- French forces smashed through dozens of barricades in a bid to retake the main road to New Caledonia's airport and a top official said Sunday that Paris would reclaim all of the Pacific territory from pro-independence militants "whatever the cost." If you boycott a vote and refuse to vote you hand the other side an easy victory, you should *ALWAYS* vote when the vote effects you or the movement that you’re a part of…
The Kanak people who refused to vote only have *THEMSELVES* to blame for losing the independence vote that they wanted…

lol the Caldoche people have been there since 1853 and all people who have voted in favored of staying in France in the last 3 referendums (Caldoches and Kanaks) are all born there from several generations and have the same rights to be there. As Nelson Mandela said “only through hardship, sacrifice and militant action can freedom be won” and the Kanak people deserve freedom.

There have been 3 referendums in New Caledonia that they lost, and they already have a lot of autonomy! It is the Caldoches, the Europeans in New Caledonia, who have been discriminated against for years, by not having their vote recognised. Not to mention the interference of the Mafia, China and Azerbaijan in New Caledonia, which completely distorts the situation. There are Azerbaijani flags at demonstrations! And it's also a caricature to think that all Kanaks want independence. I've never seen such a biased programme...
1. New Caledonia was included in the UN decolonisation list in 1946. This was reconfirmed by the UN Decolonisation Committee on 28 October 1987.
The French response on both occasions was to claim it was an integral region of France.
But when it came to the EU, France claimed New Caledonia was NOT an integral region of France. NC does not use the Euro, it uses the Pacific Franc. New Caledonia does NOT vote for MEPs, and is NOT represented in the European Parliament. The Schengen open border agreement does NOT apply to New Caledonia. Kanaks have no rights to work in the EU.
2. The French Socialist Government of Mitterand promised and prepared a bill in April 1985 to move New Caledonia towards independence by 1986 through a referendum. This did not take place.
3. At the 1988 Paris talks the Matignon Accord was reached, providing the broad framework of a ten year transition plan leading to the decolonisation of New Caledonia. This did not take place and let to riots.
5. Between 1990 and 2013, the population of New Caledonia grew from 169,000 to 256,000. During that 23 year period the New Caledonia birthrate dropped from 17.53 per thousand to just 8.72 per thousand, almost exactly half. This means means that most of the 87,000 population increase were external arrivals, mostly from France.
6. By the time of the 1998 electoral embargo the population of NC had risen from 169,000 (1990) to 210,000 (2000). The birthrate on the island had fallen from 17.53 per thousand to 15.25 per thousand. Most of those extra 40,000 arrivals were French voters.
7. The infamous electoral embargo applies to arrivals post 1998. Retuning arrivals are not subject to that rule. If you were in NC pre 1998 you can vote. It only applies if you never set foot in NC before 1998.

France should have been more progressive in establishing a path for true independence and local sovereignty. I believe that it was a huge mistake by the Kanaks to consort with Azerbaijan and other outside countries! Perhaps the U.N. should have been appealed to. In any case, I assess the situation as very grave, from a diplomatic perspective.
The violence has gone on for too long, and all opposing factions are too entrenched. It would definitely require strong international intervention to achieve a permanent settlement. It makes me feel sad to see all of the violence and discord.
