- The final vehicular chase scene in Mad Max: Fury Road is a masterclass of well directed action, utilising a clear rhythm to keep it easy to follow and entertaining.
Also, this is a good example of how you can actually *see* things in extremely fast-paced action if the film does NOT use stupid shaky cam.
Exactly: even in spite of the quick edits, you can still perceive everything that is going on.
Agreed however shaky cam can be used right like the the Paul Greengrass directed Jason Bourne movies and in Kingsman directed by Matthew Vaughn along with the Russo Brothers direction of Captain America The Winter Soldier and Civil War
Its not like theres no shake, but the difference is this is clearly being filmed at 60 miles an hour, while taken looks like its being filmed during an earth quake.

You know it's great (probably greatest) when-even after watching this movie 10+ times, I still got distracted by the amazing action and didn't hear what the narrator was saying
Somehow "action masterpiece" feels like it's underselling it.
A friend of mine once tried to convince me that _Batman vs Superman_ was a misunderstood masterpiece and that _Mad Max: Fury Road_ was an overrated piece of shit. Needless to say, we're not friends anymore.
I would recommend you watch the Directors Cut of BVS, it's actually pretty good. Has more rhythm. I saw the original and it sucked but it was studio interference

I’m not knowledgeable about films or anything but the cuts in this movie are so good. They feel natural and makes sense when considering the shot before and the shot after, which makes the action very coherent. This film also uses them at good intervals so we see everything clearly in each shot.
Nux went down like a boss. I've got goose bumps everytime I see this scene.

George Miller reached James Cameron levels of skill directing this. When I saw it in theatres I haven't felt this much adrenaline since T2 tanker chase or Aliens final act!

Ironically, if it weren't for Mad Max 2, James Cameron wouldn't have felt inspired to do a lot of the action sequences in Terminator 2, he sites The Road Warrior as a major influence on how he approaches action
The whole movie is full of great scenes with constant tension building just like the bank robbery scene in Heat
This is the best film of the year, easily. I'm super excited for Star Wars, Spectre, and The Good Dinosaur; The Martian, Mission Impossible RN, and especially Sicario were excellent, but these comparisons aren't even close as far as I'm concerned; MMFR is poetry in motion, a true motion picture where every single plot point and character moment is communicated *visually.* MMFR deserves Best Picture before the inevitable sleep-inducing, sitting-in-a-room-talking Oscar bait and indie crap, which are sure to come...

The concept you're talking about here is something storytellers call the plus-minus rule. It is the key to interesting action scenes. The advantage should never entirely be on one side or the other, but rather a tug of war as each side grows more and more desperate or confident.

Took me a few views before it really got to me... but when it did?!?! ohh my... best action movie in MANY years... excellent direction, breathless action, great cast.. and most important.. true to the Mad Max name... 100% approved!!!
No offence to Mr Miller, but after a couple of decades of washed out, desaturated films, I was sooooooo happy to see the brilliant colour scheme in this movie. Literally the first thing I said/whispered when the first image of Max (standing next to his car) came on screen.: "Colour!!!!!"

Rossatron It is really rewarding to have someone who talks about the action genre from an academic standpoint. People like Michael Bay have been the source of much ridicule of this genre, and it isn't fair when there are people like George Miller literally drawing from the classics to improve their films. I'm bummed out that so many fans slammed Furiosa character. I never really considered Mad Max as a main "Hero" protagonist. He feels like a wasteland wonderer, a survivor and a mythological character. The narrator who blows in and out of other people's stories. His past explains his actions and reactions, but aren't central to the exsistance of the tales of the wasteland. Plus the mad max game does him way better justice in that regard.

I bought the full franchise pack in the octane edition.

The way you describe the rhythm in the sequence beginning at 3:00, reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut's G-I axis , but shifts between good fortune and ill fortune are much quicker here.

I still prefer Mad Max 2 over Fury Road. I might even prefer the first Mad Max over Fury Road as well. I think it had the more memorable characters, scenes, and the rugged, visceral, low budget charm. But Mad Max 2 will forever reign supreme for me.
Same here, i still favor the second movie a bit slightly more than the first, but somehow i feel the first movie had a better story progression than the second movie.
Because in the second movie, it focuses just all the time on that oil rig farm.

i think this is the BEST pure action movie since...1994's Speed.
Both Raid movies rely too much on the very well choreographed martial arts fighting scenes...to me, they're more martial arts movies than pure classic action flicks.
Air Force One, as goos as it was..merely a Die Hard knock off..same with Olympus Has Fallen.
The Bourne flicks...those shaky cams really got me SICK and distracted from actually enjoying the movies. i'm fine with Bourne Identity and Legacy, tho.

Fury Road & the original Mad Max are my personal favs in the series. I feel the roadwarrior & beyond thunderdome are a bit cheesy for my tastes.

My only gripe with Mad Max Fury Road was too many guns. Guns in the original trilogy were very sparsely used and even then they were unreliable. They're so common in Fury Road that it's a mystery why anyone would use anything else.
Ultra nitpick. Movie explains this very well and uses it as a plot point even.
"Mad Max: Fury road, released earlier this year, blew everyone away." I agree with you right up to "everyone." but maybe this video can convince me otherwise.
Love the channel even though I didn't like this movie. I couldn't find any character arcs. Sure their lives were in danger but I never felt any reason to care.
I love action movies, but to be honest, I don't understand the love for the movie. Even with the brilliant rhythm of the action that I will concede, it felt no different than a Fast and Furious movie to me. It's a fun really long car chase, but it didn't feel like an actually complete movie in ways that similar balls to the wall action movies like The Raid did.

Hey Ross just saying you might want to start putting spoiler warnings on your vids. I think you have an amazing sense of film and a super keen eye for it, right up there with the most popular critics and buffs. I've just been binging your videos and have kinda notice a trend where you sometimes show clips that may ruin anticipation and surprise for people who haven't seen the movie you're talking about or recommending. No disrespect I think you're amazing, but to the people who haven't seen like mad max for example and stumbled on your video, some of that climatic action scene was spoiled.

This video gives me a new appreciation as to how shit the Michael Bay Transformers movies are. The action sequences in Mad Max vs Transformers are like night vs day. One is exciting and engaging throughout, while the other is dull, confusing and repetitive.

I still feel Road Warrior is the superior film as the action is just as exciting and well coordinated and the main hero is without a doubt Max himself and not that Furiosa chick. I felt it was a big misstep making her the co main character so to speak. I also fucking hate Charlise Theron and will most likely give Atomic Blonde a pass.

Should've been called "Furiosa: Max Road". The story was dire for me, but I know that's probably a minority standpoint.
What story and Mr hardy never got to act. Maybe its me but i felt like i had seen it all before

Apart from the first Mad Max, all of them star a protagonist character other than himself. As a a series, he is the main character because we see how he started as a cop and then how he developed into a man of myth and legend in the increasingly wild wilderness.
Hardy had about as many lines as Mel Gibson. The problem was that he sounds like Arnold Swartzinegger and batman had a mutant child whenever he opens his yapper.
Mel managed to convince the audience that he was a cold machine of vengence and death, even before he says his first lines.
Max isnt Max because he says he is. He's Max because he shows you from beginning to end that he gives no fucks about who or what you are, he has his business, and you'd better hope your not in his way.
Punching a snake at the begining of road warrior also helped.

I don't think Fury Road was all that great. Then again, it's been a long time since I gave a film anything higher than a 7/10.
This films effects were amazing but the story and characters were very lacking.Personally i would only recommend this movie for the action eye candy that is top notch probably the movie with the best effects in 2016 but if your going in expecting a good story with good character development you will be dissapointed.

Norcal Haunt Probably the best and most honest review i seen of this movie is by the youtuber E;R suggest you watch it though he can be quite vulgar at times his brutal honesty is the main reason i watch him.
But there is a very good story (though the plot is fairly simple in his structure) and great character development, you just have to keep track of all the detail in the movie...
The point of the movie is to immerge the viewer in the univers to make it feel real (and also to do an insanely good action chase), that's why the exposition is keep to a bare minimum, (you could say none existent xD), because nobody do exposition in real life, But their are plenty of deep message, in the movie, or even back story, Character growth but you have to pay attention to it.
I would go as far as to say that it is one of the most satisfying movie to explore deeply in recent year, While most of the time, you have movie that appear complex on the surface and then break completly when you start digging into them, here you have a movie that appear quite simple the first time but gain in complexity and in deepth the more you look into it.
nono547 Ok first let's begin with the so called immersive universe so this is a world were there is bleary any water but yet there is a shit ton of gasoline and working cars, trucks and even moster trucks which exist by randomness i guess and everyone on this world is a piece of shit that only cares about self preservation(except when the plots demands a character not to) since the world is pretty much shit i don't see how that is an immersive and complex world is just an apocalyptic setting but the place were the story takes place is not as important as the action, story and characters so next we go with story. Ok the story is pretty straight forward big asshole controls water and has harem of pretty ladies as well as capturing max for reasons and not killing him and just keeping him prisoner for reasons, next Furiosa is crazy lady that doesn't like Joe and thinks he is a piece of shit but seems to only care about the girls and well fuck everyone else under Joe's wrath right?So Furiosa runs away with water truck and girls so he can trade the water for gas with some mountain bicker dudes and she can go to this magical fairy land that she has no idea if is real or not.Joe finds out and through his autism makes every abled body man on his army to go get the breeders from his harem leaving the city unprotected and one of Joe's guys takes Max along so he can be war boys blood bag because i get plot needs to find a way to bring max into all this shit and don't say is to use Max as a blood bag because he needs him to stay alive since later on we see him do fine without Max's blood.So Joe's guys meet up with Furiosa and the water truck and after a badass chase scene plot war guy (to lazy to even remember his name) crash coincidentally close enough to Furiosa's truck and he just walks up to them and beats the crap out of them getting away with the truck and then i don't remember if the truck breaks down or he just stops and allows a bunch of crazy bitches into the car that want to kill him, so much for surviving not to mention those btiches are the main reason joe is after him so he could have been better off without them and with enough water to trade for a ton of gas or to last him a long ass time but no. Warboy befriends one of the breeder ladies and wants to tap.So Furiosa reunites with the crazy dried up vagina ladies which if you read more into it are just as bad as Joe but i guess they only treat men and boys like shit so that's ok i guess.And turns out that the paradise place really did exist but the crazy old ladies fucked it up over some time and now the place is a shithole so they all band together and decide to go back to the city since is unprotected and badass chase scene were joe is killed, plot war boy goes Allah Akbar and blocks the other guys leaving them to die and the crazy ladies and max make it back and pretty much take over everything distablize the city and waste all the water ensuring everyone will die and the place will be just as shitty as the paradise became.And now we come to the characters which are all shit with the exception of plot war boy which is a bit likable, max and furiosa which are both assholes but we get the most development from them.All the characters are shallow crazy assholes and some of them are just working with the others because their stuck with each other and apart of the good rhythm the movie has the characters have no development and are just as much of a shitty group of people as they were at the beginning.So apart of the special effects, action scenes and phase what else is there to like about this movie? is like i said just a bunch of eye candy.
Honestly, Nux was the best character in the film I think. He was the one that grew the most and had a solid character arc. When he dies I really felt something in my chest hehe. I think the movie deserves a good 8.0 or even 8.5 out of 10. The world building, music, stunt work, and camera work were top notch. My only negative, like you said has to be the lack of character depth in most of the cast. Oh, and the color grading was absolutely beautiful to behold.
I have to say that I disagree with practically everything Rossatron has said here. First, the original Mad Max was way better than this supposed 'Masterclass', and second, the relentless 'crisis-save' combination, again and again and again, doesn't have a charging effect as Rossatron claims, but rather a nullifying, desensitizing effect. Nothing is a surprise, because as Rossatron said, all 250 of the crises offered in the preceding 20 minutes were averted. Every new one becomes that bit more of a ho-hum joke, and there's nothing really at stake for any of the protagonists not to mention the film viewer. That's precisely why the Star Wars prequels sucked so bad. There was barely any character development or story. Just ad-nauseam and ultimately forgettable crisis-save combinations.

1. It was well shot so you understood exactly what was happening despite the constant movement, quick edits, and the fact that usually there were multiple fights going on at one time.
2. Mad Max is a long-standing popular film saga that's been going for years.
3. People cared about the characters. Characters all had arcs and almost all of them were wrapped up at the end. Some people empathised with Max and his need to get away; some with the wives and their desire to not be 'property'; some with the grim determination of Furiosa. The villains were suitably despicable. All the characters were very specific in design and stood out.
4. The film immersed you into the culture so you understood the religion and the different tribes without the film feeling the need to sit the audience down and have a lengthy chat about it. It didn't patronise it's audience, it knew people would understand. People who had never seen Mad Max films before, or those who didn't like the film, still all understood the culture and the language of the War Boys etc. Most films cannot, or will not, do that.
There's more but I'll leave it there. You won't agree with everything, or anything, I've said, but don't pretend like you don't understand why people like it. I get why people don't, even if I don't agree.

Like he established in his video on Leon, action does not matter, if you do not care for the characters, there are no character building and no characters in the movie, this no basis to make any action in the movie have any meaning or quality what so ever...
Carewolf then it's clearly not the movie for you. Fury Road had a perfect subtlety to take character and world building. The devil's in the details and that's all the movie needed.

I agree. None of the Main characters, except maybe the warboy were interesting enough to make me care about that final sequence.
They didn't drive the plot(car pun) they just rode along with it(another car pun).
If the good guys were caught, theyd go back to the bad guy's evil lair and be well fed and treated nicely. That doesnt make me want them to escape into a barren wasteland, it makes me wonder why theyre the ones complaining when there is a whole valley of sick and dying people who were perfectly content with their lives right next to their home!
In earlier films they kept me engaged with the good guys, because they had actual stakes in the matter, it truly was a fight for surival or revenge in Max's case. If the bad guys stole the gas, the good guys would all be crucified and set on fire. That is a reasonable thing to want to escape from. Why not just make a movie about that.
Survival, not escaping from a pimp who happens to feed you well, and treat you niceley(aside from the baby making stuff, thats pretty messed up, but in the context of an appocolypse where it's death or have babies...)

Furiosa is the best. My dad is a frigging republican and saw the original films when they were in theaters, and he liked this one way more than the originals. So yeah.
The original Mad Max treads so much water in between its opening and climactic chases that it wasn't until I saw Mad Max 2 that I saw why people liked the franchise so much. Interesting that one of the main criticisms of this movie is that Max isn't the central character given Max spends all 3 sequels caught up in shit that he doesn't want to be a part of while other people's stories are front and centre. Yet that doesn't seem to matter for Mad Max 2 for some reason?

Leon the professional is a good action movie with good characters and a good History along with some great special effects. Madmax is a movie with amazing special effects but shit story and shit characters.Your movie can have as much action as possible but if the story is crap and you could give less shits about the characters the movie is a failure.
I gave more shit about the characters in this film than any other action movie from this decade. Mad Max was powerful stuff. Your definition of a good story is fundamentally flawed since you don't know what "story" means in the first place. You mean the plot was basic, which is true, but it fit well into the film. Leon the professional has also a very standard plot. Its the execution that matters. Both films are successful in their own right.
