Just because it had two forward facing high/mid drivers (exactly the same and being driven by the SAME signal) does not make it stereo. Hi Alan, looking forward to your review on JBL charge 5 in stereo mode vs Xtreme.. might not be muffled because of the dedicated tweeter, unlike the charge 4 with single driver doing all the stuff
@@alanrossreviews I'm wondering which is a better option, having two charge 5s playing in stereo mode, or charge 5 + Xtreme 3 playing in partyboost? I'll lose the benefits of having left/right channel speaker if I chose the latter though
Looks like it might not be worth spending money on a second speaker if there is little improvement in sound experience. A case of the law of diminishing returns applied here.
Did you use a iPhone/iPad for testing Connect +? My iPhone had a MAJOR problem with BT connectivity to this system. I now use a Samsung phone and it's works perfectly. Can you compare Connect+ using iPhone and Android phones? I found using my iPhone that the Connect+ app loses connection when switching to another app, you have to restart BT for the app to see the speakers again to be able to change to stereo/party modes again etc. With Android phone it takes 5 seconds for the second to be identified in the Connect+ app, I find this to be normal considering only the first speaker is connecting to the phone by BT, and the other speaker(s) takes a few seconds to sync with the first.
I hope you don't mind I like to ask a question about your review of the Metabone speed booster and Lumix G80/85, can this combo allow the camera body to operate in Continous Autofocus mode with Canon lenses?
Thks if too slow can you use it to track a person's face in video mode? I suppose not. Do you know why so many users employ this combo, sigma 18-35mm and GH5 it seems to work very well in video mode incl tracking?
Hi Alan, i am about to buy my first Xtreme 2. Already have a charge 3 with connect plus. Would you suggest to add another charge 3 or flip 4 to the mix? I might use 2 charge-3s in stereo mode if i go with 2nd charge-3. Can you give it a try for me and test 2x charge-3s with xtreme-2 ??
for me personally, 2 charge 3s in stereo is still my fav go to setup. So of course with the xtreme i still prefer the charge 3 over the flip 4 because the charge 3 fills the mids a bit against the xtreme 2.
Alan Ross the Boss you helped me buy two charge 3s many moons ago. I love them but if I wanted to add one more speaker to the setup totaling three which would it be? I already have them both on connect plus.I love bass. I was thinking a charge 4.
@@alanrossreviews yeah it’s all I can do since I upgraded both charge 3s to connect plus. I’m ok without the stereo. I was just thinking which other speaker would compliment the other two in party mode. I keep thinking charge 4 or xtreme 2.

I was thinking of selling them for two charge 5s but now that they do stereo again I’m just gonna get the xtreme 2 for three speaker party mode.
hey alan ross reviews .... thanks for all your work u been doing really grateful for them ok especially on the charge 4 .... my opinion is that i really like the charge 4 its still a great speaker to me ... even thou its a mono speaker but i guess its a bit more powerful .... and for such a speaker thats not 2 big stereo inst an issue as it still plays almost centered ... u cant really notice its right sided .... i love the more punchy bass heavy and nice .... so despite a lot of bad comments about it .... i love it and still plan to get 1 .... and i have a charge 3 already and i can pair them .... so i think its still a improvement over the charge 3 ... plus even thou a sonyxb31 may sound louder the charge 4 has nicer bass etc .... what do u think about it .... its great same way ...
thanks for the feedback :) yes if your main criteria is bass pounch and fuller bass it doesnt sound bad at all. only if you listen over a longer period does this become a bit tiring because its lacking in almost every other area. i did prefer the charge 4 over the charge 3 when i first heard it. but having spent longer with it for me the weaknesses are bigger than the plusses. if you just want better bass then the xtreme 2 is a better but offering more across the sound spectrum. if you want more clarity then charge 3 still wins. charge 4 handles vocals well but in the end for me its just too forward and tiring for along listen. great though if you want a decent bass punch on tracks and do not want a bigger speaker.
Hi Alan. I have one Charge 3 and one Charge 4. If I want to do the stereo mode, would you recommend the Charge 3 over the 4? The 3 has enough bass and I don’t need to shatter my neighbors. Thanks for any advice!
Well, I bought the Charge 3 and next I’ll get the anker soundcore motion+ thanks to your sample test and sound charts. You have the most educational videos in audio, we are lucky. Thank you kindly.
ah thats a tough one. The charge 3 will have lower bass for movies while the flip will be clearer for dialogue. You will also likely have sync issues if streaming. Personally i would go with charge 3 as better all rounder but lack of clear highs could be an issue.
@@alanrossreviews thank you. I think I would go with charge3. Do you think it worth it to update to connect plus. I know you did a video about it but it was in 2017, I think there are some update in the app, anything changes since then?
@@rooneyviet what hasnt changed is the need to set stereo in the app in and everytime you startup the speakers. This is a big hassle. Thats what you have to ask, what is the benefit to you on connect plus against that?
if i get a chance but i already covered it with party and stereo mode. for me charge 4 cant match the xtreme 2 for size of sound or body across the spectrum, it just matches in the bass region for punch but again not as deep. one charge 4 vs one xtreme 2 do you mean?

Alan Ross Reviews Just found the xtreme 1 for £150 and the xtreme 2 for £210, don't know whether to go for one of them instead not as portable but o well, they are cheap. Or maybe a dockin d fine. Still want a C4 but at £160 the on sale xtreme 2 ain't far off.
Would you prefer two minirigs 2( in low gain) over two charge 3 for normal listening? And does the bass of the minirigs remain that smooth and deep at high gain if the volume levels are matched ?
if you find low gain goes loud enough then i do prefer it over the 2x charge 3. my main issue is lack of waterproof so its harder to use it for bath/shower or by a pool if its gonna get well splashed.
Hey so good news. You can actually play two flip 4’s in stereo with a charge 3 playing party. I don’t know why no one tried this but go in the connect app and just connect the two flip fours together into stereo.then leave the app(don’t close it) and press the connect plus button on the charge 3. The two flips will stay in stereo unless you stop the music.it sounds amazing but you have to go through the process every time the music stops
Coming from a complete audio noob: I'm hoping to use some combination of speakers to a projector with the sole purpose of watching movies outside (social distancing!) Which of these traits do you think is more appropriate for that scenario? (clarity? bass? other?) And what speaker(s) would you recommend in that case?
are you using wired or bluetooth? consider the latency with bluetooth. if wired then of course must have speaker with aux. moves you need bass and clarity but clarity trumps bass otherwise you cant hear what they are saying.
@@alanrossreviews Thanks for the tip! Since JBL can't connect multiples while using aux (AFAIK) the plan is to send video from the laptop to the projector, and audio to the speakers via bluetooth (adding video latency on VLC to make up for audio latency) It seems to me that two Charge 3s might weirdly still be the better option for my scenario? Are we still able to make them stereo in 2020?
charge 3 if you want a bit more airy stereo and mids first, charge 4 if you want slightly boosted and bigger bass and more accurate overall, but still bass heavy. charge 3 is more laid back and works with any music, its inoffensive. harsh at high volume.
Hello Sir! Oh my, I just ordered 2 charge 4's, over 2 flip 5's. Got the charge 4's for $113 00 us. Thought issues might resolve by pairing in stereo. You've made it clear that is not necessarily so! Ugh! Live and learn. I DO like my bass, but like clear top end as well. So, my question is this then - do you feel an android eq app would help. And if so, is there a free eq app you would recommend? Also, I have a droid tablet with atmos Dolby. Think that might help? Or, send the charge 4's back and get a pair of flip 5s. I will say, unpaired in the store, I preferred the charge 4 over the flip 5 sound wise. Thoughts here good Sir? Anyone else wish to comment all thoughts most welcome. Great review by the way!!! charge 4 and flip 5 have similar signature, thin bass peak but lowish and a big v shape to the sound. i dont use any app since i am never happy with the outcome, i only use eq if its embeddded. eq will help of course but its a band aid you can never remove. why not the motion plus or denon 250? even the xb33 will sound clearer but won't match that one note bass on the jbl speakers.

I think, Harman kardon usually develops more pricey speakers for the people who is willing to pay more for hi-fi like speakers...On the other hand, JBL aims young generations usually and so it's normal to make bass heavy speakers.
yeah i get what your saying, except i would have expected them to at least keep the line consistent, i.e. charge 3 was mid focused but the charge 4 throws that tuning away to go with the likes of the flip 4 and xtreme 2, and the mono driver that doesnt go as loud, for me thats the disappointment. While not calling the charge 4 bad for what it is, it just doesnt give anything other than better bass to owners of the charge 3. i get that its kinda throwaway brand for the young and lively but they are in danger of bluring the lines, other than actual size of speaker.
@@alanrossreviews I had more expectations from Charge 4 but I believe that Charge 3 owners will not change their speakers for Charge 4. Alan Ross Reviews you are right. I hear the bass on 2x charge4 nicer than on xtreme2. I’m still thinking in buying 2 charge4 and 2 mini minirigs and play them in 2.2. 2 charge4 have tighter and more precise bass than the minirig sub.
@@migk2686 I wouldnt do this, it won't be balanced with charge 4s still playing all the spectrum. Hi Alan, looking forward to your review on JBL charge 5 in stereo mode vs Xtreme.. might not be muffled because of the dedicated tweeter, unlike the charge 4 with single driver doing all the stuff
Stereo mode? Do you mean two charge 5s?
@@alanrossreviews I'm wondering which is a better option, having two charge 5s playing in stereo mode, or charge 5 + Xtreme 3 playing in partyboost? I'll lose the benefits of having left/right channel speaker if I chose the latter though
Great channel!
Charge 4 + Flip 4
Vs
Charge 4 + charge 4
which pair is louder?
Can Charge 4 + Flip 4 sound stereo?
Thank you very much
get 2 charge 4s. the charge 4 is louder and you must have same model speaker for stereo.
Looks like it might not be worth spending money on a second speaker if there is little improvement in sound experience. A case of the law of diminishing returns applied here.
the main benefit is to get stereo.
Hi again Alan, by the way, subscribed, good stuff man!!!
Awesome, thank you!
With Android phone it takes 5 seconds for the second to be identified in the Connect+ app, I find this to be normal considering only the first speaker is connecting to the phone by BT, and the other speaker(s) takes a few seconds to sync with the first.
i only use android, i do not go anywhere near apple jailhouse :)
What about two Extreme 2's against...

I hope you don't mind I like to ask a question about your review of the Metabone speed booster and Lumix G80/85, can this combo allow the camera body to operate in Continous Autofocus mode with Canon lenses?
No it's too slow for continuous focus. Other wise it works well.
Thks if too slow can you use it to track a person's face in video mode? I suppose not. Do you know why so many users employ this combo, sigma 18-35mm and GH5 it seems to work very well in video mode incl tracking?
@@yttean98 most of them are using manual focus for video, forget any sort of auto fucus for video with that combo.
Alan Ross Reviews thanks for the answer Alan! I also noticed that you’ve already put up another video about 2x charge-3s + 1x xtreme-2.

I was thinking of selling them for two charge 5s but now that they do stereo again I’m just gonna get the xtreme 2 for three speaker party mode.
I am listening this video on charge3 and while comparing 2x charge 4 vs Xtreme2, I found charge 4's pair more deeper bass. I may be wrong
you really cant get anything from my videos listening back on the charge 3.
hey alan ross reviews .... thanks for all your work u been doing really grateful for them ok especially on the charge 4 .... my opinion is that i really like the charge 4 its still a great speaker to me ... even thou its a mono speaker but i guess its a bit more powerful .... and for such a speaker thats not 2 big stereo inst an issue as it still plays almost centered ... u cant really notice its right sided .... i love the more punchy bass heavy and nice .... so despite a lot of bad comments about it .... i love it and still plan to get 1 .... and i have a charge 3 already and i can pair them .... so i think its still a improvement over the charge 3 ... plus even thou a sonyxb31 may sound louder the charge 4 has nicer bass etc .... what do u think about it .... its great same way ...
thanks for the feedback :) yes if your main criteria is bass pounch and fuller bass it doesnt sound bad at all. only if you listen over a longer period does this become a bit tiring because its lacking in almost every other area. i did prefer the charge 4 over the charge 3 when i first heard it. but having spent longer with it for me the weaknesses are bigger than the plusses. if you just want better bass then the xtreme 2 is a better but offering more across the sound spectrum. if you want more clarity then charge 3 still wins. charge 4 handles vocals well but in the end for me its just too forward and tiring for along listen. great though if you want a decent bass punch on tracks and do not want a bigger speaker.
It is still worth buying 2nd charge 4 in 2023 as i already own one?
if you have one then a second will open up the sound nicely.
Hi Alan. I have one Charge 3 and one Charge 4. If I want to do the stereo mode, would you recommend the Charge 3 over the 4? The 3 has enough bass and I don’t need to shatter my neighbors. Thanks for any advice!
i prefer charge 3, charge 4 too boomy in stereo for me. charge 3 is more airy.

@@Gamerlingual good decision 😝
Well, I bought the Charge 3 and next I’ll get the anker soundcore motion+ thanks to your sample test and sound charts. You have the most educational videos in audio, we are lucky. Thank you kindly.
Hi Alan, I'm considering 2 flip4, or 2 charge3 (with connect plus update), which do you recommend? My use is pop r&b music, and movies.
ah thats a tough one.
I know you did a video about it but it was in 2017, I think there are some update in the app, anything changes since then?

if i get a chance but i already covered it with party and stereo mode. for me charge 4 cant match the xtreme 2 for size of sound or body across the spectrum, it just matches in the bass region for punch but again not as deep. one charge 4 vs one xtreme 2 do you mean?
Alan Ross Reviews ok thanks, yes
Hello, good reviews.
Which do you prefer or what would be better for hip hop and rock? the Sony xb30 or the jbl charge 4.
hum, i might be tempted to say sony given the limitations of the charge 4 outside of being bass heavy with good impact.

How much difference is there between the 30 and the charge 4?
Apart from price.😉

Is there a considerable difference between the c4 and 30?
I will pair them but the 30 is £85 and the c4 is £160 quite a bit of difference.
I like the sound of the charge 3 I just would like a bit more bass.
There are so many different opinions everywhere it's hard to pick.🤔

Would you prefer two minirigs 2( in low gain) over two charge 3 for normal listening? And does the bass of the minirigs remain that smooth and deep at high gain if the volume levels are matched ?
if you find low gain goes loud enough then i do prefer it over the 2x charge 3. my main issue is lack of waterproof so its harder to use it for bath/shower or by a pool if its gonna get well splashed.
How s the difference between 2 charge 4 or 2 X2 in stereo mode?
x2 is altogether a bigger sound, 2xc4 cannot match 2x x2s
I have flip4.I need your help.
Which is better sound 2×flip4 stereo or flip4+charge3 partymode?
deja vu! i think you already asked this? i would always prefer the option of having stereo.
Hahaha!
Question.. Are we able to use stereo mode feature of JBL if suing a laptop?
you can with an android emulator.
Coming from a complete audio noob: I'm hoping to use some combination of speakers to a projector with the sole purpose of watching movies outside (social distancing!)
Which of these traits do you think is more appropriate for that scenario? (clarity? bass? other?) And what speaker(s) would you recommend in that case?
are you using wired or bluetooth? consider the latency with bluetooth. if wired then of course must have speaker with aux. moves you need bass and clarity but clarity trumps bass otherwise you cant hear what they are saying.
@@alanrossreviews Thanks for the tip! Since JBL can't connect multiples while using aux (AFAIK) the plan is to send video from the laptop to the projector, and audio to the speakers via bluetooth (adding video latency on VLC to make up for audio latency)
It seems to me that two Charge 3s might weirdly still be the better option for my scenario? Are we still able to make them stereo in 2020?
Can 2 charge 4 have stereo watching a movie from a blurry player ? Or a tv with Bluetooth ?
the problem will be latency
What do you mean ?
lip sync issues
What do you think would be a better pair charge 3 x2 or charge 3 and a charge 4
charge 3 if you want a bit more airy stereo and mids first, charge 4 if you want slightly boosted and bigger bass and more accurate overall, but still bass heavy. charge 3 is more laid back and works with any music, its inoffensive. harsh at high volume.
Do the dual charge 4's lose some highs in party mode too?
to be honest, i cant even remember... 🤒
Bravo!!! 😎🍀👍
Sorry, was $122 00 us, forgot, I wanted the "squad" camo color so they got me for a few extra bucks! One might ask what is the point in camo on something that loud? That is a fair question!!! lol... Just looks cool to me I guess lol 😆
charge 4 and flip 5 have similar signature, thin bass peak but lowish and a big v shape to the sound. i dont use any app since i am never happy with the outcome, i only use eq if its embeddded. eq will help of course but its a band aid you can never remove. why not the motion plus or denon 250? even the xb33 will sound clearer but won't match that one note bass on the jbl speakers.
@@alanrossreviews thank you for your thoughts good Sir! You're channel is amazing, WELL DONE man! 😎🍀👍

So, at this point, the pair of Charge 4 hitting my stoop tomorrow. My thought is what the heck, try them and see what I think! I'm now getting bogged down in reviews...
What I'm noting in your contributions is that sound is quite subjective. A think a listen for myself can't hurt, eh? 😎👍
Your thoughts on non native eq's duly noted, permanent bandaids sound unhealthy at best! Gross 😜😂

You can only have party mode, you need same model speaker for stereo.
@@aktunav its going to come down to if they value bass over everything else.
