    THANK YOU for this! I'm a junior at Texas State studying education and worried about getting hired at the right school in the central Texas area. Your channel is awesome! Thanks for sharing what you do :)

    I kind of snapped awake when I saw Killeen come up on the screen. I moved from Texas last year. Didn't want to teach there, but lots of memories!

    I wish I could do this now. I've applied to 25 schools surrounding my area and only received 3 interviews. The first and second interview I got no feedback, and the third interview they told me I didn't have enough experience. I'm not sure why as this would be my second year teaching in my own classroom. Any tips for this year?

      Yeah COVID19 definitely throws a wrench into all of this. Try this: make a short video (less than 1 min) to send to the school principal (copy the assistant principal to the email). In the video, follow this format.
      _"Hey there [principal name.] I'm Chelsa and I'm a teacher in the area. I saw that your schools mission is to [insert schools mission.] I love that because I try and [insert how you live out their mission]. I would love to partner with you and your teachers in serving your students this upcoming school year! I've attached my resume to this email and hope to get a chance to work together with you and your team!."_
      It will take more work to customize it to each school and some principals may not even watch the video, but it shows you're willing to go above and beyond, that you've got skills with video (important right now), and shows how you will add value to their school (instead of saying 'please hire me!')

    WOW! Very nice that you are sharing this. I'm Bachelor in Engineering and now I'm graduating in math and here in Brazil we need 3 semesters teaching to get the degree and I'm crazyyyyy because I want to start now, but nobody is calling me :( But It's not a good time, but I'll keep looking for an internship....

    • @gibsonedu

      Yeah it's kind of crazy/worrisome how quickly you can start teaching in the US since the need is so high. Good luck and hope you get to work at a great school :)

      Thom Gibson Hey! How are u doing? I'm here again to say that next year I'll start my teacher career for real ✨ and I'm so excited about that. I searched many schools and sent emails, made phonecalls, and delivered my resume in person... I was expecting some volunteer job or internship, cause I graduated in engineering but I'm still graduating in mathematics, in my second University, and graduating in my MBA in education, but that school, near to my home, liked so much of me and offered me a job as teacher 🙏 and the school has a very nice project with math and portuguese! Thanks very much for sharing so greats advices here!

      @gibsonedu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's really great to hear Milla! You say they have a nice project w/ math and portuguese? Are you going to be teaching math IN portuguese? What level math will you be teaching?

    • @millat6810
      @millat6810 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!!! I'm brazilian :) But, I'm studying to take my Cambridge Exam (not only one, actually) because I wanna teach in portuguese and in english, and many (MANY) schools here are bilingual now. For me is more fun, challenged and bilingual schools pay better wages. I'll teaching to elementary school

      @Mankiran Kamaal Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you tried - Schallingora Font Storage Scheme (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one off product for finding teaching jobs online without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend Sam after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.

    Great video! How long did it take for you to complete the Texas Teachers alternative teaching program?

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few months. Had like 2 months of in-person meetings a couple times a week and lot of online modules. You can take your 'content' exams (content for stuff you want to teach) whenever you want if you're ready for them. Did a semester of subbing though while I was going through the certification and that was the true training grounds. Not sure how much Texas Teachers has changed since 2011 when I went through it though. Are you in Texas as well?

    • @its_hopemarie
      @its_hopemarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m considering moving to Texas so I was looking into teaching certification programs there. I work one on one with students that have special needs so I was happy when I saw they offer special education as a track.

    Did you go to each school in each specific district or just one school from every district or just the schools that were hiring?

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      3 districts and most schools in each district; didn't go to many high schools since my certification was in 4-8th grade but I did have a 7-12 speech cert so if there was an availability for it, I went. Hard to know which ones exactly were hiring but even if it was public and online, I'd still go to the ones that didn't have any opening posted since you never know what vacancies may be there that just haven't been posted.

    Do you get to pick what grades we want to teach

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not usually. It's based on where they have availabilities. You can apply to schools that have availabilities in the grades you want to teach though.

    • @mikeyrobinson5355

      Thom Gibson 7-11, but mostly 7th and 9th. So that's like pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry

    • @gibsonedu

      Thom Gibson nice. Im going to subscribe and check out your videos. Just gazing, I passed a few teacher vids. Im a new teacher this year, so I'm looking for all advice i could get.
      Btw, how did you score on your Praxis II and did the schools care?

    • @gibsonedu

      This playlist has all the math stuff in one place - th-cam.com/play/PLw9CvBlOxVpfLe6TQEsb5GSIE4ZaXisx3.html
      Didn't take the Praxis II. Was a Sound Recording Tech major. Took a generalist 4-8 exam to be able to teach those middle years subjects (math, english, social studies, science).

    Quick question if you don't mind: I know you mentioned that some secretaries told you "you're supposed to go through HR" but did you encounter any who point-blank wouldn't let you see the principal? If so, how did you handle this? Thanks.

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brandon, yes there were some secretaries that wouldn't let me see the principals (or the principals were out). I just said 'oh no problem. Would it be OK if I left my updated resume with you to give to the principal?" and they were almost always fine with that.

      Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback. I'm a career-changer currently looking for a teaching job in the south suburbs of Chicago. It has been a REAL struggle so far but I'm going to take your advice re: visiting schools and we'll see what happens. Thanks again!

    What subject do you teach?

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I now teach middle school math, robotics and TH-cam Video Production. I have a little bit of say on the grades that I teach in that I applied for a job for middle school but they did ask me to teach a high school elective too which I decided to also do.

    • @mankirankamaal174

      Thom Gibson And was it an option?

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mankiran Kamaal Yes. But not all schools are like that. I would only apply for jobs that are in grades you want to teach.
