'Pure Finder' (Worst Jobs in Victorian England)

  • There was nothing 'pure' about this Victorian job! This was even worse than the ‘Bone Grubber’ with street collectors taking waste from the streets. The pure finder's job was as dreadful in reality as it sounds, involving an extreme form of recycling. You will learn, in detail, about the desperate conditions of those who found themselves trapped in this form of ‘work’ in order to earn money to feed themselves.

As a child, I was the "pure finder" for 2 pure bred German Shepherds, and, then, 2 pure bred Doberman Pinchers. It was a very, very disgusting "job," but I had no other choice.
I feel so terrible that people, during that period of time, were forced to perform any job that they could in order to feed themselves and/or their families. I know that my great-gram used to use her dogs "droppings" for her little garden. She'd say that it was cheaper than buying fertilizer from the store.

I noticed he talks about the practice that the extremely poor would engage upon when they would find a crust, upon which they would subsist. That they would seep it in boiling water... ironically enough, if they had developed this practice based upon experience, that would be the most guaranteed to protect them from Catching something-or-other. But then, elsewhere he remarks on how they used boiled crusts as a form of tea, when they did not have enough money to purchase tea.
I used to read those African Explorer type books. One that had some really hilarious stories in it was called Africa speaks. The man went across African entire Expedition, from west to east. They filmed the entire way. He remarked that he never drank water. He always drank tea, brought to a rolling boil. That was the only way he could be sure that the water he was drinking was not going to make him sick.

I don’t quite get it. How did rubbing dog dung on a hide make the leather better? And why was dog dung better for this than the many other kinds of manure that must have been available in Victorian London (horse, ox, cat, poultry, human, rat, etc.)? Lastly, was there nothing less disgusting they could have substituted?

Carnivore dung is more alkaline. It could be there are enzymes that work on skin too.

The poor sods needed a Pure Guild eventually. But better still, they needed a revolution, and so do we, because the exact same depraved society exists to this today. Working class people! Don't delude yourself that your living conditions have improved since then, because you aren't a pure finder. You are in the same shit, being the same exploited in a reckless economy of immoral inequality. Rise up!
