  • One of the most popular houseplants around is the Peace Lily. We all love it, and its beautiful white flowers. However, even though it may be one of the easier plants to care for as a beginner, it can still be a little bit tricky. In this video, I will show you the steps to caring for your new Peace Lily like a pro, and give you some info on what kind to get if you haven't been able to decide yet! As always, thanks for watching and don't forget to always Plant Prudently!

    Great video!! You covered all the bases! One thing...my brother passed away 32 years ago and I STILL HAVE THE PEACE LILY FROM HIS FUNERAL! I love it so much! It's doing really well! I pulled it out if its pot last fall and gave it new dirt. I was so nervous! It seemed to struggle for a month or so, but then took off! Its flowered twice since then! It's just so beautiful! 🌱🍃🌿

    I just received a peace lily after my sons passing 3 weeks ago and I need to make sure to keep it alive. He loved these plants and always laughed at how I could not keep a plant alive. This video was very helpful as I never knew I needed to clean the leaves. Thank you very much. I now know that I need to use distilled water, clean the leaves and fertilize every few weeks. I'm so sorry for your loss. Just to be extra sure you have no questions or doubt at all on how best to care for your plant, I'll tell you what I know. Light, just bright shade. They can take some direct sunlight but not for long. The flowers can be used sort of like a light gauge. If you have bright white flowers then your plant is getting the right amount of light. If they are coming up greenish then I would give them a little bit brighter light. If you don't see any at all then I would slowly increase the light again, over time. The leaves can and will burn quick. I have mine sitting in an east facing window so it can get ample morning light and then protection from the sun during the hotter parts of the day. You could do a west or south facing window but I'd scoot it back some, like 2 feet or so. Also a curtain may help too. Water, you got that part right on the nose, the leaves are pretty sensitive and I find distilled water keeps the brown tips and other discolorations away. The leaves will sort of "deflate" when they need more water. The trick is to try and water them before they deflate. But as always there can be too much of a good thing and root rot will occur if you water to liberally. Humidity is very important too, ideally they enjoy around 50%. Now you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a temperature and humidity monitor for around 12 bucks and it will tell you both for any given room. I bought a little humidifier for mine, some people freak when they hear that word. If you do buy one get one without a filter, and clean it once a week with distilled white vinegar. You could also use a pebble tray or spray bottle. Feeding was the only thing I'd say to watch out for. They aren't heavy feeders. If you feed them more than once a month, it's way too much. Really if you feed once a month you should dilute it some. Every other month would be better. Their systems can't process a lot of nutrients so if you do feed too much fertilizer salts can build to a toxic level. I hope all this helps and if you do have any questions just let me know!

    I received this beautiful Peace Lilly after our beautiful mother's transition (passed). Her Love for plants made me love plants, Out of the plants she received this is one of the plants I'm having a hard time with. I always watched her take care of plants and she was good at it, we always had plants in the house as children. I felt I was taught well until I received this Peace Lilly, After looking at your video I now know to use Distilled water (I was using Tap water from Sink, Warm), Good soil (Miracle Grow), Keep the Dust Off them, Take a Damp cloth and Wipe off leaves with Distilled water, and Lemon, Keep in the shaded area, away from windows. I'm in Pennsylvania, the plant is in my mother's bedroom. I was giving the plant Tap water every week on a Thursday, or Friday, That Is going to Change. I just gave it some distilled water as I write this to you. Your Video showed me a lot. Thank you So Much For this video. I pray I can bring this beautiful plant back to where it was in the beginning, More Beautiful. Again Thank you for your video, Much Needed Information. I am learning. I understand that these days are different from yesterday, And we have to adapt even with plants.

      That's too cool! I'm glad to see that there is still some peace lily love out there. Seems like most ppl either don't like that one or maybe it was the video? I'm not sure. I thought and still think its a great plant. Remember a couple years ago when people were putting a Bettas inside a clear vase and then sitting a plant in the top part of the vase and letting the roots just grow in the water? One good plant you could do that with or just grow hydroponically is the peace lily. Don't get me wrong it's wrong to keep a fish in that small amount of water but the plant in the vase of water growning that way still looks cool without a fish. At the other end of the spectrum I totally long to own a sensation peace lily one day, once I have more room. They get up to 6ft tall and have 20 in leaves!

      Yes Kentucky is known for a lot of things, beautiful rolling hills, pretty houses with white picket fences, horses, bourbon, basketball and our hard water. Over half of our water supply comes from limestone rocks that usually make the bourbon taste better but it can wreak havoc on our plants. I learned that the hard way a couple years ago and ever since then I've always tried to use distilled or filtered water. The only kind of filter water that removes sediment and chemicals is Zero water and that can be pretty expensive. Meijer and Walmart typically have distilled water on sale for about $0.84 a gallon.

I have to make more changes with the Winter coming. My Hubby moved it from the kitchen to the bay window in the living-room😥It's drooping now. I've seen several tips today so my work is cut out for me to save this beauty...lol

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, let me start by saying I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, I know the sentiments that we can place on plants especially if they are attached to the memory of a loved one. Fortunately, mine is doing very well because I got mine from my father's funeral, so if I lost it I would be pretty upset. When it comes to Spathiphyllums they need as bright indirect light that you can provide. Established plants can take some direct sunlight though not for long. The leaves will burn, quickly. I have mine in an east-facing window. This provides it with plenty of morning sunlight and then protects it from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Typically growers will enlist the help of artificial to grow lights. You want about a very bright shade for a good amount of time. Full-spectrum LED grow lights will provide them with the right frequency for the proper duration. There have been some major advancements in the development of grow lights in the last decade. They are no longer expensive to purchase or to run. If you are interested in that check out the link in my description box of any of my newer videos and you can get the ones I use on my orchids and bonsai. This will come in handy too with the onset of winter. Now with water, these guys are average drinkers. During the growing months (and this is subjective) I water mine about 3-4 cups every 5-8 days or so. During the cold months, you should slow it fairly drastically. I typically do the same amount but every 3 or 4 weeks. The plant will tell you when it needs water by drooping its leaves. Ideally, you want to water it before it does that though. When they begin to droop constantly problems can occur. With the soil, you want something rich and that drains well. You never want the plant to sit in standing water. If your pot has a saucer under it drain the excess water away after about 20 minutes. The soil pH is best around 5.8-6.5, slightly acidic. Peace lilys aren't heavy feeders. I only feed mine once every other month. Their systems can't process a bunch of nutrients so if you feed frequently the extra sits in the soil and builds up to toxic levels. Any reputable fertilizer should suffice. I hope this helps and if you have any questions at all just let me know! Plant Prudently!

      Yes, I will always have a peace lily in my home. They're so pretty and simple and helpful. I want a Spathiphyllums 'sensation' those get really large. Bout 6 ft tall with a 6ft spread. Leaves can get up 20 inches long. However I do worry I said to feed too much. Spathiphyllums aren't heavy feeders at all. They can't process nutrients very fast so if you are feeding more than once a month it's way too much. Now I did say if you feed every month you should dilute it down, but feeding every other month or so is better.

    My peace lily (same type as yours) is still going strong four years after I bought it! Although I haven't left it in its original pot, i'v split it up so now I have six of them (soon to be eight as two 'babies' have sprouted from the main plant). All of them happy and growing, although none have flowered since I bought it. I was unaware of tap water not being too good for them so that might be why. Thank you for the lovely and informative video!

The ones you pulled out look a bit like what I mean but mine are darker maybe if I left them they would be the same light brown. It is important for me to take care of it as it was given to me when my daughter passed away.

The top soil feels dry so I water it, it is not in a pot with drainage so maybe the bottom soil is too wet? I do use tap water to water the plant, but will start letting the water sit for a couple days before using it. I’m so glad I watched this video! I’m new to plants and always thought they just needed water and sunlight! No wonder my other plants died 😫 didn’t realize they needed food! I got two peace Lily’s for Mother’s Day (one big and one medium) and noticed one of the white flowers turned brown so I put them outside a few mins ago (it’s night) so they could get a little rain! I will bring them in first thing in the morning now that I know that they don’t like direct sun. I’ll get them some food tomorrow, I also have a snake plant but I know that they don’t like much water, so I didn’t put that one outside. How often should I give the snake plant food? Will miracle grow work for both?

    T thank you so much your video was so very informative I have watched so many videos on peace lilies because I have searched and searched looking for a peace lily and I finally found two I found a red one and I found a white one. And my son laughed at me because he said I acted like a little kid with a new toy. And I am a woman in her 60s. So you can imagine the fun he had teasing me he's in his 30s. But you gave me more information than any of these so-called experts. And I so appreciate everything that you said everybody else was so wishy-washy some said give him a lot of light some said give them no light some said put them in a big pot some said put them in a small pot they were very contradicting you were so matter-of-fact and sure of everything that you said I appreciate you more than you will ever know I subscribed and push the button for the Bell I'm not very computer savvy but I will definitely be getting notified of your videos I hope you continue to put out more I love my plan my house looks like a jungle and I love learning more about them everyday they teach me I hate it when one of them dies I've only lost one and it haunts me my absolute favorite plant in the world is Coleus because it's an outdoor plant and an indoor plant I bought some this summer that had mildew all over them they were dying the lady gave me to Big Flats of them for $1 she said she was going to throw them away and I have so many huge coleus now from that one flat. @TheGreenAlchemist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's mostly for brown leaf tips and the occasional brown leaf. If you find that yours has more brown leaves check its location. I had mine what I thought was far enough away from a mostly closed vent. I scooted him further away and I noticed he's not losing too many leaves now. Also consider the windows it's close to. Too much light will cause leaves to brown and with the cold spurt we had recently it could do it too. If it's not that and you do switch to distilled water, then I'd check the humidity. Mine is close to the humidifier and he loves it there.

    I have one of the big versions of the Peace Lily. A neighbor gave it to me I guess partly as a gift but also it was a big plant. It was growing wider and I placed it outside. Then the leaves started to welt and I watched you video. So, I think part of it is from too much sun. It's trunk either got wind damage or is malnourished for I haven't fertilized it. I cut all the brown parts and have tied all the trunks together to it isn't just totally slumped to the ground with bent stems. The leaves are still dark green at core and the plant is trying to live but it looks very sad compared to when I first got it. Maybe the plant is 3-5 years old already and near death but I am trying to care for it back to life. I wont let it be outside anymore and I fertilized it and will water it. but it is hard to tell when it needs water for the stems are wind or severly malnourished and already bent and slump over.

    • @TheGreenAlchemist
      @TheGreenAlchemist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully we can save the plant! So with light they like bright filtered light. They do not like much direct sunlight. They could tolerate some though. Really you can use the flowers as a sort of light gauge. If it's producing pretty white flowers it's getting the right amount of light. If the flowers are green then they need a little bit better light. If there are no flowers at all then you should move it to a brighter location. Though do it SLOWLY. The leaves can and will burn. Also deadheading flowers will encourage more to pop up. With water, these are sensitive plants. Here in Kentucky we have very hard limestone rich water. I used distilled water on mine and this has helped with the leaf tips turning brown. Don't feed often. Because they are sensitive, if toxic salts build up from over feeding it wouldn't take long to kill the plant. I feed mine every other month and I dilute the fertilizer by about half. Yes, do not sit them by a drafty window or door or air vent. That's asking for trouble. They really don't like temps below about 50 °F. They will not survive a frost. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Plant prudently!

      Yes they will definitely benefit from the fresh soil and nutrients that comes with repotting. I've had mine for over two years and he's still in the same black pot that he came in. My mom bought her one from Lowe's that she's had closer to 4 years and it is also still in the same black pot that she bought it in and every spring we just add in a little fresh soil and they seem to be fine. We give them a once over too and if their roots are poking through we repot. So they could really go either way.

    Interesting about the different water types, there's so much to think about that I previously didn't even consider. I just use New Zealand tap water on my peace lily and it seems to be OK - I hope so, because I really don't like having to buy water packaged in plastic. Your peace lily looks beautiful - I am just about to repot mine into a bigger pot that's about the same size as your pot - I wasn't sure if it would be too big, but yours looks perfect and I want mine to grow to the same size as your peace lily. I will try adding 1/4 lemon juice to the water when I next clean the leaves - thanks for the tip :) You fertilise your plants a lot - I guess that would explain why your peace lily is flowering. Thanks for the video and info! LOVE your accent! Also, very sorry about your dad :( you still look so young to have lost your dad! Any reputable well balanced all purpose fertilizer like miracle grow or fox farm is sufficient. Be very careful though, Spathiphyllums are not heavy feeders. If you want to feed every month I would dilute it to one quarter strength. If you want to do every other month I would dilute it down to half. If you feed too much they won't process all the nutrients which will remain in the soil until they build up to a toxic level effectively killing your plant. I get mine at Walmart or Lowe's, both are cheap but Amazon has been nice too.

      How's the humidity in your home? Peace lilies like humidity around 50%. I ended up having to purchase a humidifier for mine and he loves it! I know that if the humidty is on the low end, especially out in the Texas sun, it can cause the the blooms to turn brown and not open. But I don't believe that would cause brown spots. Typically hard water causes brown spots or tips in the leaves. If you do suspect that your water is hard I would buy some distilled water for em. Spathiphyllums are very sensitive plants and do not do well with hard/soft water. However fungi can be the cause of brown spots. What I would do is go to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchase some copper fungicide and apply it to the next flower that develops brown spots.

    My peace lily just started to produce flowers and I'm so excited because I've never seen them before at least not on a houseplant this is my first peace lily I don't know if it's a dwarf or if it's a baby but obviously it's happy if it's getting flowers right? Peace lily is beautiful I'm afraid to get one so big because my Kitty already tries to chew on the leaves. Awesome video by the way and I also wanted to let you know great job on your new intro!

      I always get excited to see a comment from you. You always have to best things to say. I really appreciate it too! Yes I would say that your plant is pretty happy if it is producing flowers. Hopefully your cat won't chew on the plant bc is does contain calcium oxalates that can be fatal to some pets in high amounts. Fortunately this never gets to that point though bc it will make their mouths go numb and their throats hurt so they don't eat much. Thanks again for the comment on my new intro. I was hoping it was good! Plant Prudently!!

    Peace Lilly are amazing house plants and the flowers are generated by natural hormones that happen in the leaves, the main properties of the hormone is calcium and you can get this mineral from Broccoli or even the leaves of the plant. Just use a blender with broccoli or other plants or milk that produce calcium add with water and feed your plants with that mixture for best flowers. This is true of all living things you just need to find out which minerals are most important to a particular plant.

      Yes this is true. I learned about that in undergrad. Though the right conditions need to be met too. But yes if yours arent flowering I would definitely suggest adding in some of the trace minerals like calcium to help them out. Thanks for watching!

    Very helpful video! I love the 3 part water 1 part lemon juice mixture idea! I took my Peace Lily home from my Grandma's funeral back in 2004. Since then I've experienced a few flowers (I know they're not called flowers but hey I'm not the pro here haha but I'm so happy with myself for pruning my plant!) I never knew that these plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water so I'll be getting that Purified Water from now on :) Thanks again for this great video

      Thank you, I really appreciate that! Yes that is how I have cleaned all my plants (sensitive included) leaves for the past 10 years. I've never had a problem with it and use warm water too. That is very cool that you've had that plant for that long. Typically they don't live but about a decade though they will go longer especially if they are being cared for indoors. Let me know if you ever need any help or have questions. Plant prudently.

    Great video thank you! I've had my peace lilly for about a year but been struggling with fungus gnats. I put the yellow sticky things in the pot but is there a way I can get rid of them completely?

      Neem Oil. It's organic. I had fungus gnats in my plants and I sprayed wirh Neem Oil. But you need to do it soon because those gnats are eating up your plants roots so the sooner you treat it the better.

    I repotted my peace lily in bigger pot in organic miracle grow soil but it smells like fungus. Also used singles liquid fertilizer since I got this plant from Publix. Peace lily is not growing taller. I had it a month now. Leave tips are brown too. Not sure what else to do. Should I replant in better soil. This plant is a medium height that will grow 36in per the info that came with it. Always thank you for yr video.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I am sorry for your loss. It is though. However taking care of your peace lily shouldn't be. This plant likes bright shade. I have mine in an east facing window so he'll get bright morning light and then protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day. You can basically use the flowers as a light gauge. If you have pretty bright white flowers then your plant is getting the right amount of light. If your plants flowers are a greenish hue then your plant probably needs to be moved to a slightly brighter location. But be warned, do it slowly. Your plants leaves will burn and burn easily. If there are no flowers at all then your plant isn't getting adequate light. Another nice thing about these plants is their leaves will tell you when your plant needs water. One day it will be fine and the next it will look like it got too cold and died back. Just give it water and it will perk back up. Never expose it to temps below 55 degrees and they will not survive freezing. If you feed it a general all purpose fertilizer that should be ok for them but don't feed em too much. Salts and other sediments will build up in them and can kill your plant. People often over feed their peace lily and they typically don't recover. I feed mine about once a month in the growing season and then stop in August. Around then I'll flood my peace lily's with a good amount of water to run out any of that salt and other sediments that build up. During the winter months you should drastically cut back your watering and only give it to your plant when it needs it. Check your water too. Here in Kentucky we have a lot of hard water and that is not good for sensetitive plants like a peace lily. I used distilled water bc it is clean of chemicals and other addetitives that can mess them up. Soft water is bad too bc a lot of salt is used to soften up the water. Filtered water except for zerowater still leaves chemicals like chlorine and flouride that can cause your plants leaves some trouble. Let me know if you have any questions or any problems! Plant Prudently!
