[Video] Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen [totp] (Wiggy St Helens UK 2008) All you Status Quo fans, watch out for your very own John 'Rhino' Edwards :)
THis is one of those songs that you have heard 1000s of times and know inside out. Then it will appear on tv or radio out of nowhere and remind you of its genius.
Can’t believe this will be 40 years old this year! Was 15 in ‘82. Bopping to this in nearly every school disco. “Pretty red dress…my thoughts I confess…are just dirty”. Miss the 80’s vibe. Was such a great time.
Poor old Johnny Ray Sounded sad upon the radio He moved a million hearts in mono Our mothers cried and sang along and who'd blame them Now you're grown, so grown, now I must say more than ever Go toora loora toora loo rye aye And we can sing just like our fathers Come on Eileen, well I swear (what he means) At this moment, you mean everything With you in that dress my thoughts I confess Verge on dirty Ah come on Eileen These people round here wear beaten down eyes Sunk in smoke dried faces They're so resigned to what their fate is But not us, no not us We are far too young and clever Eileen I'll sing this tune forever Come on Eileen well I swear (what he means) Ah come on, let's take off everything That pretty red dress Eileen (tell him yes) Ah come on Eileen
See this for what it is.... simply one of the greatest pop songs ever written. A masterpiece of any time from a revered (by those who know a bit) genius. A national treasure.
Oh how the "come on Eileen or come on anybody, I don't mind" could be taken in the wrong light but probably even more so today 🤣 John, you were a TOTP ledg'.
To all you Memphis Tigers fans and Carolina Panthers fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when DeAngelo Williams came into the world (April 25, 1983). Coincidentally, my cousin and her husband welcomed their second child, a son, into the world on the very same day. Small world, isn't it?
Jack FM smack me in the head and brought me here. Knew this song back in those wonderful days. I named my daughter Aline after a French song as opposed to Eileen.
Totally agree. After listening several so called talented singers today who composed and sang thier own songs, I went nah..............is that called talented ?
The drummer (in the official street version) is in some shots but not other shots because he was fired in the middle of making the video. The name of the 1950's heartthrob is "Johnnie Ray" in most shots but is written "Johnny Ray" in the photo album. They looked good here on this show.
Id just like to say that at this point in time, artists were told to lip sinc or pack up and leave in the TTP situation. Check out Nirvanas Smells like tee spirit on TOTP.
I can see why you might think so in the USA but they had another no 1 in the UK a couple of years before this "Geno" v=ZnoUlZnwYy4 a bit similar to eileen but in brass, they also had two other top ten and another 2 top 20 hits, so I don't think you can call them a one hit wonder band!
Yes. You use them for choirs, orchestras, and studio work, but not for vocalists in a rock band. Regardless, at 0:27, you can see that there's no overhead microphone. They almost always lip synch on these dance TV shows. It sounds better.
Such a shame they never actually let the bands perform live & loud in these shows for the folks at home & in the crowd to enjoy all the more! They'd be shouting over the pre-recordings, with basically just the drummer, violin and maybe some lyrics heard over the songs. Would've been great to be in the crowd regardless.
@Hunkola Yep - that was definitely lip synching - sounds EXACTLY the same as the recorded version - I came to the comments to see if anyone else had noticed!
i have to like this... i was at TOTP when it was being sung but i didn't see me... not in this clip anyway. also in the same week Donna Summer was in the chart, little scottish woman... what's her name.
@Hunkola Yep - that was definitely lip synching - sounds EXACTLY the same as the recorded version - I came to the comments to see if anyone else had noticed! Bloody great song though - and good to see the band putting on a good show anyway :)

and never tire of it

I was 13 in 1982, those were the days.
Every time I hear this song I feel like I'm back in the 80' s
Love it, absolutely fantastic even after all this time it is still number one for me
Best banjo player ever, and i mean that. I dont know any other song that i like that has a freaken banjo in it.
How could you not move to this great song I’m 72 and still love it 😍
Why not? Good music is for ever - Like classic music -Motzart
This is real music, because people actually play, and sing it. I love it!
When this song comes on the radio when I'm driving I can't help to sing along to it reguardless of who's watching! LOVE THIS SONG!

i could watch this over and over happy memories and happy days i love roland with his own style
Why can't it be the 80s forever?!
I was in my early twenties then. Don't know where the last forty years went!
Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried and sang along and who'd blame them
Now you're grown, so grown, now I must say more than ever
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers
Come on Eileen, well I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen
These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us
We are far too young and clever
Eileen I'll sing this tune forever
Come on Eileen well I swear (what he means)
Ah come on, let's take off everything
That pretty red dress Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on Eileen
Pete Kelly I didn't write it.
I guess knowing the correct lyrics makes me mental and you a dolt?
Pete Kelly Well good, I am sure the feeling would be completely mutual if I knew enough about you to actually give one or two rat's asses. Take care.
sparkytdg sparkle sparkle twinkle twinkle. This is for mr Pete.
tuulikki sillanpää Came all the way back for that huh?
Petty should have been your "new" name.
Actually, "Petty Bitch".
Probably taken by "Ms. Pete".

Great atmosphere and timeless song
absolute classic rock, and priceless party music.

So funny to see John Rhino Edwards of Status Quo playing basd in the background!!😊
Kevin Rowland is, in his own words "Irish and very proud of it!"
And really cute
All 53 members of the band would like to thank you for watching this video !!
that banjo player is awesome! reminds me of the sax player in Doing the Strand by Roxy music! Nothing like putting everything you got into playing!
4 times the energy of any american show!!
Oh how the "come on Eileen or come on anybody, I don't mind" could be taken in the wrong light but probably even more so today 🤣
John, you were a TOTP ledg'.
No pasa de moda !!!!!!!!!!😍

LOVE THE 80S WISH I COULD GO BACK
This is amazing on record
Ever since I heard this song I have always wanted to meet someone called Eileen!
Just so you can sing that song right ?
It's the Irish version of Helen so if you know an Ellen, Lena, or Helena, you have achieved your wish.
A good song for St. Patrick's Day, and I am not Irish.
It will get a bit of airplay in pubs around the world next weekend . . . no doubt about it
still loving it October 2017
Jack FM smack me in the head and brought me here. Knew this song back in those wonderful days. I named my daughter Aline after a French song as opposed to Eileen.

Totally agree. After listening several so called talented singers today who composed and sang thier own songs, I went nah..............is that called talented ?

the whole song is mimed anyways, thats how totp performances went
Leeds festival brought me back here. Fucking anthem.
Thank you God for making me a teenager in the 80's after that music went downhill
Such a shame they never actually let the bands perform live & loud in these shows for the folks at home & in the crowd to enjoy all the more! They'd be shouting over the pre-recordings, with basically just the drummer, violin and maybe some lyrics heard over the songs. Would've been great to be in the crowd regardless.
so this is when music artists sounded just as good live as in their recordings and didn't need auto-tune
Fe best
I think the fact he doesn't have a microphone is a bit of a giveaway haha
grat song:-)
oh yeah
I think it was a great look.
@Shaysailor Too True!
come on the eightys
Totally amazing song! But never knew if they were baggies, Bfc or villians?
Love that lol, c*m on Eileen or anyone I don’t really mind 🤣🤣
2:11 'Nooooo, THE BALLOOON :(!!'
The lead singer for this group was so strange but it was a great song.
Eileen goodnihght !
@Hunkola Yep - that was definitely lip synching - sounds EXACTLY the same as the recorded version - I came to the comments to see if anyone else had noticed!
overhead mics are really only for speaking situations , would be able to here all the crowd and stuff if he used that
Check out the episode of That 80's Show called "Cory's Remix". This song is immortalized in it! LOL
i have to like this... i was at TOTP when it was being sung but i didn't see me... not in this clip anyway. also in the same week Donna Summer was in the chart, little scottish woman... what's her name.
I haven't ever seen or heard a video of the original, when first done in a studio. Anybody????
*I still cannot understand the words he is singing but it’s a great tune regardless*
@Hunkola Yep - that was definitely lip synching - sounds EXACTLY the same as the recorded version - I came to the comments to see if anyone else had noticed!
Bloody great song though - and good to see the band putting on a good show anyway :)
yeah i know that, was a reply to sum1 who said he could have been using over head mics,
