I just got back from there a couple of weeks ago. It's totally fun. The blast on take off isn't all that bad although I was there on a Saturday and no 747s landed or took off that day. Sunday is when the big birds arrive. Did see an Airbus 340 land so it's big enough. 737s give up a blast too just depends where you stand even if you are behind the plane as they don't back up near the fence as much. The landings were so cool and the water so blue. Bars on each end of the beach so living it up was fun.
Great video. Was there in August! My husband was one of the crazy ones holding on to the fence. I stayed just outside the red zone. Awesome experience!
+tamonettX500 To be fair, that sand blast is pretty brutal. My mom stood there to get a video of the plane and now she's still getting sand out of her hair. Suddenly, I understand Anakin's feelings about sand.

I love the way grown men (and women) position themselves to experience the jet-blast. Looks like they're having fun. Must be the best part of their vacation! LOL!
The one thing I regret that people can't experience anymore is landing at old Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong - now that was mind blowing, especially at night. Pilots had to take special training to be able to land there, and it was something to behold. As you'd come in you'd literally look out to the left and see high rise buildings rising ABOVE the plane, while below you'd be skimming along just above all the other tall buildings in the area. Then vroom, just as you'd think you were about to clip on of the structures you'd come screeching down on the runway. The one thing I never get about St. Maarten is that many airports with takeoff areas near roads or whatever have deflector shields build by fencelines to direct engine exhaust up and way. I guess it must be such a tourist thing that they don't bother, though of course the clock must be ticking on the day some American tourist decides to sue over 'long term' harm done to their health by the sand or fumes.
Considering it is an Island, and flat ground is the preferred surface for a runway, they either put it where it is or you would have to swim to get there.
Actually Tygoo7, the beach was already there, someone made the airport there bc is the only flat space on that island big enough to make the airport, lol
