Yet they do forget how easily they threw Rhodesia under the bus to protect themselves.

      Imagine this as an analogy:
You and a mate are stranded in the middle of the desert and you know it is a three day trek when you are healthy. However your mate has a broken leg and is already dehydrated. What do you do? Try and help him and guarantee both of your fates to doom or do you push on alone so at least one of your families won't be heartbroken? That is the choice South Africa faced on a geopolitical scale. They did what they could for Rhodesia when and how they could.

@@spets4265 I don't buy it. The economic situation in Rhodesia was completely dependent on SA, but SA had a monopoly on several alloys which prevented anything other than sanctions from being enacted. I've spoken with many Rhodesians and South Africans that agreed, the Nationalist Party stabbed Rhodesia in the back.

No Spets. Vorster refused aide and trade w Rhodesia if they A. Went into Portuguese East Africa(Mocambique) to aide the Portuguese citizens betrayed by NATO backed coup d'etat in April 74. Then Kissinger & British agents were sent to SAF selling Vorster pipe dreams of Blk Africa being cool w SAF if only Rhodesia wasn't standing in the way everything would be ok'. This was patent divide & conquer and Vorster played along with it thus isolating SAF for the post-1979 period. The US also promised naval & land aide vs Cuba/USSR/DDR in Angola which SAF launched major ops in 75 based upon and they had none of the aide and wound up withdrawing - due not to military necessity but due to fears of how it would look diplomatically. His leadership may have been OK domestically but SAF's isolation was done under his leadership or lack thereof. Botha was in a near impossible situation by the time he assumed leadership in late 78 thanks to Vorster.

Note on his point on 2/3 of Europe's oil passing by South Africa. The reason why so much cargo came around Africa as opposed to the more convenient Suez Canal was that until the demilitarization of the Sinai following the 1978 accords, the Suez Canal was the border between cozy neighbours Israel and Egypt. Before this speech, a few ships were stranded in the canal for years.

And he promised help with a detente with blk Africa if only we don't intervene in Mozambique and if we threaten to cut Rhodesia off to force them to surrender to "transitional govt". By now this has been done. Surely it's not to divide Southern Africa and isolate South Africa. No no no it's all gonna be OK." - John Vorsters policies summarized. Bravo sir what leadership! Were those "Whites only" signs that we see real? If so, is that another petty detail? The fact is, SA had first class and second class citizens, and that was determined by race alone. Ergo, it was a racist regime. There really is no debate.
