I got to see Larry play a few times. It was like he had eyes in the back of his head and could see 10 seconds into the future. He was the most game intelligent player I've ever seen.

The 5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit. Great video. The night before that game against the Pacers when he fractured his cheek on the floor he'd spent in the hospital in traction. He broke it in 85 building his mom's driveway. He still played 7 more years. There is a second video about the 4 times he was hurt but showed male toughness. All the injuries are mind blowing.

Magic Johnson WAS Larry’s rival, but also eventual friend. I recommend you watch Courtship of Rivals to see the story of these two very special people & how they have been connected by destiny since their College days.

yeah, that documentary really spells out the rivalry that saved the NBA, one of the greatest NBA rivalries of all time. Magic and Bird started competing in college, and met in some of, IMO, the best Finals series between Magic's Lakers, and Bird's Celtics. There was some aloofness from Bird towards any opposing player, including Magic especially early on in their careers for sure, but it wasn't personal. But he was an all out competitor whose goal was to win, whatever it took. But eventually, the respect for one another as players grew and turned into a friendship that lasts to this day, all because they were thrust together to do a commercial! Never got the chance to see Bird play in person, but I watched him on television whenever I had the chance. His IQ was off the charts. Anyways, no more spoilers, if you get the chance, check the documentary out, IMO, it's well worth your time.

When he fell...he was already playing hurt. He injured his back years before and had to be in a fiberglass cast to stretch his back into alignment before every game. He was in pain before the fall. The concussion just added to it. Not to mention Chuck Persons (#45) of the Pacers, the team the Celtics are playing against, elbowed him in the back after he returned. He did have double vision and had to wear special goggles for the next few games. A warrior to be sure.
On a side note, I always get a chuckle seeing little baby Reggie Miller playing. This game is ironic in so many ways. For Split, Reggie Miller is the guy on the video at the beginning saying that "Larry is the biggest trash talker, ever!" Reggie was a volumous trash talker. The ironic part is Larry would later coach the Pacers for 3 years, near the end of Reggie's career.

"A pure showcase of what skill looks like." You said it perfectly my friend- Larry Bird was a walking Masterclass in how to play basketball. He was FEARED by the legends of the day-who are still legends- and IMO has yet to be equalled as an all-around player. Larry Legend.

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were rivals since college and literally saved the NBA. When they entered the NBA playoff games were being tape-delayed. Shown at like 2:00 am timeslots because there was no prime time audience. Once they joined the NBA their play and rivalry revived the league - the interest soared. . . .there's a great documentary called "A Courtship of Rivals" about them that's well worth watching. Enjoy!

By the reckoning of most fans, Michael Jordan is easily the best player ever. But, making the case for Bird, consider the following:
Both Jordan and Bird joined teams which had been horrible the year previous. Bird improved his squad by 32 wins (61W-21L) his rookie season. His team went to the playoff semifinal. For reference, NBA playoffs are played as 5-7 game series, rather than one-off single elimination.
Jordan's first year, he improved the Bulls by nine games. They were eliminated in the first round, by the Celtics with Bird. They didn't win a single game.
By the end of Bird's sixth season, he had won three NBA championships, and been declared the finals Most Valuable Player twice.
Jordan didn't win his first championship until his sixth season. He never won a single playoff game, much less a series, against Bird. In all games, including scheduled season fixtures, he had an overall losing record to Bird.
Finally, and perhaps this is most telling... In 1988, Jordan was the season scoring leader and had been named the league MVP. It was his first season playing with a man named Scottie Pippen, a Hall of Fame player in his own right. Pippen complemented Jordan's game perfectly.
Jordan's Bulls played 4 scheduled fixtures against Bird's Celtics that year. By that point, Bird's body was breaking down. He played the season with bone spurs in both ankles, and a compression fracture of the spine.
With Jordan at his physical peak, playing the best basketball in the league, and paired with the man who would later help him win six NBA Championships, Bird beat him three out of four times, AND matched his personal statistical output.
Imagine if Messi were still the Messi we all know, but he had never beaten Ronaldo, and would never win anything until Ronaldo left the league. Would we still consider him the greatest player of his generation? Honestly, I don't think I would do so.
*THAT* is how good Larry Bird was.

for me on a buzzer beater I would take Bird, but at their peak in a Game, I would take MJ, but I for sure think Larry is worthy GOAT conversation candidate, I get the Bird vs MJ in terms of the league itself and their match ups and that is a very strong point for Bird to be honest, but I would also say that the Bulls really started to get stronger around the time Larry retired, and the bulls minus MJ were nothing when going up against the Celtics , the Celtics minus Bird would still smash up the Bulls minus MJ, but I do think the head to head is a good one for Bird as it automatically keeps him in the conversation (and then there is all the other things he did)
I personally for the record think Maradona is the greatest Football (soccer) player of all time, and in Basket Ball I think its MJ, but like in football I am not mad at anyone for saying Messi is the Goat, I get why they might, I feel the same abut Bird, I dont have him as the Goat, but I totally get why some people would, and he might the only player I have seen that was as clutch, possibly more clutch then MJ, and that is saying something, For me the greatest has to be a lot of things, and both MJ and Bird were enough of those things to possibly be the GOAT (just like Pele, Maradona and Messi). This is part of the problem though with GOAT debates, it's not just positions and different era's, its different definition's of what the Goat is, is it the most clutch?, the best scorer?, the most successful in trophies?, the most Pleasing game to watch? the best team player? the most skilful player? etc etc etc etc

Yes, Larry was very, very, very good. There are other players who've done some of what he has, who occasionally pull off similar plays. Behind the backboard shots have been done by maybe 4 players (Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, Bird), and Curry has some amazing three-pointers, and some other players like Kidd and Nash and Magic have great assists. But Larry is pretty unique in that he's done all of that, and Larry has some things that are absolutely unique. And he has a ton of grit and perseverance (lacking in the league today).

11:15. I am not sure that you are aware of Magic Johnson (#32 in yellow). His rivalry with Larry Bird saved the NBA in the late 1980s. Larry Bird (and the Boston Celtics) won 3 NBA Championships & Magic Johnson and the Lakers won 4 Championships. Bird & Johnson are NBA Hall of Famers & probably Top 50 for All Time Players.

After watching this video yet again, I think Larry Bird might be the 2nd best player in NBA Basketball History:
    #5) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
    #4) Kobe Bryant
    #3) LeBron James
    #2) Larry Bird
    #1) Michael Jordan
Each time I see this highlight pack, it just seems like Larry gets better and better each time. I couldn't put him ahead of MJ because Michael Jordan has a 6 point lead in ppg during the Regular Season and a 10 point lead in ppg during the NBA Playoffs. MJ also has a 6-2 lead in Finals MVPs. Larry is down 10 to nothing in Scoring Titles and it's just too lopsided. Michael has won 6 Championships and Larry won 3. For those reasons, for me, Larry Bird is the 2nd best player all-time in NBA History.
