I'm almost 73 and most days I don't dress but! When I go out I always dress nice and put on make-up and my hair is done but I have a simple hairstyle... I wear a dress to go to church, and sometimes I wear a casual one just going out shopping. I just don't like sloppy dressing for me. I'm not bragging but ppl will comment on how nice I look.

@@mkel858 we are the same age……so we remember wearing gloves, hats and hose to church. I believe that dressing as nicely as you can afford shows respect for yourself and others. PS. I just lost 90 pounds and had to buy a WHOLE new wardrobe on a retirement income…..I shopped consignment stores, thrift stores, Walmart and TEMU and I am wearing designer labels at 10% of what they cost new 😘 and also get lots of compliments 😉

Leonie is doing a wonderful thing by directly addressing this aging issue. To those struggling, I get that because the pressures out there are very real. I don't know how I avoided feeling invisible as I have aged, but getting older has been incredibly liberating. Best years yet.

Yup, I agree. I take more fashion risk since retiring because I don't have the pressure to dress to suit the office. Don't have to endure the, "what is she wearing murmur." Never liked fashion drags anyway. I use to hear, "you're going out of the house with that on? Or the, "What are you wearing?" At 67 I get many positive comments from young women on my ensembles. Usually on clothes I've made, so I think it's about fit and scale. If you sew you can do that for yourself. Have fun, so what if you leave the house looking ridiculous, is that so bad?

As one ages, one can sometimes feel irrelevant or unimportant to others. It’s important to find some things/ hobbies that you really love doing, and find your joy, fulfillment, accomplishment in doing it.

Actress/Comedian Lily Tomlin, in an episode of Grace and Frankie, was being rudely ignored by a store clerk so she just walked away with the item she was trying to purchase! She said that invisibility is her superpower! Now I am not advocating stealing, but I do love her attitude. If no one notices you, then do what you want without care! In other words, stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. You were right on the mark about this Leonie!❤

Those two and others like Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Helen Mirren etc might be celebrities but they are also fighting the Hollywood norm by their unique fashion styles, which we can emulate at lower price points, but especially their confidence and attitudes

Leonie, I totally agree with women needing to stop feeling invisible or accepting being treated as invisible. But, that's where confidence comes into play. It's a mindset. If you feel fabulous, then you will be fabulous!
My nearly 100- year-old mom still stands out fashionably and has always been fashion forward as the rest of the older people on both sides of my family were. Whenever we go out, my mom gets compliments, from perfect strangers, on her OOTDs.
Just yesterday, my mom saw a TV commercial for some new, hip, and colorful Sketchers and got really excited. I might surprise her by picking her up a pair. Her other favorite sneakers are both the black and white paisley-print slip on skater style Van sneakers that I bought her a few years ago, along with her Allbirds. She proudly rocks them both. She also always lays out her OOTDs and styles them before getting dressed even if she's only going to the market. I'm the same way.
Since I was in the first grade, and I"m in my 60s now, I was required to coordinate my school outfits daily and lay them out the night before. Clothing was intentional and we kids were also required to look, "presentable" before walking out the front door.
Now, to coordinate my OOTD as I need to zip to a couple malls and also do some other errands. I look at fashion as fresh and fun and expressing one's personality.

That is so true as I was offered a really great job opportunity right out of college.
While shopping with my mom. I complimented this very stylish stranger on her outfit. She came over thanked me, and complimented me on an outfit my mother picked out for me to wear that day😂. She congratulated me on my recent college graduation, and after talking with us gave me her card and told me to call her assistant to set up an interview with her company. She was the senior vice president😮 that became my mentor for several years❤and her and my mom became friends over the years. I called them the Judge and the VP girl squad😂. 🙂🙂It’s a world where no one can really accurately pinpoint where I am. I don’t have any wrinkles. Body is the same.
The younger men (the ones in their late 30s....40) really think I’m roughly their age while men actually my age assume I’m much younger than they are.😂 (I do appear to be “too young” for men my age because by 55-60, they usually łook at least a little “weather beaten😚” (with some gray in their facial hair, eye bags/wrinkles and at least a little bit of a “dad bod” on them) so they tend to think we would definitely not be the same age either.🥴.
I wouldn’t say I pass for their “daughter” but I definitely wouldn’t be seen as in their decade.😶.
Also, I never ever volunteer my age immediately to men. Ever. That’s personal info that they’ll get as we progress a bit. 🤫. I ALWAYS let them all (my age or younger) tell me THEIR age first, (or at least give me some sort of personal info so I can kind of piece together a rough range of how old they might be) so i may decide for myself if they are an option and not have them be the ones to eliminate ME based on MY (older) age. When you łook at least 15 years younger than others your age, you have to navigate and choose how you’re doing it for you) ... It’s .... “interesting.” 🤗

I can wear a new outfit combination every day for several weeks. I have reduced my accessories to the ones I love to wear. I love to get dressed to go to the store from my amazing capsule. I’m 63. I’ve gone through many style changes over the decades. I’m more confident in my choices now. I also believe in trying everything on and tailoring as we are all not the same shape and purchased clothing is made based on the current fit model they used. I will try multiple sizes and if I really love the outfit I will have it tailored to fit me based on the size that was closest to the fit I want. I find at this age I enjoy classic tailored with a touch of unique and quirky. I may get a trendy piece here and there if I really think it works - such as a trendy denim or belt style or shoe. I like more color now that I’ve been retired and limit my colors to about 4 color shades and 3 neutral shades. I purge several times a year if I find I just don’t love something or it doesn’t suit me anymore. Some maybe items I will box away to think about later. I think style is so personal and everyone has their own interpretation of what that means to them. And yes, confidence in what you wear shines like a light and shows your happiness with how you feel. ❤

Hard to dress well daily after retirement. I wore different outfits 5 days a week going to work. After retiring I only succeeded in changing out of sleeping clothes every morning. The rest of the time I wear jeans and some top. This year I am in love with really baggy jeans and more fitted slightly cropped top (no need to tug in). I pair the outfits with cute sandals (no dad sneakers or thick soled shoes) and crossbody Fanny pack. I also kept buying earrings and necklaces. To make it easy I pair them into sets and take photo to save on my phone. I can easily choose what to wear with outfit and which sets to pack for traveling. In retirement I hardly wear skirts, dresses, and suit jacket unless special occasions which seldom happen. Pants are just a lot easier for at home wearing. I am learning to not buy items I don’t wear because I already own so many skirts dresses and jackets. I rather buy higher quality oversized bomber and hoodie zip up sweat jacket. They work better pairing with retirement casual outfits.

    Wonderful and helpful advices, Leonie.
Just to emphasise what you said at the end of the video: there was a survey, conveyed among people at the end of their lives. The thing they all regretted the most is caring too much about what other people think.
    It was eye-opening for me.
I know it is hard "not to care", but once you succeed in "not giving a f*ck", life and freedom will take a whole new meaning. Just try.

I revisited my wardrobe and refreshed it with some new classic looks. Even though I am not working, I still want to dress for my days. I love trying on my clothes. My husband often wonders why I do this! I have discovered that certain necklines don't suit me and certain types of sleeves (puffy ones) don't suit me in addition to certain colors. I’m glad I stayed until the end of your remarks. In the first few minutes of this video, the thought of “dressing up” popped into my head. And then another thought emerged, “Would it be useful to try and recall and consider my memories of playing dress-up when I was a kid?” I did and here is what happened:
Memories of playing dress-up came fast. In my mind’s eye, I was playing with my good friend and neighbor in the basement of our St. Paul home, circa1960. I loved touching the fabrics, noticing the difference in their weight, hand, and drape of the various clothes are mothers had given us. Later in life, I my best friend and neighbor was the daughter of a well-heeled woman who went to a lot of parties. The assortment of nightgowns in her mother’s cedar closets amazed me.
As I focus on memories of playing dress up (and the teen equivalent getting “dressed”) I realize my particular interest has always been in "putting together the look." The complexity of choosing multiple pieces for a "look" and thinking through how each piece “fits” with the other pieces fascinated me then and still does today. I’m drawn to the mental process of choosing things and thinking through their combinations. Maybe playing dress up builds our ability to think in complex ways.
The other part of “dressing up” that attracted me was “putting on the clothes” of another. I don’t think it was because I wanted to be that other person. I think curiosity drove me. Quite literally, I wanted to know what it felt like to be that other person. Even today, I wonder what it would be like to carry the weight of weapons. Maybe playing dress-up helps us to develop our empathy.
Playing dress-up also gives us opportunities to think more consciously about the roles we taken on as individuals. Did I like dressing up as a fairy? Did I like dressing up as a cowboy? As women in the 21st century, we are asked and able to juggle the many roles we assume as grow-ups and doing that consciously rather than unconsciously makes all the difference.
In your video, you called on women to think more consciously about how they want to “appear” to the world. As a retired person, I delight in purposely creating different looks and exploring the reactions of others to my look. Differences in the response of others when we “dress-up” and when we “dress-down” provide lots of information about societal norms.
Even after all these years, it’s great to think about playing dress-up. I highly encourage everyone to play.

So that’s one positive for feeling invisible. I actually played dress up yesterday. I purchased a ton of new items over last month for fall. It’s fun, but a bit confusing. Working on my new “style”. Thank you showing a variety of styles and offering some of the best advice on breaking the rules and picking the right colors starting fresh, love it! I was shopping with my 16 year old yesterday and actually bought a simple linen blend terracotta top in the juniors dept. to go with some linen blend black wide leg drapey pants (on sale).. it was a good day.. thank you Leonie ♥

It is interesting when you think about the lack of estrogen in women and suddenly not being acknowledged, especially by men. I definitely noticed this when I turned 50. Now, I don't care. In the beginning, it bothered me. It is a normal part of growing older and it is better than not being here. I still work remotely and need to dress for Zoom calls. I have beautiful clothes and I enjoy wearing them even when I am not working.

Leonie this was a much needed video and I agree whole heartedly with the pit falls of our inner critic. It can be devastating for some women. Swapping out a negative view point of ourselves for a more positive outlook isn't easy, but so necessary if we're going to show up as the best possible version of ourselves. Over the past year, I lost 50lbs and bought a new wardrobe, I'm soon to be 68, but my gosh, I love my classic sense of style, love my new clothes, and I really enjoy getting ready for my day now, no matter what I've got planned for the day. Paramount in this transition was brutally weeding out old clothes that just didn't suit my taste any more. I was shocked to see how many items I'd been hanging on to, but never wore. Today I do play around with my pieces to create new more fashion forward outfits. There was a time in my life when I was overly concerned about what others thought about me, but when it comes to fashion, I dress only to please myself these days. Since I like classic pieces, some days, I might feel a bit overdressed, but hey, why not show up being the best dressed person in the room? Why not? I'm a confident women and whether I'm wearing a tank top under a button down shirt with baggy wide leg jeans or a nice skirt, I want to show up for my day feeling and looking my best! Thanks again for a great video!

I bought a pair of crocs while on vacation at Disney this last week. These things are crazy, covered in treats, pink and cartoony - and I knew I wanted them the moment I saw them. I'm 50 and I know a ton of people who don't like crocs already and these things would be considered a fashion abomination. It's okay, these are just for my comfort and joy - not to mention a great conversation starter. I'm not competing with my 20 year old self, this is just for fun. I need to play in my wardrobe and assemble more fun outfits for myself. The crocs kind of open my mind to the fact I've been missing whimsy and imagination in my outfits and that is sad because that is a core part of my personality. Lots of great ideas to mull over from this video - well done!

I had my colours done back in the 80’s. It really helps when shopping to know what suits me. Because if what colour I am wearing suits me I naturally feel better. Although I do know that now that my hair is grey I can no longer wear grey and I seem to look better in more pastel shades rather than some of the darker colours I could wear when I was younger and dark haired.

I have a rail and I’ve been trying different items if I find a look I like I put it together on the rail to wear. If there are things that don’t work then get rid of them or put them away and revisit later. I totally relate to being drawn to the same safe styles although I have tried to evolve over the years (managed it a bit, even got a long denim skirt recently!). It's painstaking work though in tiny little increments. I did watch a second hand re-style series here in the UK recently and I felt really inspired by what the stylists were doing with two participants each week, turning around their style, creating new and exciting looks. I noticed that they were putting together well styled outfits with clashing colours and prints and designs and achieving really juicy looks. Certainly making me look different at it all!

Thanks for the new video Leonie! Here I´ll answer your two questions:
    1.
I create outfits in the beginning of the new season including the new trends. As an example for this season: Work outfit no 1: A black blazer with white trims, white or burgundy top, black trousers and a burgundy nail polish. Work outfit no 2: A black blazer with a burgundy top, black trousers and a thin scarf in lepard print I will use as a belt. Work outfit no 3: Navy blazer with a burgundy top, navy trousers and a burgundy nail polish. Party outfit nr 1: Black dress with white trims on arms and round the waist.
    2.
I really use 100 % of my wardrobe. (But I´m really good in cleaning my wardrobe regually.)

As a physician I can tell you that I see a lot of women come in with various aches and pains and the only thing wrong with them is that they are suffering from invisible woman syndrome. Kids have left, husbands are at work and these women are now just homemakers with not much to do. They are lonely and aching for relevancy. Its almost a loss of identity. NO amount of going to the stores and trying new clothes, hiring a specialist is going to fix that by the way because all of these things may fix the exterior but not the interior and since a lot of these women are at home all day they may not have a reason to shop. My advise is exercise, have a healthy diet but most importantly find a purpose in life. Living without a purpose is like a ship sailing in the ocean with no direction. It's the purpose in life whether it be volunteering, nurturing a hobby, taking up a new job, learning a new skill that will provide relevancy and lift you out of being invisible. Life is long and when you are older you will lose relevancy unless you take steps to make yourself relevant . Wearing new clothes aint going to fix that

It's so much easier to navigate through fashion, i.e. styles and colours, when you are certain what suits you, colour wise.

If you are older (60's+) and you go into stores and head to the same things, there is probably a reason. These are things you have figured out that look good on you (it's not about being in a rut and wearing the same things for decades). Most likely they are also in your price range, your size, your colors, so this is not a bad thing. Also, that's a lot better than trying "new things" that look ridiculous.

As I watch many many fashion videos it seems to be a closed circle. Women are taught 5, 10 or "simply 15 rules to follow" and they have been given the ridiculously boring idea of a "capsule wardrobe" to be clones of each other - and when they start to be invisible also by that - the resolution is to break all those rules 😅
And it is true, Leonie is right speaking about breaking the rules.
We can simplify it to 2 words:
    color & fantasie!
But fashion in general are making rules. I suggest namely WE DON'T HAVE TO BE FASHIONABLE ☺️
