I was a PASSENGER on this Wizzair fllight! It's so funny to see this video on TH-cam, knowing that I was inside that aircraft. It was a great flight and smooth landing by the way. 🙏🙏🙏

Before jumping to conclusion, let's just say we don't know why the plane ended up so scarily low on a fairly routine approach but I doubt it was "intentional" "showing off" lol. However, the people standing there were definitely standing there intentionally despite of the warning signs and traffic lights lol...you cannot get injured if you're not standing there lol. Glad to see the plane eventually touched down without any damage.
No warning sign says you shouldnt stand there on landing, there are only warnings of the jet engine from when the plane is lifting off

The plane was absolutely a tad low on that approach - you can see the PF slightly pitching up to cut the descent rate. But yea, no way they were showing off lol

I cant skip though the fact that most of the people neglect their safety over the feeling of having a 48 ton aircraft passing through their heads. It is what it is and everyone carries its own responsibility for that.
Many thanks for your kind words! There is a responsibility indeed, the authorities have increased the amount of warnings within the jetblast area. Plane spotters are well aware of the risks and always try to spread awareness to tourists!

@@brainscott8198, I doubt they'd be literally saying that. Pretty sure the pilots would make sure they finish finish their beers and all other drinks before they turn the seatbelt lights back on. :p
After doing some math, the PAPI lights have a 3 degree angle and aim towards the touchdown zone/touchdown marker. The distance from the PAPI lights to the fence where the spotters and tourists were is approximately 300m. Based on the calculations with keeping the 3 degree glide path angle the height should be 23.255m above the fence.
On the video it's hard to see but the plane landed just after the runway threshold marker which is around 175m from the fence.
Calculating with the 3 degree glide path (airbus has a feature which keeps the plane on a descent path at set degree) the plane could have been at the height of 13.57m.
Keep in mind these are rough calculations. I'm not familiar in depth about how complex avionics systems calculate altitude (from the center height of the aircraft or the bottom of the landing gears). The bottom of the main gears of the plane are roughly not higher than 5-6 meters when flying above the people, from the bottom of the fuselage (attach point of the wing) to the bottom of the gear the height is 3.79m in between.
Sounds like my 5 minute calculation on how many people you have to massacre to extract enough iron from their body to build a new eiffel tower.
@@viktornemeth6241 It might sound like that, but the formula is correct. The end result might be off a little due to lack of precise data.
Used the distance measuring feature of Google earth, the rule of thumb in aviation is to keep a 3 degree descending angle always. PAPI lights and ILS systems always have a 3 degree angle. Conclusion it's basic trigonometry to calculate it.
@@n35ql @Athos No, not all appraoches have 3 degree glide paths (most yes, but not all). Good thing the good people who designed airports where smart enough to place runways aaway from obstacles, but sometimes there are mountains/hills etc. Tromso Norway or London City for example may have over 4 degrees angles. Also I wish it was basic trigonometry, although the glide angle stays constant the temperature for example has an effect on your barometric altimeter, when too hot or too cold (lets say below -15 degrees), pilots would have to ad some altitude to stay on the correct path. Unfortunatly modern aviation equiptment on the A320 doesnt have a acurate angle measurement instrument in the flightdeck, so pilots would have to use rules of thumbs and a visual path indicator such as PAPI's.

I am currently in the island of Skiathos, when you land at the airport the plane has to land down hard cuz of how short the runway is, when the pilots manage to complete the landing, everyone in the plane gives them a round of applause 👏 still an amazing place! I stay at this restaurant sometimes called family restaurant, you have the best view of Skiathos and can see planes landing in aswell. Amazing place and recommend coming to this amazing island

@@MaloureTV, if they pass a certain point on the runway above a particular speed they would throttle up again take off, circle around and do a second attempt - same as they would at any other airport/runway.

Its a great island been there a dozen times over the last 40 years, and the take off and landings are always something to look forward to. In the old days they couldnt take off with full tanks because of the weight so after takeoff it was a short flight to Volos to fuel up properly for the flight back to London.
I keep returning to Skiathos every year, I guess we are typical Skiathitosis victims.

Brilliant capture ! I’ve experienced this myself, love skiathos such a beautiful island but have to sike myself up for the journey, it’s one of them ones when the wheels touch the runway plane has to break straight away everyone flys forward in their seats 😬

The Air Italy landing seems to have been less intentional and more like a mistake, the Wizzair landing was more stable and seems deliberate. If it wasn't, the pilots themselves needed new pants.
The more important question is, how many of the spectators would need a brain, not to go there when a plane is landing on a short runway?

Not really. Sinking below the approath path is not recommended and companies are constantly reminding pilots not to do it... even if they have "good intentions" and are trying to avoid backtracking.
The pilots did a terrible job.They landed well before the touchdown zone. I rather suspect both will be in the sim by now getting some extra training on basic landing techniques!

There’s a few videos I’ve seen of cockpit views of landings at Skiathos (like this one: th-cam.com/video/wTKXOkrzsLo/w-d-xo.html) and all of them clear the beach and perimeter fence before the radio altimeter says the plane is at 30 feet (9 meters). But the landing gear might be a few meters lower than what the radio altimeter gives as the altitude of the aircraft so maybe the landing gear was 5-6 meters above the ground but probably not lower. Granted, I’m not 100% sure it’s the exact runway in this video but I doubt planes get much lower on this approach than the ones in the cockpit view videos of the same airport.

@@justist3803 This plane came too low for landing. In another words descended too early. At this point as on video the aircraft should have been much higher. It could hit the people or the airport fence. Not far from a disaster.

Α few weeks ago at the very same spot (Skiathos Airport) an old lady was seriously hurt while plane spotting, the jet blast literally lift her off her feet and threw her to the ground. She survived but she was hospitalized for some time.
She won’t be going back there in a hurry
This is very true, it was one of my mothers close friends & she has been in a very bad way, it has been a traumatic time for her family & friends.
