  • Would you work in a stinking sewer to scavenge for money? The Toshers of Victorian England actually made a lot of money searching the fetid tunnels under 19th Century London. But there were all sorts of dangers awaiting these intrepid explorers - from collapsing ancient tunnels to water torrents and ferocious rats. It’s hard to think of a worse job in Victorian England - though if you've seen other videos in this series you will know there are strong contenders! See the playlist or channel page for more worst Victorian era jobs.

      Thinking about it, I believe that toxic (or at least unbreathable) gases building up in the old, unventilated sewers were probably the source of rumors about "foul air" killing people.
      I don't know how often that would have actually happened, but one person either dying or even just passing out (and being recovered by another shore worker) would be enough to start the story going. People in the Victorian era had a lot of ideas about miasma/"bad air", and didn't have much awareness about the sort of gases that would actually displace air in the confined, deep tunnels built centuries before.

    Am I the only one that thinks this particular part of history should be learned in school? I’m American but I think it would be a great idea to teach this in our world history classes or at least have this as an elective for kids. It’s interesting and it would be a great exercise in critical thinking.

    I've read Mayhew! It's a great book. London in the Victorian period was probably the greatest city ever to exist. I mean, imagine it. The financial powerhouse of the world on one side of the street and people starving to death on the other. An empire that spanned the globe yet inferior to Rome in basic civil services, two thousand years before. Ever since I read my first Sherlock Holmes story, I was hooked. Light, ambition, and power on one side, darkness, despair, and mind numbing poverty on the other. The juxtaposition is almost unimaginable.

      @@FactFeastyeah totally. I love this era of history, that’s why I love your channel so much. I was hooked after reading the Sherlock Holmes books, watching old movies especially Hammer Horror type stuff. I also love the Victorian history of Australia, I was lucky I learnt it at school, the Bushrangers, Gold rush etc where my favourites. Sadly my kids weren’t taught hardly any of it. So I had to teach them, it’s lucky they loved history as much as me. The also grew up in a home built in 1875, which hadn’t been changed inside really at all! Its was so much fun for them too, except for the little “invisible friend” that all my children played with, her name was Ethel! Like HTF did my children learn that name? So many memories. Anyway thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel to make all the mini Documentaries that we love and appreciate. I marvel at all the illustrations etc that you must hunt for to use? Do you find most on the net? Do you have a huge collection of books, pamphlets, paintings, illustrations yourself that you use.? Or do you find them in old book in libraries or museums etc? Photograph or scan them and use both? Anyway thanks once again. Cheers from Australia

    This would make for an interesting lower end setting or scenario in TTRPGs.
    _"You're not the hero of legend who rises from nothing to slay a dragon or thwart a nefarious Warlock._
    _You're not the knight or wizard who protects a village from Orcs._
    _You're not even a noted fighter at the local pugilist pit or a streetshow magician._
    _Nay, you're a slum dweller who ventures into the great city's labyrinthine sewers to eke out your meager living, while hoping you don't run into anything too dangerous down there. And for you a trio of starving goblins with clubs can get too dangerous too fast..."_
    🤔

      It seems odd that mudlarks didn't seek to plunder the 'riches' of the sewers too, though I assume to some extent this may have been a factor of age and physical ability. I imagine sewer hunters were protective of their domain - the 'informant' in this video having being invited and trained in the skills necessary to survive its dangers.

      The British government ran it .The class system was well entruly entrenched. Extreme poverty were vast amounts of the population lived from hand to mouth on a daily basis. Living and dying on the streets of the UK or dealing with the trauma of the workhouse. Sadly for some people risking their lives doing some of the filthiest jobs in order to survive.

  • @LaHayeSaint
    @LaHayeSaint 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Here is a moot point. Pray why were the authorities so concerned about "toshers" working the sewers? As one tosher pointed out that the authorities wouldn't care if a poor person starved to death, but suddenly were concerned ostensibly about the "safety" of the tosher. Translated, it means that some people had found a lucrative trade, albeit a dangerous one, and were exempt from paying tax. Correct analysis? it was a pity they chose to subsequently drink themselves to death, else otherwise, their families could have extricated themselves from such squalid living conditions. I don't blame them from not paying tax. Do you?
