I cannot stop watching this movie. I've watched it nearly everyday since quarantine started. Nothing like a beautiful story, a loving community, and fresh Montana air to get you through being stuck alone in the city for a few months...
I agree. I own this movie...and I've watched it so many times that I can basically speak the lines along with the actors! It never gets old. So beautiful.
I have seen this movie twice now, and I need to watch it again! Watching the trailer had me crying, because of how beautiful it is! To me, THIS is what community living should be, and as a city girl, I don't get that at all. Such a cinematic beauty!
I've been exploring film from 1900 to yesterday, and this is still one of my top 5. Absolutely adore it, and the soundtrack. Please treat yourself, if you haven't yet. You deserve it.
This movie is amazing! It's a fairytale, and a beautiful one. Such a great news knowing that it is finally getting a HD release! Tim DeKay abs in High Def!!
I first watched this more than a month ago after knowing about it for more than a year. My online friends love it and I could never find where to watch it until I found out they'd put it on Netflix a while ago. I cried a solid two or three times the first time I watched it. I've seen it twice so far and it was just as good the second time as it was the first! This film is definitely #1 on my list of favorite queer romance films.
I've seen this movie several times and I will no doubt see it several more times. Every now and then I feel like I need to see "Big Eden" again. It makes me happy and makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I think fairy tales CAN come true.
Oh my goodness, I've only just this evening found this movie. Without question it scores 10/10 Lake McDonald, Glacier Nation Park, Montana Just went to the top of my list for place I want to visit.
I have watched this movie over and over and over I love all the characters the music is fabulous in it I just think people oughta be more like this it's a wonderful movie I love Pike I love Henry all of them Grace and all the guys and gals that are in it just fabulous
i didn't think l would have liked this movie because of how long ago it was made, but after watching it l would have to put it in my top five must watch LGBT movies.
@@FumariVI maybe they meant that old lgbt movies often end with a dead gay person or there is tons of homophobia and i understand if someone doesn't want to watch that
All hopes will turn real if we wait until end, I turned into tears many times , beautifully directed n holy cow , I just can't stop thinking as how much I have overwhelmed with this artistic love story... God bless all
I had a list of movies to look up and watch this evening end had to pick this one because I used to be madly obsessed with Arye Gross's character- Jesse- in the movie House II when I was a kid and forgot all about that! Was my fav movie for a long time (in little kid time) and he was my fav character/movie to play. I had such a crush on him and given the comments below found I needed to watch this now.
I have watched this movie over and over I can't believe I didn't know about it years ago when it was made I find it the most fabulous well-done music is fantastic the actors are fantastic I loved everyone in it even the little seven dwarfs LOL but I'm telling you the Indian Pike was the greatest I just fell in love with him and I just find this movie so so wonderful everything about it I just don't know the words so I don't have the words to say what I love about it I love love love this movie and will also order it to have it in my collection it's just a one-of-a-kind fantastic I'm very glad and happy that you made this movie
among the best LGBT films I've seen, I like the happy endings, but secretly I want henry to be with Dean. And the scenic location of this film is spectacular. The lake, mountains was so beautiful.
+Thomas West Thanks so much. BIG EDEN and more than 150 other excellent LGBT movies are also available via streaming and download at wolfeondemand.com. It is also on DVD and Blu-ray via WolfeVideo.com for fans in North America.
I felt it was worthy of an academy award and Oscar performances. There’s just so many things about it are subtle, even in the film’s made up place in Montana (the whole Earth should be a happy big Eden but it’s not). It conveys a normal way of life in a community I long for but feel it just will never happen, so I found myself crying several times. Granted I watched a film about the first tv televised Nazi war criminal capture and prosecution and another about a young AfricanGerman whom survived the holocaust this week too. It just feels like this country is trying to go that way and it hurts a lot.
I’ve seen this extraordinary film at least sixty times. Jennifer Chaiken the film’s producer told me she thinks I know more about BIG EDEN than she does, and she was there. It has a great script and direction by Thomas Bezucha (THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTOTO PEEL PIE SOCIETY), an incredible set of actors that were perfectly cast, beautiful photography, and a great original score augmented by the most beautiful country western songs ever produced. It should have won 14 Academy Awards and wasn’t nominated for anything. I frankly don’t think many Academy members even saw the film. It’s one of cinema’s great forgotten gems and this from someone who’s seen in the neighborhood of 14 thousand movies. www.ethansfilmreviews.com
Very well said, Ethan. So there IS someone out there who has actually seen it more times than I have! You're right about the beautiful music in the movie. I wasn't familiar with Jim Reeves until I heard the wonderful song "Welcome To My World" in Big Eden. I have always thought that the song was placed at a perfect place in the movie. I also liked the lovely song that Louise Fletcher sang at the funeral.
FumariVI Jennifer Chaiken told me that Thomas Bezucha’s original intent was to create a G rated film that tackled a topic that is still ‘taboo’ in a great deal of the country. Also that he had felt when writing the script, it was as if he didn’t write it. This sounds kind of crazy (like I’m channeling Shirley MacLaine) but it was as if he was being directed by some psychic source to put down those words and ideas. It’s very rare for instance for a film to feature Native American themes when that’s not the central point of the story (though it ends up being a very integral part of the storyline). It’s said to be unrealistic in its approach to creating a utopian society yet tackles the reality of life for far too many people in our world. It’s so subtle at times, yet makes its point like a dagger to the heart. It incorporates old fashioned values while tackling an issue that still causes people to consider suicide to this day. The director has said that if he had to do the ending over again that he’d eliminate the kiss at the end (or at least make it more chaste) but it is, what it is and flew in the face of convention. It should have been released in every theater, in every mall in America (and the World for that matter) but is still a ‘niche’ picture where most of this country is concerned. I first became aware of the film when my next door neighbor, Skip McCraw, was an assistant cameraman and gaffer on the film, so I was looking forward to it a good year before it was ever in theaters. Luckily I lived in Los Angeles so there were plenty of Art house theaters willing to screen the film. Paramount Pictures turned down the offer to distribute the film because it was considered too ‘soft’ and didn’t have enough of an edge. After all there is no sex, no foul language and the majority of the characters are straight in a story that Hollywood couldn’t easily define. This might explain why the majority of films with any character today come out of the ‘independent realm’ and often at great cost to the filmmakers. BIG EDEN required a great deal of planning, was shot mostly on location in Montana, in six weeks and on a 2 million dollar budget, but thank God it was. I told Jennifer Chaiken she’d never know how many suicides were prevented by people viewing this extraordinary film. God bless, Ethan Nielson P.S. I’ve asked WOLFE Films (the owners of the film) and Ms. Chaiken why the soundtrack was never released and was told they simply couldn’t afford to produce one. Between obtaining the rights to all those songs, they didn’t feel there was a market for the CD, which is an extraordinary shame. It’s actually caused me to look up Dwight Yoakim and a host of other artists (including the composer) who contributed to the soundtrack. www.ethansfilmreviews.com
For people who think this is a "gay movie", it isn't. I mean, sure, ...a couple of characters are gay, but the movie is about so much more than that. This is a movie about people, ...about community. I know people like this; people who don't give a crap what your labels are, they just care about you. If you've watched the movie, then you know it predates social media, labels, political divides, agendas, and cell phone addictions. This movie is worthy of you setting your phone down, not picking it up, and not looking at it until the ending credits have finished scrolling on the screen.
Perfect description. Sure, it has gay characters, but the community around them is a beautiful one too. Please make the time to see this one. You won't regret it 💗
I think Dean and Henry have a beautiful friendship. They are very close and obviously have intimacy, but in the end Dean is straight and can’t feel for Henry the way Henry does for him. I think Dean also liked having Henry’s affection, which is why he cries after seeing Henry give a gift to Pike.
