I developed tremors and had a flare up during a project. First big shake that needle went through my thumb nail an the top of the pad... Man that bugger hurt for a week. I now have a service dog that can earn me before a flare up and now only stab myself a dozen or more times per project. That's right folks, needle felting is a blood sport when I do it 😅
Oh my goodness! Ouch! That sounds very painful 😔 glad you have a service dog now to warn you when a flare up is going to happen, they're so clever! Maybe you could try leather finger protectors? Or even leather gardening gloves 😊 thanks for watching
Any advice for managing tremors with something like this? I can't really predict mine, but it almost always seems to happen when I finally feel motivated to do something tedious with sharp objects lmao
I just started needle felting, found you thrgh this video. I love that your do's and don'ts are so practical. I also super appreciate, as a blind felter, that you talk through so much of what you're doing while you do it. So many people depend on just showing their work and don't narrate their actions. So thank you for making videos I can get information from. And lastly, you have such a soothing wonderful voice; I need a third hand so I can drink my tea while I felt, because I'd then be at pique contenment. Thank you for this channel!
Oh wow, thank you for such lovely comments, I'm so glad you find my tips helpful and practical. I'm really touched and pleased that my videos are helping you to needle felt 😁 I know what you mean about having a third arm 🤣 that would be very handy - pun intended! my brew often goes cold when I'm engrossed in felting 😊
Your videos teach so many things that I had to intuit through endless trial and error when I was starting out, so I'm definitely recommending your channel to my friends that I'm trying to get into needle felting! Wonderful work.
Thank you so much for these lovely comments, you're very kind, thank you for recommending my channel to your friends, really appreciate it, thanks for watching.
It was helpful to see you holding a round shape either with a bit of unfelted wool sticking out the side or with another needle. I was having trouble felting a small round shape. Also liked the tip on how to join arms. Your videos are so instructive and fun to watch.
Thanks for the comments Jennifer, glad you find the videos helpful and fun to watch 😊 yes I should have mentioned verbally about holding a small piece of wool with another needle, it's very useful 😊 I learnt that from another needle felters video, I think it was felts by Philippa. Thanks for watching.
I just made my first and only animal (cat) out of cat hair, but using the other technique with soap and water and a template. It shrank by 70% in a few hours. It was soooo funny watching it shrink! I am going to try needle felting now. Wish me luck. Like your site very much! Great sense of humour Julie
Oh wow, that sounds like an interesting process! Good luck needle felting, I've never tried using car fur but I believe it's possible, hope you have fun in the process, thanks for the lovely comments and thanks for watching
Loving these videos! I have been trying needle felting the past few days, and am really enjoying it. These kinds of videos help me a lot with learning, thank you!
Thank you for this! I do get discouraged from time to time with needle felting and often set it aside. (I have several unfinished projects) 😂 Your easy-to-understand and gentle explanation encourages me to keep trying. As you say, it's important that we enjoy what we're doing. I'm definitely up for the "right side of the brain" with felting/sculpting; I had the book when I was an art student (painting) and curious about your take on it😇
Thank you for your lovely comments, yes I find I have to try not to be too hard on myself when it's not going quite right, I hope you do keep trying to needle felt, also sometimes I find it goes through an odd looking stage but if I keep going it often works out ok 😊 oh great! you have the book 😊 I'll get working out some exercises 👍 thanks for watching
I have never felted before. I have never searched felting related content before. But this video showed up on my recommendation page and I just had to know
I liked this one too! I think what people forget is they are poking & teasing hair/fibers into a shape. That takes patience & determination. I love this hobby & fully admit many of mine look like mutants in their beginning core shape.
Thanks Rian, very true it does take patience determination. Yes mutants is a good way of describing them 😂 mine often look very weird at some point in the process 😁 thanks for watching
I am working with leather gloves. I really love to hold my piece in my hand, especially to felt tiny corners, I felt between my fingers and the leather gloves stop any stab!
Aw thank you for your comments, it's lovely to know that I've cheered you up 😊 I hope you enjoy learning to needle felt, it can be good fun 😁 thanks for watching
I want to start needle felting, im so glad I found you! Keep up the great work! Though are you able to make a video on needle felting gradients? I've been wondering on how that would turn out.
Aw thank you for your lovely comments. Can I check I understand correctly, so do you mean that you would like to know how to needle felt a gradual change in colour, through say 2 or 3 similar colours? Also is this for a 3D project or 2D? Only I am planning to create a 2D picture sometime soon which I could cover this in, if that would be helpful? Or were you thinking of fur on a three dimensional animal? Thanks for watching.
@Julie's Felted Friends No problem! For the amount of colours, maybe 3? And if it doesn't trouble you that much, a 2D project would be easier to understand (hopefully) for beginners. Though this is entirely your choice on the dimensions of the project!
Many thanks for this, it's really helpful to know what you're interested in learning 😊 that's great, I'll try to include something in the 2D picture in planning on making, thanks again for your support.
I bought my first animal kit which was a capybara..first newbie mistake was using too much felt as he ended up with a foat face 😂 Not a pretty sight but with my second kit (a ginger cat) i used much less wool as i can always add layers so that was my first lesson to learn! Like anything else, it's a learning curve! Yours is the first video ive watched on TH-cam and i couldn't help but laugh while still learning some basics...new sub 😊
Awesome video! I just ordered stuff to start felting, And I happen to have that book! I got it yearrrrs ago when I started drawing! What a coincidence! Haha
Aw thanks for this, glad you like it, yes I think the book was quite popular, but I believe some of the science has moved on now but I still found it helpful when learning to draw 😊 thanks for watching
Love it! I dont have the tools but i have a car of cat hair lol! I neevr stick with stuff for long and have a crappy sense of coordination but i was able to draw decently and have always wanted to try sculpture lol! Im going to try!
Hi Katie, thanks for this, if you have a look at the description of this video I have links to the wool and needles that I recommend, if you want more information on which equipment to buy I have a video that goes into that here: th-cam.com/video/5FfOgujjoBE/w-d-xo.html thanks for watching 😊
I would love to see more videos and instruction on how to better find scale and portion. I am enjoying everything aspect of this art form. The more information the better 😊
Hi Lindy, Many thanks for this, it's good to know you're interested in scale and proportion, I am working on a video for the future that will give exercises to practice this, so watch this space and click the 'All notifications' to make sure you don't miss it, in the meantime, in case you haven't watched it already, this video on shaping does cover some tips on shaping: th-cam.com/video/WPQnkA03tg8/w-d-xo.html hope it helps, thanks for watching
@@juliesfeltedfriends thank you for the link. I've been felting only 12 weeks and can't get enough of it. I'm very pleased with my work. I just love your channel. I will keep watching and view past episodes.
Round 3: You don't eat the wool and even if you did, it doesn't come from a dead sheep. My point is that shearing is detrimental to the good health of the animal. I've been raising sheep for over 30 years, needle felting since the 90's and own a wool mill.
Personally I don't have a problem with wool, I'm not vegan myself, but I accept that some vegans would not use sheep's wool as they are against the use of animals for clothing or any purpose, even though, as you say, it comes from live sheep. Thanks for watching
@@juliesfeltedfriends somehow that was my instinct on your take, but I always jump at the opportunity to state the facts of shearing a sheep. Thank you for the opportunity!

Oh no! the needles are very brittle aren't they! I always use a needle felting mat and have to give my full attention so that I don't stab myself 😊 Thanks for watching
hack: before printing a reference picture, scale your document to 100% on your computer. you can now accurately use a ruler on your screen.
What a great idea, many thanks for this, I'll do this next time 😊 thanks for watching and sharing this hack 👍
