One of the biggest and most annoying chokes for me was Takaaki Nakagami crashing out of the lead in Aragon 2020 after he had worked so hard that whole weekend even getting his only pole position and then he crashed out on the first lap, this was his biggest chance of winning a motogp race and he choked

I think one of the most brutal parts about 2022 for Fabio is the fact that his bike was getting worse relative to Pecco which made it so that he had to push even harder which pushed him into more mistakes, it was a cycle that was prone to making the choke even harder

Yeah, Quartararo is one of the most talented guys on the grid, he really did get screwed over a bit at the end there and it really didn't help. It's not entirely his fault, but the sheer scale of losing a 91 point lead is just insane.

The Choke is the thing that makes motorsport really exciting. You can never know if a certain driver will cross finishline. Through every fight, every corner, you just hope they don't crash. Or sometimes you might hope they crash? And over the last two years, sometimes it was the only thing that would make a MotoGP race exciting.

I'd argue one of the biggest chokes of the modern MotoGP era was Marc Marquez' 2020 Jerez crash. He was coming off of his best season in 2019, had arguably the best bike, and plenty of chances for glory in the coming races. Instead, he pushed too hard trying to break Vinales, dropped to 18th, and got desperate.
Desperate Marc is either glory or gravel, and while his charge back to the front was heroic, it ended in gravel. He broke his arm badly in a self-inflicted crash, and it derailed his career, along with Honda's bike development. He and Honda backslid so much he was crashing out of seventh for half of 2023, pushing too hard on a bike that wouldn't take it.

I’m a mega Vale fan, i respect your point of view but honestly i can’t see a scenario where Rossi could challenge Jorge Marc and Dani in Valencia, i think he did the best possible result. Without the reaction in Malesia he surely had more chance to put pressure on Jorge, but the real “decider” was Marc behaviour in Australia and Valencia, where he only attacked his team mate and never Lorenzo (even if he had the pace to do so). That’s my opinion, nice videos keep it up! 🤙🏼💪🏼

yeah its very crutial context that marquez was very salty for argentina and assen when both races were objectivly his own faults. you could even argue that his games started even in assen they way he just went to blockpass in the last corner. philip island malaysia and valencia are just the icing on the cake. in the last 4 races marquez clearly drove for lorenzo and not for honda and this made this decided the championship.

I don't know if this could be defined as a choke, but this year in Magny-Cours during the SBK race Garrett Gerloff crashed while leading, but there are to be said some things.
He was with intermediate tyres on full wet conditions, so he was unlikely to stay in the lead after, a podium was much more likely.

I don't necessary agree with some of the takes in this video, I do not think there's an outright choke per say in the last few years that you can outright say
Sure you have your Martin Germany final laps from this year or when Nakagami/Acosta blew up inside the first 2 laps of the races they get their poles in, but I do not think each of them are choke. As in those cases there's a good chance they would have scored at least a top 5, given how the races would go (The Suzukis and Morbidelli on Aaragon, The Ducatis in Acosta's race)
To go through some of the season that are more recent I have a few disagreements
First off, the 2 Bagnaias 2021-22 seasons had roughly the same season. Awful first half in which he would then overcome with a really strong 2nd half of the season. The difference in why he didn't win in 2021 was that Fabio had still solid finishes in the latter half, which in 2022 he didn't really do it. That can be traced to Yamaha's slowly losing touch with Ducati in the development war. I do not think Francesco wins 2021 anyway, Fabio probably wins it just by having a really strong first half.
2022 I'd say if quartararo had not got wiped out in Aaragon there might have been a chance he just about saves the season come Valencia. But classifying it as a choke is a handful
2006 is interesting because I'd argue that Hayden had a generational implosion saved because of Rossi's awful start to Valencia. In that season Rossi after Laguna said that he was not going to focus on the title and just race as much as he can. Hayden had a large lead but in the period from Laguna to Estoril, Hayden lost all of it. Not helped by Pedrosa's infamous wipe out. To say Rossi choke it I do not really think is the case as he had ridden himself into an a freaky opportunity that he messed up somewhat. It could be as a choke sure but I think it was down to Hayden having a slump in the latter half of the season
Which, argument can be made if Rossi didn't had mechanical issues in China/France/US he'd already won the title but it is what it is
2015 I'd argue the Wet race in Misano where Rossi didn't take advantage off Lorenzo's DNF. Malaysia is a bit of a meh excuse but I'd argue there are races here and there that Rossi maybe gets a point or two there.
But I think the higher chokejob is possibly 2016 with Yamaha generally speaking. If we count dry races, they would have easily beaten Marquez both Lorenzo and Rossi but they lost the title because they imploded in wet races. Disastrous strategies and it signalled one of the main flaws of the Yamaha in that period.
Also possibly Dovi's 2017 season was underwhelming
An all time OEM implosion of a choke job is still 2020 Yamaha which I think is the biggest out of the last few years. Because they had the biggest oppurtinity to finally get a title with quite literally Morbidelli, Quartararo or even Vinales. Rossi had crashes and covid so no. But they seemingly lost it on the first weekend, when they had the entire engine saga which was later discovered. Got penalized and generally they seemed off pace. Mir/Rins possibly wouldn't have won it if Yamaha did not messed up the Jerez double round in regards of engine allocation.

    • @TheBeehivePaddock
      @TheBeehivePaddock  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I think ultimately the disagreement here comes from how we're defining chokes, I appreciate you taking the time to write all of it out, you make a lot of pretty good points, but I think we just fundamentally disagree on what the definition of a choke should be.

  • @DavidStacey-tx7on

2015 wasnt so much a choke but Floggi cracking under pressure and getting desperate. Jorge started season slow and by summer break Floggi had a solid lead, when they returned Jorge was more consistant in qualifying well and scoring podiums closing the gap. Floggi got desperate and resorted to old pathetic tactics trting to rattle Jorge by getting fanbase and media onto Marc. Rossi didn't choke at Valencia in 2006. 2006 was the year of the Yamaha hypernail which suffered with reliability all season. Rossi didn't get off the line because the bike overheated and started spewing it's coolant out, and that's why he went backwards in the race. The bike also managed to chunk it's front tyre three times that year, it did it so hard at Jerez it smashed the front mudguard off and broke the screen. Maybe you shouldn't guess about these things, especially when there are people who saw that season happen in real time

I just cant agree with 2015, marquez was doing all he could to slow rossi and let lorenzo get away, he did simular in Australia. He was all over Jorge in Valencia and never once tried to pass on purpose. If rossi was in that group we'd have just seen another Malaysia, Lorenzo and Pedrosa ride away and Marquez drops to fight rossi and slow them both down

I was thinking about Rossi recently. (It first came to mind after seeing the EmpLemon video.) You mentioned a few specific ones but I think it's a more general mental block around reaching that 8th premier class title. I was considering how he dominated in GP until he got one championship behind Agostini, then essentially self destructed since. Entering the Premier Class he won 7 titles in his first 9 years, putting him just one behind Ago. In this time he could have easily made it 8 without the 2006 choke you covered. The year after his 7th title he crashed in practice before the 4th race, taking him him out through injury from the next 4 races and completely destroying his hopes of his 8th title that year. The following 3 years he was no where near the title and would only win one race.
In 2014, with 6 races to go in the season and Rossi in 2nd in the championship, Marquez made his first mistake of the year, crashing out of the race. Rossi would take full advantage and win this race. The next race, Marquez made another mistake, dropping down to 13th place. Shortly after this, with and an opportunity to take advantage again, Rossi himself had a massive crash where he was knocked unconscious. He finished 2nd that season.
In 2015 with a dominant bike all he had to do for the elusive 8th title was beat his teammate. As you said, he lost his head in Malaysia, deciding to play games with Marquez rather than chase down 2nd place in the race. Then in Valencia he managed to slice up to 4th place with ease, and then made no further progress which was all that was needed for the title. The following year, 2016, he would come 2nd AGAIN. After that, despite 5 more years in the sport, he would never get close to the title again.
Notable chokes from the following years were a crash on the penultimate corner of the last lap of Le Mans in 2017 when battling for the lead with his teammate, and a bizarre slow speed fall in Malaysia when comfortably leading a race in 2018 with 3 laps to go.
This is a man who dominated the sport to reach 7 titles so quickly, and then clearly had a mental block which stopped him getting his 8th in 12 further attempts.

Honestly, Rossi 2015 doesnt make sense. Lorenzo bested Rossi by almost 20 seconds!
Not to mention Rossi was only 6 seconds behind Lorenzo once he got through the pack for 4th. The only ones that could take away the title from Lorenzo were the Hondas. So to summarize, it wasn't choke. Rossi did the maximum with his pace. Lorenzo was just granite that year.

That wasn’t my point, I’m saying Rossi choked by knocking Marquez off in Malaysia, and could have been involved in the battle in Valencia if he hadn’t done that.
