when ever people talking about great horses they always mention arkle ,millhouse ,golden miller, dawn run, kauto star and denman.....yet somewhere along the line lescargot has been forgotten about ...2 gold cups and first second and third in the national IMPRESSIVE!

Red rum was actually giving a dual gold cup winner weight.....great race

What a great horse L’Escargot was. Former Gold Cup winner, real class and when he won this, well in the veteran stage. Tougher than a coffin nail, the snail was anything but slow and he gave his all every race. The first horse to find a weakness in the mighty Red Rum, Teasy Weasy Raymonds Rag Trade would do Red Rum the next year, L’Escargot still had that class about him when he accomplished this win. So good to see him again, an era where the national was still a test not the pantomime of the modern era.

For Red Rum to give so much weight and still make it a race was incredible. Great race.

According to Brian fletcher it was the soft going that beat rummy more than the weight he was giving away to a dual gold Cup winner.

I had a £1 Win on L'Escargot out of my Paper round money at 14/1 - That's when £14 was worth something!!

Interesting editing of the stands to make it look as though there was a decent crowd there that day. There was actually fewer than 10000 people there that day. The then owner of Aintree had massively hiked admission prices for the meeting and the public stayed away in droves. Ladbrokes took over management of the Grand National meeting from the following year.

Only two horses have won the National and the Gold Cup. Golden Miller and L'Escargot. Yet if you ask most Irish people they won't know who you're talking about. I remember this and the pride I felt. We had very few National winners in those years.

Shame on Jeremy Glover jockey of the back peddling veteran Beau Bob after running prominently on the first circuit.

L'Escargot was a much classier horse than Red Rum but Rummy was an Aintree specialist and deserves all the accolades .

People forget that poor Spanish Steps had the misfortune to be around at the same time as these two, beating everything else bar Crisp in '73 in 3 successive Nationals.
