      This was designed to keep kids from cheating or else it would have potentially disastrous consequences. Which is still true. If anyone doesn't know how to fix a bricked system than yes to them it's a paperweight, however if anyone is remotely trained and educated with computers and basic programming there truly isn't such a thing as a bricked console. Which brings to question, why don't you want to try to beat the game on your own skill? It says something on a personal level if your willing to at least try instead of cheat.

      Actually that is sort of curious since the GC and GBA don’t share hardware. Same ROM but it would require a different emulator so what it does when it tries to load that scenario wouldn’t necessarily create the same output.
      Also would that make the standalone GBA ROM a port and not an emulation (since it crashes the GBA, meaning the system itself presumably couldn’t find an out in that situation)?

    Many years ago (definitely before 2016) I typed several Metroid passwords, memorized from my youth, on my cousin's 3DS. One of them was all 6s on the top row and all Ks on the bottom row. It froze his console, but it definitely didn’t brick it.
    I’m pretty certain that any password that normally resets the NES version will freeze the 3DS version.

    • @Larry

      Judt typed it into the Metroid Password Generator, It thinks you had been playing the game non stop for 29 years! you also had one energy tank, and Ridley dead.
      But it crashes as it doesn't give the game a starting location, which confuses it and locks.

    Note that the password is basically equivalent to this password:
    000000 00000B
    000000 00000B
    And the password causes it to pick an invalid starting location, which can lead to the NES executing an invalid instruction. Nothing permanent here, just power it off and on again.
    All these passwords will also start at an invalid starting locations:
    000000 00000x
    000000 00000x
    Where x is between 5 and 9, or A through F.

    From what I know, the problem is not so much that any part of the code itself is invalid on it's own, but rather that it clashes horribly. Basicly, it has the resetflag enabled which boots the player to the first room, but the location is a diffrent area(I think it was tourian, but does not really matter). Once one of the two aspects are fixed, the code performs normally. Why nintendo did not think to make it impossible for the game to run illegal instructions in the first place is beyond me, but eh. something like that also happened in the japanese version of pokemon gen5, where one pokemon that was shinylocked was able to spawn shiny and thus just crash the game.

    Bricking means the console becomes unusable and will not work no matter how much you reset or unplug it. The name comes from rendering the console basically as useful as a brick. It does NOT brick Nintendo 3DS systems, just crash them.

    • @gold_lightning
      @gold_lightning 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @FreeBirb Except all it really does is freeze the system up in a way that prevents the normal forced power down from working as it should. If you remove the battery or let it drain all the way, the system will work as normal from then on. So, not a brick. The privilege escalation needed to put the firmware in a compromised state is far more complicated than just crashing the nes emulator in a big way.

    The TH-camr Bisqwit did an analysis on why this password (and similar passwords) cause so many problems. Essentially, these passwords tell the game to load an invalid location. When that happens, the game sends improperly formed commands to the cartridge's MMC1 memory mapper chip, putting it into an inconsistent state and sending the code spiraling off into chaos - where it will eventually encounter an illegal opcode, halting the emulator (or freezing the NES).
    This also explains why the very earliest cartridges behave differently - the first revision of the MMC1 chip may have been, shall we say, "relaxed" in its fault handling, while the later revisions adhere to the specification much more stringently. Since emulators are all based on the specification, they will behave the same as the later revisions. (It is likely the actual ROM was not changed between these versions.)

Raven Branwen has to work two jobs to compensate for your absence, and without a proper male authority figure Bowser Jr. has gotten involved in gang activity. "Soft Brick" isn't a real term for fuck's sake. That's a Freeze or Console Hang Up. A Brick renders the console PERMANENTLY useless, like in the early days of Wii softmodding doing it without care, would result in an ACTUAL brick, meaning you'd need to actually buy a NEW one.

    • @justinkendall8341
      @justinkendall8341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Soft brick is a term but it's not used correctly here. Generally a soft brick is something like when a device will turn on but cannot be used in any meaningful way, like (say) a Linux box that boots up but then sits spinning on the kernel loading text indefinitely... or a computer that boots to the bios splash but can't be interacted with. A hard brick is the traditional "brick" where the device is effectively an electronic brick/paperweight and cannot even power on to any boot screen etc.
      Using proper terminology from the field is important to make sure communication happens effectively. If someone said to me their device was "soft bricked", there's no way that I would think "oh, just reset it" or "oh just pop the battery out", I would be thinking about things like OS reinstall, flashing firmware, sideloading, etc, and that's where my advice would be coming from. That'd be a really bad situation for someone who really just needed to power cycle their device.

    • @kat_lynx
      @kat_lynx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tommy Kavanaugh No, I don't control the world, but this misuse of terms like this lead to rumors, false accusations, clickbait and sensionalistic headlines, poor journalism all around. For example, even if it might not be the best example, the news that Mighty No. 9 bricked Wii Us spread like wild fire to make the game look even worse than it already was, it was entirely fake. The game did not brick Wii Us, it merely froze them pre-update patch, requiring to turn off the console and turn it back on. The console wasn't damaged in any way.

    • @kat_lynx
      @kat_lynx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So imagine information like a=Hockey Puck b= Basket Ball and (H)(I)(0) represent Five, Ten, and Fifteen The information might be 0aHbi could mean level 15 5 Hockey Pucks collected and starting with 10 Basketballs This would mean cobbling up some thing like 8K6bi would give bizarre results like Level 8 Key to Boss section 10 Basketballs. But the creators didn't intend for anyone to locate the 10 Basketballs in level 8 and so when you defeat the boss to retrieve one you might develop a fatale error, get it?

    If I would've been the developer of emulator, I would've add an error like
    "Error 0x000... Don't try to engage Ridley in such manner please..."
    I mean, I don't see anything wrong with Nintendo just crashing the emulator, what it's supposed to do when it encounteres an illegal execution code generated by the password for fuck's sake!
    Bricking the console is not good ofc, but just properly crashing the emulator - I consider it an okay fix. Maybe an improvement here will be just adding a more understandable error, which says that it's the game's code that had crashed the game, not smth else. Not just "an error occured".
    Switch version does it right - "An error has occured WITHIN THE GAME". And I don't see any more need in fixing the bug which only occurs when someone is being rude/intentionally trying to break the game, not the bug which I dunno makes the final boss disappear for everyone and soft locks the game.
    Fixing the rom will be much more expensive job than just properly crash the emulator. Although I do think that this job is already done by miriads of reverse engineer enthusiasts, and Nintendo just needs to apply this in their game. Maybe they are just not Rockstar Games? (those who embedded someone's NoCD hack in their official release)
