Hiking Derryclare Mountain - Twelve Bens, Connemara

  • A hike up Derryclare in the Twelve Bens in Connemara with clear views of the entire mountain range. I started this walk on a track off the R344 between Lough Inagh and Derryclare Lough. There is a track alongside the shore of the Derryclare Lough which eventually reaches open mountainside to commence your climb up Derryclare. As you begin the climb - the Maumturks, Lough Inagh and Derryclare Lough provide an impressive view behind you. This route was quite wet and slippy on the lower part of the mountain and the higher I went the ridges and summits of the other peaks of the Twelve Bens/Pins came into view. The final ascent is steep and a bit of a scramble but well worth the effort. I decided to do a looped walk and came down the ridge next to Binn an Doirín keeping the stream to my right hand side. I eventually (after a battle through a forest) linked up with the forest track to return me to where my car was parked.

    Ha ha, 'can't be bothered.' I could understand why completely Miriam - it was simply a divine day one which beckoned you to take it in. Super on top - them mountains are so impressive. Derryclare at 677 meters is exactly the same as our Hay Bluff but it just looks more dramatic it not being whale back. Well, I was going to say that. You got a workout in the end anyway. Good going. All the best over there. Mark

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure Mark, it seemed bonkers to keep pushing to do something when I could just go at a slower pace. A spectacular place to visit - very dramatic peaks, I love that terrain. Not a spot to pitch a tent though - I plan to do the horseshoe loop that I showed in the video sometime and had thought I might bring a 1 person tent but having been up there this time I wouldn’t fancy my chances of being able to pitch (unless I bivy)…it’s known to be one of the best walks in the country to do the entire loop, so hopefully I’ll do it this Summer when the days are plenty long to make it around the whole way 😊 But again maybe that’s all a bit too much like hard work…I’ll see!! Anyway - thanks so much for watching the video and your message, always nice to hear from you 👍

      Hi Jennifer - what a lovely message to wake up to! Delighted you enjoyed this video all the way over in Washington 😊 The Twelve Bens mountain range were lovely to hike and I plan to get back to do that horseshoe loop again for sure! I’ll need more daylight hours to complete the entire loop so I’ll have to wait another few months. I realised it’s not a place for a tent so it’ll be a day hike to complete it. Great to visit and fly the drone in such pleasant conditions, a hike I won’t forget especially having a little video to spark the memory! Stunning scenery, the harsh rock formations are quite unusually bare I think, that sense is really only captured by the drone. Worth every gram in the back pack. That video made for a lovely morning coffee here thank you.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Robin! You brought me back to a great weekend...I did that trip on a Friday after a few weeks of rain and windy weather. I did a round trip driving from Dublin on the same day. I arrived home, slept and then got up the next day and headed off to do the Waterford Greenway cycle. A great weekend - but lesson learned, filming two trips like that on the trot wasn't much fun. It became rather effortful to use the camera at times on my Waterford trip. A trip where the camera took away from the pleasure of the moment at times, yet having the record as a memory is wonderful to have! 🙃 The drone was great to have when climbing Derryclare for sure...amazing landscape!!

    • @VISTATREKKER
      @VISTATREKKER ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MiriamKennedy it cuts both ways for the videos creator I suppose. I think you describe an approach on the line that is crossed when a hobby becomes a job - at which point one will inevitably take from the other.
      I think the strength of TH-cam at my level at least is that you can sit back behind that line and still contribute to valuable things or things you believe in while holding your position at the point where motivation arises more from synergy than strain.
      I can see it being an easy line to cross.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว

      The motivation was originally from a playful place but it changed as time wore on - I don’t seem to enjoy recording longer trips as much, I get bored with the process and the camera becomes a nuisance rather than a play thing. Yet I enjoy having the memory of it. It’s funny when I see positive comments on the Waterford video as my memory is that my heart just wasn’t in it with the camera at times 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @VISTATREKKER
      @VISTATREKKER ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MiriamKennedy I think it takes time to process a trip and know what the story it has brought about really is. Those ideas that ping in your head on a walk to work are often well after the trip itself. Probably trying to translate the experience to film live or in a compressed time period is relatively hard or intense. I’ve never achieved it anyway. Maybe the answer in some part is to capture film and edit it at a time apart so that one does not strain the other. Then the weekend when you don’t get away becomes the one where you relive a recorded trip and can breath life into it in the editing process. That’s just the way it comes about for me due to the chaos of young family life, I have only produced a tiny fraction of your content but I wonder if that is an Avenue I have stumbled into by default that is useful on some level. Particularly when camping with kids I have to try very hard not to spend the time staring at my gadgets. Failing at this (staring at gadgets too much) at some level is of course inevitable but I still try hard to limit the failing by reducing my engagement with the camera and that’s brought about by a ‘capture now fix later mind set’. I hope I’m not dishing out advice here, that’s not appropriate or useful but there are as many ways up a mountain as there are down it and they all get where they go. It would be a shame if you stopped climbing this particular digital mountain.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that’s a good idea - the energy/momentum of the whole thing for me is all very quick and I’ve thrived in that. I don’t have kids so I come back and I immediately am brought into the next phase of the process..it has its losses but I also thrive on running with that energy straight away. I’m in the door and the excitement of editing begins and is usually done in one sweep (meaning a very late night in most cases). Not sure I’d have the patience or desire to hold off - I use the story that is being composed as I go and then string it together. Your approach is different and might be of value for me but will be so different from my natural inclination. Maybe sometime I’ll try it but it would be not my natural instinctual way and as such would be more processed - in fairness using or speaking to a camera is not natural to me anyway. I’m heading to NZ in 8 weeks time for 3 weeks and if I bring the camera on any hikes I certainly won’t be be able to edit on the go. I’ll be touring with someone so filming doesn’t really feel appropriate as it’s not his thing. How about this for a story - met someone through TH-cam and I’m going over to the other side of the world to meet them 😂 He would so not want to participate with that story being shared on TH-cam, I don’t think I’d have the courage anyway!! 😂😂

My God it was tough - the Supermacs burger and chips eased the pain, ahhhh I loved it all (well not quite the forest assault course). Thanks for watching!! 😉

    Wow Miriam, that place is stunning. Another one for my list. You also did Sheefry hill once which I need to do also. Brilliuant choice of music. Very relaxing video. Great drone footage also. What a day for it. Its not often we get days like that so yes, staying on top and just being. Absolute heaven. Sure getting lost is all part of the fun. I suppose only fun if you found your way back. Well done. Another cracking video.

      Thanks very much Martin! A great mountain range to visit - it was on my list for quite a while but eventually got there! I first spotted them from the Sheeffry’s and then got closer when I went to the Maumturks with Lough Inagh separating us. Very similar terrain to the Maumturks - a challenging walk, but with weather like this it makes it very worthwhile! It’s a strange one when you know where you are but are held back to get to where you want to get to!! Patience helped and stubbornness probably kept me longer in the woods as turning back was always an option! Lesson learned again….🙃

    Great day to be out and that looked an exciting climb, picking your way to the summit of Derryclare. The drone footage really showcased the whole area, giving stunning views all around and despite the bright sunny weather, you could see how cold it really was with the frozen tarn. Hardly a breath of wind on the summit and those views looked gorgeous and no wonder you sat and drank 3 cups of tea, I would have done exactly the same! The Glencoagham Horseshoe did look amazing and something I would love to do, especially on a clear day like that. Hopefully that none excising path back did not spoil things too much for you, cheers Alan

      Hi Alan! Great to hear from you - yes an amazing spot...I think you mentioned that you have friends living in Galway, well I hope you make it over to do the Glencoagham Horseshoe at some stage 🤞 I hope to do it this Summer when we have longer days - I can imagine it being quite tough to take in the entire loop but I'd definitely like to try it. Having the right conditions would make it all the better of course like you said. Such great views - I drove over 3 hours to get there and left home at 4:45am and it was so worth it!! The forest adventure didn't spoil things at all - reminded me who is really the boss when out in nature though! I should have just left the woods rather than kept battling the terrain as I was...ah well 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for watching 👍

    Brilliant Miriam, envoked some memories for me that one! I hiked up Binn Chorr 20 years ago, unfortunately back then the cloud was like pea soup so it was great to see your awesome drone footage and the scenery I could have seen :-) That looked like one of those days that you just hope would never end and you want to put the walk back down again off as long as possible! Love the drone shot climbing up the side of Derryclare, really showed the scale of the mountain and glad you made back in one piece after fighting your way through the jungle :-)

I’m sure those mountains haven’t changed too much in 20 years although I appreciate the vistas open up when the cloud clears, I’ll be back again for more!! I read that the descent of Bencorr is tough and as I was sitting on Derryclare with another cuppa, I decided to leave it - another time when we’ve longer days maybe! Thanks for watching Gary and lovely to get your message 😊

    Hi Miriam, absolutely great video. You have captured and highlighted this stunning location beautifully. The shots you set up really show me the thought and effort that you have made to do this. I know you love the walk past the camera ones too, where you then have to go back and collect it afterwards.. Your drone shots keep getting better and better and I personally love to see great drone footage and here on your channel is the place.. So very well done once again. Super impressed... ATB Tom

      Ah cheers Tom - that’s very nice of you! The conditions were great to play with the drone to capture some of the views - I always feel it’s a successful trip when the drone is coming home with me…it feels like I’m chancing my luck every time I throw it out! That terrain is just magical to walk in and to play in, I really enjoyed it. By the way - I got the idea of the shot of me launching the drone from one of your recent videos, I’d never seen it done before!, so thanks for that 😉

    Another wonderfully engaging video, Miriam. The footage clarity and definition is just amazing, and with light that good (I would guess a N or NW airflow ?) and a landscape like the Twelve Bens ,it's a perfect combo. I think I would have had a leisurely tea break too for sure :). I have been in these mountains three or four times over the years on different trips, and definitely plan more, maybe later this year depending on what the world looks like etc. In fact way back, over 20 years ago, Derryclare was my first hill in the range. I took my girlfriend at the time (who had climbed some pretty scary Munros here in Scotland, whereas I was a novice) up Derryclare, then along to Ben Corr and then descended the E side of Ben Corr Beg. Unfortunately the descent scared the bejasus out of her and that was the end of our joint hill climbing ventures ! I thought it was okay, but maybe ignorance is bliss and I didn't think too much about what might have happened. When I looked back, I think it was a bit more precarious than I had reckoned on, but short of traversing the whole ridge again, it was the only option I could see. Oh dear. With a lot more hill climbing experience - and a few years on the body and the clock- I am sure I would be more cautious, but such is life. Anyway, getting back on the forestry trail as far as I recall was fairly straightforward as there was a track than ran from the north edge of the forestry quite close to our exit point from the mountain. Certainly I don't think we encountered the sort of obstacle course you seem to have hit there ! As I say, it was decades ago, so I can't be sure. Thank you again for your inspiring and cheerful videos. Best wishes from Scotland.

      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jim! This was first visit to the Twelve Bens having seen them from a couple of my visits to the West over the last year. I was watching the weather for what seemed like ages to try get conditions that would allow me take the drone out to play. I've no idea about the direction of airflow - all I was watching for was hopefully a day with very little wind, it eventually arrived and the forecast was accurate! I read that the descent of Bencorr was tough and as I sat there sipping my tea I just didn't feel in the mood to take on the challenge - I was perfectly fine with my decision but then I had my little challenge further down...I should have stayed out of the forest when I reached its edge, I also should have possibly listened to the voice that that was telling me to turn back, but some stubborn part of me was out to the fore. Maybe next time I might be more inclined to listen to that conservative voice! Good to hear about your experience with it in the past - it's certainly a dramatic range and even as the mountains were coming into view as I was driving that morning I could feel a little knot of anxiety hoping that I would be safe. If world events allow it - I hope you get back there this year, I certainly hope to too! Lovely to hear from you and thanks for your message!! 😊

    Another beautiful video Miriam! Hopefully I'll be taking the vintage Dawes to Connemara, Galway and Co. Mayo in mid May...looking forward to it immensely, but I won't be taking the old girl up any places like that! 😂 It certainly looks a lot quieter in the Irish mountains than the Lake District here! I can't imagine walking the Fairfield or Kentmere horseshoe's and not seeing anybody! We may not get the weather in these islands eh, and we don't have huge mountains, deep canyons and turquoise coloured rivers, but when the sun shines their pastoral, gentle beauty is hard to beat(imo). Take care.. 🙂 G

      Absolutely Graeme - you’re right, the weather adds so much to our wonderful nature places, however even with the wind and rain I still enjoy these places, not so good with a camera or drone though!! You’ll love Mayo and Connemara, such wonderful spots…dragging the Dawes up the Twelve Bens would be a definite heartbreaker!! The crowds are certainly present in many of our beautiful spots but you’re right I rarely meet anyone on my little trips. This one was done on a Friday which is definitely quieter than the weekend. Because it was the first good weather in so long I expected to see more people though. Thanks for watching it - you’ll love Connemara when you get here!! 😊

    Hi Miriam. Another great video. You had a great day for it. As someone who's been up on both the Maamturks and the 12 Bens, do you have a favourite? Do you think that one range has harder terrain than the other? Better views (that's probably a tough question!!) ?
    I have been on the Maamturks ridgeline but never on the 12 Bens, and I found the Maamturk terrain very tough and stony, with some really tough, knee jarring descents. The views over to the 12 Bens and Lough Inagh were ample motivation to keep going though!!
    Respect to anyone who has completed the Maamturks Challenge Walk.
    Regards, Wadirunner.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wadirunner - I only did one summit in the 12 Bens but walked more of the Maumturks range. With my limited exposure I would say they are very similar, those frequent ascents and descents seem to be on both ranges. I couldn’t say I prefer one over the other - I feel I’d like to explore both of them more though. The views are spectacular from both, I had a clearer day when in the 12 Bens so that influences the scale of what I could see. I think they’re both tough! Certainly on my two visits I was very aware that if I fell and banged my head I was a goner. That terrain is very unforgiving and causes me to be a bit more aware and cautious when walking solo. They’re a challenge - especially when I’m probably more used to boggy terrain of Wicklow, but for all that is tough about them both, the same things cause me to love them more! They’re so great! I don’t feel I’m answering your questions properly - I need to explore them both more to be better able to answer with an assured opinion unfortunately 🙃 Absolutely - respect to anyone who completes the Maumturk Challenge and to completing the Glencoaghan Horseshoe! Thanks for watching the video, lovely to hear you enjoyed it 🤗

    I have noticed that all your videos have superb quality, did you produce them in 4K by any chance? Derryclare 667m that is 2.6 times higher than Ditchling Beacon (254m) the highest in East Sussex. The drone shots are brilliant and add so much scope to an already excellent video. Good job Miriam.

      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ODOAB - yes that’s right, the footage is 4K from a GoPro Hero8 and a DJI Mini2 drone. The drone really helps the footage hugely - just gives things some perspective and it’s fun (and nerve wracking) to fly also! Yeah Derryclare is a steep and a rough climb in spots and we’d certainly have been struggling hauling the Bromptons up there 😎 Thanks for watching - I don’t think the cycling crew generally have any interest in the hiking videos so it’s nice to hear you enjoyed it!!

      Ah that’s lovely to hear!! Delighted you enjoyed it, it’s always a bit weird to take the risk and create something and post it, lovely to get positive feedback then 🤗 The foot was doing very well but this particular walk seemed to probably stretch me too far and it was very achey that night but it seems to have bounced back again and I’ve stayed off it for the last few days. I did a trip with the Brompton the following day and brought the drone, but the bike puts no pressure on my foot! I’ll hopefully put that video together in the next week or two - no idea what that footage will be like! So overall I think it’s ok but I need to be careful and know my limits although I need to live too!! I went to see another physician about it and I got the same message - just keep doing what I’m doing and it takes time to heal. If it’s not holding me back I’m fine with it. Thanks for asking!! • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kristina - apologies, I normally include a map of my route but because I ended up cutting through the woods (which wasn’t a way I’d recommend) on my way down I decided not to include it. I parked in a small space for cars on the R344, just over 2km from a turn off the N59. The small car parking space gives access to the Derryclare Nature Reserve, there is only space for a few cars. The grid coordinates are L846 499 if you are familiar with reading ordinance survey maps. If you continue on the R344 from the car parking area you will reach Lough Inagh in about 500m on your left hand side. If you go as far as Lough Inagh just go back and you’ll spot the car parking spaces! The gate that is shown at the start of this video is visible from the road and where you’ll park. Hopefully that helps 🤞

      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jonny - lucky you to be heading up Derryclare! I've been up Derryclare twice - the first time using the route I took in this video (I didn't upload a map due to my poor route through the forest on the descent) and the second time was as part of the Glencoaghan Horseshoe. Both routes were different in that I ascended Derryclare from different sides - I can't really say which is the 'best' as they are just different.
      The first time (this video), I parked near the Connemara Mountain Hostel alright. I can't rightly remember exactly where the hostel is located in relation to where I started but I know they are very close. At the start of the video you will see a gate and this is exactly where I parked. The coordinates are L846 499 and there is space for a few car parking spots at this access gate. I think the hostel could be on the opposite side of the road and not far away - as I didn't park there I don't know what the parking situation is at this hostel.
      The second time - I accessed Derryclare from the other side, the actual route I used is shown at the end of the Glencoaghan Horseshoe video I uploaded. The location of where you can park in relation to the other hostel - Ben Lettery Hostel for this route is as follows. With Ben Lettery Hostel on your Left Hand Side, drive towards Derryclare for about 1.5 km. You will see a turn on your Left Hand side (I think you will see buses and trucks parked on the LHS as soon as you take this turn). You continue to drive up here for about another 1.5 km and you will come across an area to park and then access Derryclare from this side.
      I hope I haven't confused things more for you!!
      Best of luck with your hike and I hope you get great weather to see the views! 🤞
