosystem. I get to play a lot of older games and my discs right on the console. Playstation lost me as a fan after they stopped making, SOCOM, Resistance, MAG, Killzone, Warhawk. Not interested in spiderman, horizon, etc etc story game. Not a majority opinion but I liked old Playstation who made exclusive shooters better than now.

I had to get all my teeth removed last year because the chemo I was taking for my bone cancer in my knee from 2010 to 2022 ruined my teeth. Turned them into broken glass and I was fighting an infection in my jaw becausethe chemo lowered my immune system in my jaw and they werent healing. Next I had to get part of my jaw removed because the infection eroded through.
It's been over 6 months and I have no infection and next I'm going to get bone graft in my jaw around the metal plate.
My life is definitely getting better since I took my jaw/dental health more seriously.
Dude, you're not crazy, and you're not alone. I just gave up and re-bought a PS3 and a ton of used physical games online, and at a local retro store. I play what I want, when I want, without a subscription, and without being dictated to by Sony.
I never got rid of mine. Because why would I? I have so many games for the PS3.

There comes a point when you wanna switch stuff up, otherwise the franchise becomes stale because the original developers morale depletes and they are only trying to appease their investors and not doing it for the love of the game itself.
Look at halo for example, Bungie got tired of it, hasn't been good since because the original developers are not a part of it anymore.
There will come a time when they get tired of horizon and move on to yet another new IP. Only a matter of time.

I'm getting a PS5 Pro just because it's slimmer, has a back USB C port and has a 2TB SSD.
My PS4 was showing the white light and would freeze consistently even after cleaning the inside. Silent Hill 2 is a reason why I got a PS5 last year.

The lack of the original RE trilogy is pretty tragic. They could put them in the PlayStation classics library and even on NSO in the case of RE2 for N64 (and if GameCube NSO becomes a thing then they could also add 3 and Code Veronica).
Capcom wouldn't let you buy them if they added them. RE1 and Dino Crisis are Premium only. Can't even buy them. In the UK you can gey RE1. But not Dino Crisis.

@theshadowdirector Ages ago. They just give you both PAL and NTSC versions of the games now. And with Resi 1 you'd want to be playing The PAL version as even though it's PAL it's the best version of Resi 1. I think in that version they use frame interpolation to make it feel like 60hz while being 50hz.

I would pay $800 or $900 for a Playstation that could play every Gen games. I would love to clear up my gaming setup but to play them all I have to have a PS2, PS3 and PS5. I have all of the discs, I should be able to play them all in 1 console. And then also there is the fear of one of the consoles I have dying and then I cant play a good chunk of my games any longer.
This is one area where the xbox wins, they are committed to making your purchases of the games they made/make carry forward with your account and they even built amazing emulators to make that happen. They don't get enough credit for that imo.

The last Sony console I've bought was the PS3. I typically dislike movie like games and I enjoy more arcade pick up and play games. I love my PS3 and I still use it about twice a month!
I owned every Sony console including the handhelds but the last one I owned was the PS4 slim. Never again.
So No Days gone, No Bloodborne, No Killzone, so I as a long time PS fan feeling betrayed, so I decided to stop buying PS first party studios games just buying third party or indies nothing else.

Console sales mean nothing when exclusive games are only selling 3.5 million and not breaking even. Ps5 is a failure. The only people who want to play retro games are people who experienced those games when they came out. The money Xbox spent on studio's at least 2-3 AAA a year, retro gaming can be emulated on PC for free, shadow collosus, ico, onimusha, vagrant story, wildarms, ssx tricky,need for speed, plenty to remake, grand turismo to expensive to make, takes 1/4 of PS budget.
New God of war "Dad of War" story is great. He had a wife and kid, and it changed him hugely. And wives and kids will change you hugely.

Resistance Retribution is on PS5 as a PS Classic. I bought that day 1. They also included the infected mode.

@phippes32 If the rumours are true. The end of the year or sometime at the beginning of next year the PS3 emulator will be added as PS5/PS5 Pro are there to get PS3 emulation working well enough now. Don't expect base PS5 PS3 emulation to be anything special though. Probably just get the games working and running well. Like what emulation on Xbox One was like at first. Maybe PSSR can be used for them on the PS5 Pro. But we'll see.
One of the greatest benefits of playing older games is that you could also buy a Beautifully made Gorgeous strategy guide Book for the game itself, and as you play through the game you can also enjoy each page of Information and Wonderful Artwork to add even more hours of great gaming and great memories. What do you get now when you buy a game ? ... A single disk in an empty box and that's it.
I am one person that loves old school games and I own 5 different consoles to play almost any game, from the oldest to the newest. Often I see how old games are better in many ways than many of today, because many modern ones repeat the same formula over and over again and want to be grandiose, but in fact lack the originality and fun factor that once were more frequent. Perhaps that is the reason for so many failures nowadays. They forgot it.

i got dev mode on my xbox series s running all ps1 ps2 psp games and more
I put a SSD in my PS3 as doing so fixes Fallout 3 and New Vegas save file issue where eventually everything slows to a crawl and it improves world streaming and mitigates hitches. Using one also improves Rages texture streaming and it GTA4 improves world streaming. The PS Store also doesn't crash anymore when using a SSD.
I'm just not seeing the appeal of playing older games on any of the consoles, emulating the games on your PC will give you the better experience anyway.
Like why pay monthly/yearly for the NSO when free emulators do it better? It just makes no sense...
The most disappointing part of all this is how they have all these great IPs in their pocket and they are choosing to do nothing with them. Jak and Daxter, Killzone, Sly Cooper, etc. They would kill in sales. Guerrilla Games should stop making Horizon games and go back to Killzone for a bit.

And before anyone says 'oh but the PS3 and before that had different architecture and therefore it's difficult to emulate', no offence intended but what a load of garbage. I am so sick of that excuse. You know just as well as I do that if Sony REALLY wanted to give us full backwards compatibility with the PS5, they would have and they would have found a way to do it. But they didn't. And you know who it's all because of? Yep, Jim Ryan. Does anyone remember way back when, when the PS5 was first announced and Mark Cerny teased that this console would have full backwards compatibility back to the PS1, because that was his passion, and then just before release of the console they did a complete 180 and scrapped that and instead spent that R&D on the implementation of the SSD? That had ZERO to do with architectural issues and EVERYTHING to do with Jim Ryan being quoted at a conference by saying, and I quote 'oh who wants to play old games on a next gen console'. People can debate about it all they like, but he DID say that. This is ALL Jim Ryan. If the XBox Series X has no problem doing this with their games and giving full backwards compatibility, then why not Sony?

I think Sony realizes the complete lack of creativity in the gaming world. I think they're going to try and be slick and just remake all the great old games for new game prices.
I agree with they shouldn’t just kill off older characters but this was how it was with Nintendo, Super Nintendo, 64 and so on. You have to play those games on the older systems unless you emulate. Most companies since the 80s just want you to play what what’s latest and greatest. But I think they should add more to the store so you can purchase them at a small fee.

Over the last couple of years I have been trying to get back a lot of the old classic gamesthat I used to hit back in the day. Just recently I was able to get legacy of Kain defiance and bloodrayne 2 for ps2. The console works just fine but there is no getting around the fact that it is well over 20 years old by now and who knows how much longer it will work. Finding these old consoles that are still in good working order is getting harder and harder all the time and without backwards compatibility on the current generation machines who knows how much longer I will be able to play these games.
It also really sucks that none of the old Silent Hill franchise are available through PSN either, and unless you pirate them they are extremely expensive. Yet another franchise abandoned.

Developers have been making irrational decisions, like skipping the Switch on games being released on the PS4 while also skipping the PS4 on games being released on both the PS5 and the Switch.
Anything that can run on the Switch can run on the PS4, so requiring a PS5 for such games makes no sense.. 😊
Fable 2 was probably the best rpg iv'e ever played, and it's great that the series x upscales it to 4k using the original disk, making it better than on the original console.

Sony is sitting on a gold mine of old games and they do nothing with them. Running these companies are super easy but when you hire bad leadership they make it hard.
I'm extremely disappointed with the direction Sony are taking. I've been so bored that my PS5 has hardly gotten any use in 2024 and I've been just using my SWITCH.
I would love some kind of a Re version of the Resistance Games. Reimagined, reissued, remake etc. Sony just doesn’t seem to give a shit about their back catalog. So much money left on the table, and possible alienation of their customer base.

Even though it’s a different architecture from a different company, using the RPCS3 emulator, even with some of its limitations, it’s crazy to think that the Steam Deck can play a lot of PS3 games better than either PS4/PS5. Sony’s own proprietary hardware.
Man my ps3 hit the rlod and ive forever been heart broken. The lack of full backwards campatability i think has slowly killed a section of the market for fans of the console. Still holding my breath for an infamous 1 and 2 remaster.

No more Twisted Metal, Ape Escape, Syphon Filter, Days Gone, Legend of Dragoon, Alundra, Legend of Legaia, Infamous, and numerous other dead franchises that Sony could use to fill in the gaps between their triple a big budget games.
