Great to see a video of the theory in action
Thank you, wonderful webinar by Joe, the Wizard of Perfect Puppy Recall! Personally, I do the Sit as well after recall, also because it makes leashing the dog easier, if that is needed. I really liked the voice -change Joe demonstrates: Right after the dog has decided to come back, it goes into a higher-pitched praise-mode. I do that, too, and find it really cheers the dog on, and makes the entire thing more fun for them.
Thanks so much Alexandra! It's great to hear you've found our new video so good!
I definitely need to work more on recall with my 12 week old Lab puppy. He'll come sometimes, and sometimes he just looks at me. I have too many distractions inside in the form of 3 cats. I've been working on it in the back yard. My Longline arrives tomorrow, so I can work on it in other places as well.
This is fantastic! i see the difference with the 2 people. We are going to step up our recall together so veery important in every way. Thank you Will
Got a little 8 week old springer. Your videos are so helpful thank you very much guys
I found fenrir a bit late so the foundation I had to work with from training was a bit shoddy.
My dog has a very high pray drive and on numerous occasions in the past she had pulled off her leash (she's a boerboel, I'm a tiny twig) to run in the woods.
Today she stared at the woods, clearly saw something as indicated by the lifted front paw (pointer behavior).
I called her; she looked at me, then back at the woods and then decided yes she will listen so I was very proud of her 😊
Prey* drive. Unless ur dog is quite religious.
@@t.lledsmar6052 😂 yes, very religious. Thanks though :) I'm not native English so I do mess up some of the words that are very similar.
@@dodopson3211 I was playing, I know what you meant haha
I’m getting a border collie once Ireland comes out of lockdown I understand everything I need to know about the breed and I’m ready for the challenge. I’m using many videos of yours for inspiration and motivation that I can do it and I can accomplish creating the perfect canine companion. I won’t let the dog down
This sounds like you've done a lot of prep work Lee, you've got this!
Arent border collies the smartest out of any dog?
@@Sh3wbs They are, but with that smartness can come problems, they're pretty effective in knowing how to manipulate their owner, if the owner is none the wiser. As quick as they are to pick up commands, they're just as quick to pick up bad habits too.
I really like Joe. Great video. Great tips.
Great content as usual.. Completely new to the dog world and your the Guru I need! Well done mate on the journey so far 👏
Awesome, thank you!
Fab video thank you, Riley is doing well! Good to see actual footage guys 👍🏻
Thanks so much Laura!
QUESTION: how often should I work on recall with my dog? Once per day is enough? Especially that I would be working on other commands. Would it be too overwhelming? Or does it depend on my dog’s learning ability?
Would depend on the breed. Certain breeds are more willing to learn than others, short but sweet sessions are the way to go, a dog will learn better from say 4, 5 minutes lessons, than 1, 20 minute lesson. If you have a dog that's eager to please and learn, then it will be easier for you and the dog.
Start recall on a leash, maybe do that for the first week, until your dog is responding to the recall on leash, then work on the dog being free from the leash in an enclosed space, then gradually work your way up to wider spaces with minimal distractions, soon you will have a dog that you can let be free and come back when needed to.
It's honestly easier than people make it seem. Training a dog is also training yourself, but teach them everything at once and you won't teach them anything at all. Slowly but surely, one command at a time.
EDIT: just noticed your comment is 3 years old. I hope all has worked out well for you :)
Thanks Will. Consistency is key😊
Absolutely!

Great video Joe!
Thanks!
Fantastic video TY ser
Really good done Joe! 👏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks so much!
@Will can you drop me a link to the German Shepard biting vid please? I want to send it to my daughter and I've lost it, I'm dumb with technology lol
If you don't have a garden, which means that you will have to practise recall outside where there are many distractions, I think a long line lead is necessary at least for some time before the dogs masters it
My puppies are home Millie and Mabel 😊 always awesome information
Riley is……STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL❤️🐶!🤙🏼🌺
Love what you do and thanks. We have 12 week old Border Collie/Blue Heeler female. Question: what's with the high voice used for praise? Thanks. Steve in Malo, Washington, USA
What to do if recall fails? I assume we don’t just repeat the come command over and over? We were doing quite well but suddenly my 16 wk old pup has decided that maybe she won’t come every time. Or she will sniff about for awhile and then eventually come. I’m worried about ruining our recall. How do we nip this in the bud or fix it?
Hey Shauna, thanks for watching and reaching out. Try taking a step back and go over the recall training in a location with less distraction and build back up again, you've got this!
@@willathertoncaninetraining Thank you, that was my question as well. Cheers for the helpful tip.
Love all you video feeds... my shollie pup is doing awesome thanks to your help.... just wish your full puppy course could be paid by monthly payments
We have recall with the puppy inside, she's even not too bad on the beach (though could be better) - but she absolutely will not come back to us in the garden; and runs away, even.
Hey will, I’ve been following you on TH-cam for a few years now and was looking for some recommendations on better recall for my 10 month old Caucasian Shepard puppy and was wondering if you could help she’s perfect in training with everything but her recall
Hey I’m hopefully going to be getting a chow chow puppy when I’ve been doing my research they say there not easily trained ect but I also have read that any dog can be trained have you had any experience your self with chows
Can a puppy at that stage become purely food driven? When should you refrain from praising with treats? Maybe praise with treats every other time?? My puppy is 14 weeks and I'm observing that he's almost expecting that treat and I'm wondering if he's getting to be on "the wrong foot". Thank you so much! I've learned SO SO much from watching your videos! 🙏
All well and good but do you do if they don't came when called? Put them back on the long line? It has been my experience that they can be perfect on the long line but once they realize that they are totally free they sometimes decide that what they are currently doing is way more fun then anything they have ever got from you eg chasing a rabbit.
Good stuff Joe and Riley is super cute! I know you've been around for some time know, but now there is a bunch of newer faces as well...Fenrir brand is blowing up!
It's really quite difficult to find a longline slip lead (I did try your site) so I'm going for a slip collar + longline clip on lead
Our 10 week old Golden is called Riley too. 😃
let's pretend that right in the middle of that, she sees a cat and is off and miles away. and you are left feeling like a fail and pup is gone. spend next 2 hours to find her.
Well, if you live your life worrying about every little thing then nothing will get done. It’s all about minimising risks and distractions.
Fantastic video! Could you talk a little bit about what the case would be if your dog is not responding to the recall command. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Erin! We'll see what we can do!!
Do you give a treat every time?
We have a 5month old JRT and he’s absolutely brilliant at picking up all his training.
He learns really quickly and bright as a button.. however this afternoon we felt confident and took his lead off in a massive empty field, he ran for the hills ‘literally’ and refused for the first time ever to come back on recall which he’s usually brilliant at.
Thankfully my husband managed to run and stop him. But he was way too interested in something else to listen.
Would you advise us buying a whistle? As he ran so far away I doubt he heard us 🤔
This is my biggest fear. My heart would have stopped.
QUESTION: Any advice when you're training an outdoor dog? We are planning to add a dog to our homestead so they'll be outside all the time. We will not be bringing them indoors to train. Our yard had distractions like kid toys, frogs, grasshoppers, etc ... Do we just pick the quietest part of the yard and start there or do you have other suggestions?
Why would you have a dog if you’re just keeping it outside?????
Thank you for this awesome video. We just got our cane Corso 4 days ago (she’s 10 weeks 4 days old). We also have a four year old child who is scared of the puppy because she’s super nippy at the moment from the teething. Any suggestions?
Thanks so watching, this is super exciting! We've got a video on our Cane Corso channel looking at how to stop them biting that might be helpful: th-cam.com/video/IGSfIZsAsx8/w-d-xo.html&pbjreload=101. We also have a video on this channel looking at how to stop your dog nipping your children as well: th-cam.com/video/x57TkzDJnr8/w-d-xo.html
Will this work w/ an Akita puppy?
Of course! It might just take a little longer depending on how strong willed your Akita is 😊
my 6 month old Springer spaniel just runs and runs and runs very fast as soon as I let him off the lead. He ignores me until he is basically tired. What can i do??
Thank you!
Started this with Rab the Sprocker pup this morning and he’s responding so well! Thanks Will and Joe 🤘
have a large dog who does not tolerate puppy nipping on back legs or neck and puppy does not respond on no and will respond to older dog biting her on the neck and has to be monitored or puppy will get hurt. HELP!
Any tips for a 9 month old welsh sheepdog who will come back in the house, garden and when I'm on my own. But will no chance In hell come back when I let her off on a field or near a river etc?
my puppy only comes when she knows I have treats, then I cant train her since she'll just follow me while I have treats and won't stay on command. Any tips?
How do you train your dog to break?
What if the dog does not come when called..even inside?
Remember to say break, than reward with treat. So they r breaking to the treat after the sit.
My dog is 2 years of age. She's a mix between a lab and a border collie. She doesn't listen when I try to recall. She's outside dog so I never had that chance of step 1.. help me please. She thinks she's the boss
Hey, thanks for watching! Check out our video looking at this very question:th-cam.com/video/NDjavBGGHw4/w-d-xo.html
I love my pooooopeeee
Joe definitely has a resplendent beard. Is it a job requirement?
Is this possible with a Kangal? We have a 12 week old and I've heard such disheartening things about their stubborn nature!
I don't have a puppy I just came here to hear you say pohpy
EDIT: RESPECTFULLY!
Has will had his puppy yet?
Check out our upload from last week! th-cam.com/video/mkt7vJ_2toY/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugw9vgr6iKKaZKtTscl4AaABAg
A scientific miracle, Will has had a puppy 😲
My puppy sits on it's own, but recall is like, he will rarely come on first try :/
It's better 2 use a long line .
If you call your dog to come to you and then tell him to sit then give him a treat the dog thinks he's getting the treat for sitting and not for coming back to you
Always suspicious of dog trainers who personally own literally the easiest dogs to train.
Who tf are you, where the other guy
Is it necessary to talk in a high pitch like you do? Why don't you use your normal voice?
Because it’s about making it fun and exciting for the pup as the dog gets older then adapt. All the pup wants to do is please you so if you sound super excited they respond better I have found! But You do what works for you and your dog!
@@lauralongton6630
But the dogs desire to please overwhelms a high pitched voice. And if you are going to change your voice later it may confuse the dog in terms of intentions. If I'm in public I'm not going to baby talk my pup like that so it might as well get used to reality. Just my opinion.
I started with a normal voice as it was not natural for me to speak with a high pitch. I really had to train myself for changing my voice. But then when it worked natural it was a big different.
I'm curious about recall and doxons. In the newest video on the fernir doxon channel it was mentioned that they tend to ignore commands when off lead. Does this mean I should take a different approach altogether, like only going off lead in secured spaces, or will a doxon benefit from recall training as well?
