Gina Bachauer in a 1955 HMV recording of the Bach-Busoni Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C Major, BWV 564.
Bachauer had recorded the work on 78rpm discs in her first set of HMV recordings in 1949 and then made this re-take six years later, which was paired with two Bach Concerto recordings (also on my channel) on HMV CLP 1111.
This work was a mainstay in her repertoire, the opening piece in her first New York recital at Town Hall in 1950 (an appearance that immediately endeared her to critic Harold C Schonberg), and this second HMV account - set down in two sessions on October 22 and 25, 1955 - features the grandeur and nobility that characterized her playing throughout her career.
Among the qualities for which she was praised that we can hear are a full-bodied sonority at all dynamic levels, clearly etched melodic lines, transparency of texture, and masterful use of the pedal without any loss of clarity.
Many thanks to Gary Lemco and Mike Tubbs for providing this digital transfer of this fantastic recording, which to my knowledge has never been officially reissued on CD.

Wunderbar klare und beherrschte Technik. Vor allem: sehr kontrollierter und sparsamer Pedaleinsatz, was die Durchhörbarkeit des Stückes erhöht.

Another wonderful performance of this piece. More inward and simulating of organ timbres than Rubinstein's account.

Yes, Stevenson's The Transcendental Tradition 1976 recital on APR is well worth hearing.
