I am reading many comments that he did it wrong. It would be helpful then, if one of you make a video on how to do it the right way. I have some broken shingles to replace and would like to replace them correctly. Right now Mr. Helper Guy is the only person who has a video on replacement, and I thank him for it. And, I thank the rest of you for your comments, at least the constructive comments.
Eh it's not that he's doing it wrong. But there's ways to do it safer such as wetting all the tiles down with water. N wearing proper PPE such as the right mask n a suit. Most the time the biggest concern is getting the asbestos fibers in your lungs eyes etc. Other than that he's not doing anything wrong lol
Yeah man... You won't be makin many video tutorials in the future if you keep removing asbestos like this. You should be showing people how to do it safely! I do this for worm and have heard plenty of horror stories about people doing this wrong. Suit, mask and dispose of all the waste appropriately. Don't screw around with this stuff!
For those of you attacking this kind man showing you how to remove a broken shingle. Here is what is said online: Asbestos siding is far less dangerous due to the fact that it is painted, and installed outside. Very few fibers are released, even when siding shingles crack and break. Care and proper procedures should always be taken during removal and disposal, but in general, asbestos siding ranks very low on the list of materials that contain asbestos as far as danger and health risks.
I pulled off every shingle on my garage with only a paper mask. I probably should have at least wore a better mask but I had to get shit done. I highly doubt a single run in would cause issues or this would be a world wide pandemic. I'll let you know in 30 years if it effected me lol.
yep, thousands of people worked in manufacturing facilities, thousands of people installed this stuff cutting it with no mask, unlikely this is going to kill you or him but why take chances? A tyveck suit cost $12, a respirator cost $40, and at least wear gloves.

I actually work in abatement and do this for a living. The point here is that asbestosis has a 30 year life span. If he breathes in fibers while removing that siding they may not effect his lungs for 30 years. However in 30 years he will wonder why he has mesothelioma or asbestosis. And for those of you saying at least wear a mask, well that's funny too because just ya paper mask alone will not prevent all the fibers from getting to his lungs. He needs a half mask that is approved by niosh and filters approved by niosh to properly protect himself. Good luck pal.
Me too bud these guys don't know what they are teaching the masses before you touch asbestos do your homework man the cringe I get arching him create dust when th the hammer and prying
yeah, this is not smart. Zero precaution taken. Which I know thousands of people have been exposed who had no side effects. I see this stuff on so many houses and you know the old timers cut it and never even wore a mask. I wonder what percentage of them developed issues.
friable vs non friable. its a huge difference. with that said, mask, sure better safe than dead in 30 some odd years. but seriously, this is non friable, meaning it doesnt readily become airborne, now the stuff that hangs on old pipes and duct work that looks like it will fall apart if you breath on it. put your ppe on. Thank you for this video, I am going to be grabbing that slate ripper tool.
My contractor just removed these shingles from my home. Some even cracked in my driveway. It did rain most of these days. The contractor said not to be concerned as the amount of asbestos was not dangerous. He said you need to go at it and make dust from it to be considered dangerous. I have a 2 year old and my yard is full of little pieces. What do I do? Just pick it up call it and call it a day?
Don't mow the lawn, pick up what you can while coving your face, and wearing plastic gloves. Put it in a zip lock bag, and then inside another. Have a soil tester come to your home.
I am not being a hater here. I respect all that put themselves out there to try to help others. There is some very useful information here, for sure. But, not wearing a mask and asbestos suit here is a mistake.
Just curious, I have never needed to remove anything but the three bottom nails using a tiny little prying tool of the screwdriver handle type and a small inclined wooden wedge for the pry to rest on. The vice grip helps sometimes as well. It would be great if there was a slide hammer with a vice grip to pull the pesky nails. I almost never break a tile and am careful because of the asbestos with a mask.
What was the dark material under it? I have to remove all the asbestos siding from my house to prep for a siding contractor to do his work. I want to know what I should expect to find under there... My siding looks exactly like on that house.
Hey , I seen how to replace or remove Asbestos Shingles but what about Install Asbestos Shingle ? I got a project and need some tips from you . Any ideas ? I'm having a problem of drilling a hole for those extra pieces .
Agree. But realistically, does anyone commenting here know how friable the asbestos is in this type of siding? And what the exposure maximum limits are? I'd say if you're replacing a few pieces and you're already middle aged, your chances of dying from mesothelioma are pretty slim
Tiles are installed bottom to top. It is easier to remove them from top to bottom. Also tiles should not be broken and respiratory protection should be worn while removing the tiles.
If you need to replace them don't. Get rid of all of them. Wear a correct asbestos rated mask and environmental suit. Put in a box and place box in a thick plastic bag and seal with duct tape. Find a land fill that will take them. When removing them from the house, have somebody continually spray water over the entire area to include the eaves, wall and ground surrounding the work area. Immediately place all pieces in a cardboard box. Around 30 pounds per box.
It's dangerous handling the crumbling pieces, contamination hazard through the washing machine, in the wind. Stuff won't melt if the neighbors catch fire though.
I'm not here to criticize. But I am concerned of the lack of respirator, gloves. I mean, dont't people were a full protective suit when handling this stuff? Asbestos lodges in the lungs and never leaves. And I think you are supposed to have a special bin for the asbestos to dispose of. I am NOT an expert but I have asked around and knowledgeable people have told me to leave it to the experts. That said, I don't want to pay some "experts" to pull of my asbestos siding and charge me $500 or more. I'm not criticizing the man's technique but I would like to hear more about safety.
the problem is THEY DID KNOW...YES...THEY DID....IT WASNT SUDDENLY DISCOVERED...just big money was suddenly being made by a BIG company who knew how to lobby.

This has got to be the worst instructional video. NEVER break asbestos panels, aka, transite, as you will release fibers. Please use this video as a how not to do something.
sorry, this is painful (not funny) to watch.... Sure, I too appreciate the thoughts/tips on how to pull off old ASBESTOS siding, and I'll be using them when taking on my old collapsing shed. BUT shocked you don't mention the dangers. (Are you not fully cognitive of such issues?) When I take on this task (on my own home) I won't be risking my life (literally), as you did. I'll have on the full body tyvek suit, plus high-end 3m mask, goggles, new filters, the works. (all available these days very cheap via amazon). I do hope Mr. helperguy that you're still well, but even while helping us, you've recklessly endangered your own life, and all those yahoos here who think this is cool. (er, sticking it to the "liberals") Surprised yahoo even lets this stay up, as is.
It's not my place to criticise your methods but it looks to me like you're removing Asbestos materials with no form of protection whatsoever. I'm no professional but I've seen that stuff kill 2 family members and it is something you should be extremely afraid of, especially when you're doing this. That stuff needs removing professionally and sealed in a foot thick bag then dumped somewhere it will never escape into the atmosphere. Please excuse me if I sound arrogant mate, but Asbestos scares the shit out of me and I care about people...

I really like the idea of using a slate ripper to get at those hidden nails. Thanks!
am i the only one who loves this type of siding? i think the wavy looks great and it basically lasts forever unless hit pretty hard by something.
Thanks for showing me how to replace damaged asbestos siding. Much appreciated.
Shouldn’t you be wearing the right protective gear when removing?!!! The fibers are small and can be easily inhaled.

This guy might sound like he inhaled too much asbestos, but he is spot on with this removal. The slate tool is key as he says. Well done lad.
I did it the same way this guy did and now I’m dead so thanks for killing me 😂
Got a good question. What is the name of that prybar you're using to hook the nails and pry the next panel away from the house?
It's called a prybar

The white stuff in the dark stuff is mold from moisture, either thru the shingles or bounced up from below

You can drill a hole in a new nonasbestos shingle with a masonry drill bit.
You broke the tile releasing millions of asbestos spores right in front of you. This is wrong.
Asbestos doesn’t have spores. It’s not a fungus, it’s a fiber.
