GE Filter Flo, small load, cold dark

  • By request! This is my GE Filter Flo washing a small load of darks on the regular cycle and cold. A little info on the washer (or why it looks like it does), I got it last year and it needed some TLC. Transmission leaked oil everywhere, lower seal didn't hold water, and there was much mineral build-up. In other words, very well used! :)
    My little nephew loves this thing and likes to take the filter pan and agitator cap off and put them back on. Somewhere in the process, the cap got lost. Then I noticed that the agitator was slipping on the shaft, so I ordered a replacement part and, being too impatient to find out if there was a "correct" way to replace it, I broke out the top of the agitator to knock the faulty part out of there. That's why it looks like it does. If I still had the cap, I could hide it. :)
    Anyway, enjoy the splashiness of a small load! It's hard to keep the camera dry!

    Fantastic Video... Loved watching my mother's Agitator Washer when I was and and still do and still do on these videos.. Old school top load agitator washers are still the best. Niche better than the H.E. Crap Washers today...

      I agree it would sell out.. These newer models are made to conserve water according to regulations and water restrictions. The new washers don't compare to any of the old washers .You cant effectively clean clothes using little to no water

    Fantastic!!! Not enough videos are made of washers using the 'small' water level. The high ramp Activator turns the load over just as good with small level.

    Why am I not surprised how fast suspended stuff starts collecting in the filter? Why did the manufacturers ever do away with lint filters? The circulating pump could improve the lackluster performance of the current crap crop of HE top-loaders by putting more water through the clothes.

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      5610winston with traditional top loaders, they did away with the recirculating lint filters, because not everyone used them the way they were supposed to be used. Many users also didn't like cleaning them. Then you have an extra pump on most models, and it was something else to go out on them. So they switched to the self cleaning lint filters, that circulated the lint underneath the tub, then flushed it down the drain. Front loaders don't have a lint filter on their washers, that it stays on the clothes, well into the drying cycle. Sometimes it doesn't come off in the dryer either.

      If you still have this washer, I'd like to hear it run with the minibasket inside with the machine on the small load size with the lid shut on the normal speed. Not the machine's minibasket setting, but the small load size please. Thank you.

    I love this washer, i wonder if there's one with a deeper tub, i think i've seen a couple, my aunt used to have a washer just like this, and my mom did too, i really am hoping to get a washer like this for when i have my own place. or a roper heavy duty super capacity washer. with duel agitator. :)

      This is the larger capacity model. There was a smaller one but the extra large capacity was the biggest GE ever made of this style.

      This series did not have the deeper tubs. That was the only reason I never got one of these type of washers. GE completely redesigned their washers in 1996, and dropped the recirculation pump, in favor of a self cleaning lint filter, where it flushed it down the drain. The first series were total junk, because they used so much plastic, that the brake mechanism broke on those models , and once broke, nothing could fix the problem after that
      GE didn't contact me about my defective washer, and only found out 2 years after the problem came up, and had to junk the washer. I switched to a front loader, when all the washers had those dual agitators on them, and I hate them. Give me a simple back and forth type agitator in one piece.

      @@terrorblossom4829 I had the dual agitator top loader washer, and it tore up my clothes. Instead of a simple back and forth motion, it simply twisted down by the corkscrew portion, then back and forth from the bottom portion. It was a Kenmore washer made by Whirlpool. The low end Kenmore washers back in the 90's had a simple one piece agitator that I wished was on the model I had. Due to the constant twisting the agitator did, it also went off balance everytime. Unlike older models that shut off the spin if it went off balance, that feature was removed from Kenmore washers starting with the redesigned 1987 models. So the constant off balances eventually damaged the shell of the tub, that it gushed water out of the machine. That was when I decided that I would never own a dual agitator washer again. I only wished when I bought my Hotpoint washer, and later gas dryer, that back in 1996, that I could have gotten a more reliable washer and dryer, by buying Amana. Until I believe 1998, Amana washers were simply Speed Queen washers, as they looked alike in every form. A few people I came across who got Amana washers then, still have them today. 1999 I believe was when when Amana became a Maytag brand, and was based off the system used by Magic Chef and Norge. Since I made the wrong choice in 1996, I had to get a new washer in 1999, but I made the right choice, as the front loader I got was still working, but was about to quit working in 2012. It also got my clothes clean, and used anywhere from 18 gallons for the lightest fabric, up to 27 gallons for the heaviest and thickest fabrics. It was about the size of a typical European front loader, but was an American made front loader, under the Frigidaire name (prior to 1996, they were under then sister name, White Westinghouse). It washed a load of clothes on average 40 minutes, with the heavy cycle adding just 10 additional minutes. It had a wash, spray rinse while draining the wash water, and 3 short rinses, with a spin in-between. It was the best front loader I ever owned. The LG I have is ok now, but when I got it, it sucked at washing clothes, as there was no water on most of the clothes. I had to hack it, and literally had to void the warranty, just so it used more water. Since I used front loaders before HE detergent was ever made available, I did what the manufacturer of my first front loader put in the manual, and that was whatever the directions were for top loaders, you used half the amount. If it was the classic 1 cup formula, it was ½ cup. Most liquids back in 1999 was ½ cup for top loaders, but front loaders used ¼ cup, and that was to prevent oversudding the washer. HE detergent didn't become available in my area until 2001, and it was expensive. Tide liquid and powder was priced at $12 back then, while Wisk was $10 then, while the regular version was much less. Cost didn't go down until 2008, when it was priced the same. But I already had a bad experience with HE Tide, because the bottle said HE, but I got regular. Either the wrong bottles were used, or Proctor and Gamble didn't empty and clean out the tank holding regular detergents, before switching to HE. For 2021, it still bothers me that Proctor and Gamble still insists on making 2 versions of Tide and Gain, when the competition makes one version, and it says HE compatible on their bottles, meaning it's simply low sudsing.

      Better parts too. I got one of their crappy top loaders from 1996, under the Hotpoint name, and it was junk almost 3 years later. The tub would not lock down, even after it was fixed 3 times. While it had the self cleaning lint filter, I had to constantly change the lint traps on the hose, because it filtered out too much at once (unlike this washer, my old Hotpoint had large holes on the tub. I have since switched to front loaders, because by 1999, nearly all top loaders had those dual agitators on them, and I hate them.

      The GE filter flo is my favorite washer..from the 50"s thru the 90's. We had a TOL 1986, lasted 22 years with only 2 belt changes and 1 complete clutch replacement. Then trans went and leaked oil. They were great workhorses. Then we went to front loader, top loaders are terrible.

    • @rwindiana
      @rwindiana  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to disassemble the transmission to add oil. I used gear oil (you'll probably use a whole quart of it). It's worth a shot, but if your transmission seized, you may need a new one.

      Well I'm not real sure, I would just use my own judgment I guess. Is the motor and belt running? Does the machine do anything at all - spin or agititate? Might be best to take the transmission apart and look at it. Perhaps the belt is slipping because of all the oil leaked onto it. I also had to replace the lower seal on mine because that's where the oil was leaking.

    • @WilliePeck
      @WilliePeck 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mor runs I think it needs new bearings though. The pump spins and the belt doesn't. If you put it in spin and force the tub to spin it will go and will not brake. If you put it in agitate the drum will spin a little like its made to do and the agitator will move very slowly in one direction but not the other. I think it just needs oil and a new seal because it will do the cycles but with help. And if you help it agitate it will but slowly.
