    An elderly gentleman that I listened to would press a chopstick size stick right beside the plant stem. His logic was the worm would not attack the plant as it would wrap around both the plant stem and stick. Feeling the hard stick would cause the worm to move along. Ive never tried it. Just getting starting myself. It was the only method he used.

    I usually use toiletpaper rolls, cut in half so I get two protectors from each roll. I save them all winter and place them as soon as the plants emerge. I also read that drinking straws work well, with a slit in one side. Usually they only eat my peas but this year cutworms are not picky in my garden. They have eaten tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, beans, peas and peppers.

      Oh no, I hope they left some plants for you. Thank you for the great ideas for protectors!

    I love, love, love your information. I discovered three cutworms or grubs in my( bok choy and broccoli) winter garden. I was getting ready to tear down my broccoli because it is spring and time for me to plant my summer garden (tomatoes). Holy moly, there were several cutworms found last night in the dirt.
    If we use toilet paper rolls, newspaper rolls, plastic cups, toothpicks, etc., aren't the grubs/cutworms still in the ground? Is there a natural way to get rid of them besides using our neighbor's chickens?

    Put tin foil around stem. This works for me. Keep all leaves off ground. Sprinkle hot pepper 🌶 powder on ground at base of plant.

    What works for me is I take 2 nails (I used roofing nails) put one nail on each side of the stem.. It prevents the cut worm from climbing and wrapping around the stem to eat it, which cut the plant... It's quick, you plant your plant then pop in 2 nails done..

    very nice video...
    some say corn meal feeds and kills cutworms but idk will try...i made collars by chopping ribbed drain hose about 3" to see how that does this year...collars cut from pizza boxes is good too...already lost a few plants so here goes!

    You have any ideas on squash vine boarers..they literally get as.big as.my fist here...we had zero hard freeze this year again so they are atill sround and s unbelievable size...i have NEVER EVER SEEN THEM THIS BIG IN MY 70 YEARS...AND I BEEN GROWING FOR MOST OF IT....BUT USUALLY FLOWERS.

    I'm new to your channel..I used horse manure on my garden and when I had it tested(because nothing was growing) the result was that my phosphorous was off the charts. I now have to add 15-0-15 to my garden to bring it back. How is yours doing so well? I'm just curious. Love your videos!

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmm, I wonder if it has anything to do with the horses' diet. Also, if you use fresh manure, it produces a lot of heat during composition and will burn plants. We try to bring in the manure either in the fall or very early spring (April) so we have ample time to rototill it in. It also gets rained on many times before we plant (end of May to early June).

    The Best practice is to sterilized soil by pouring boiling water before the transplanting when the soil is cold. another is mulching it with carbonized rice hull

    I left a pile of weeds a few days. When i went to burn the pile i pushed it over to find almost 100 cutworms. I flame weeds with propane torch so 🔥 it was. Lost almoat all of our beans. And some corn. Will only plant treated seed from now on.

    i use skewers cut bout 6 inches long. 2 per plant one on each side of the stem they cant wrap around the stem to chew it :) less work to do to alot of plants

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What?. . Salt kills plants too, so not so great advice, Epsom salt, not table or sea salt is OK

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have heard the salt trick, too. I'm not sure how much harm it will do to the plants. We salt our sidewalk in the winter, and the runoff doesn't kill our grass (or weeds). Lol

    Take a toilet paper roll and cut it into two pieces.Take half and put it over your plant, pushing the tp roll into the dirt a little bit to surround the stem.

    You can put toothpicks on each side of plant stem so cutworms can’t curl around stem

    i've seen cutworms on leaves ... are you going to wrap the whole plant? it's not effective

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make sure the leaves are not too close to the ground so they can't climb up. I've never seen any on the leaves. And yes, wrapping the stems has been effective for us.
