Three Cheap EF to EF-M lens adaptors Andoer. Meike and Kooka for Canon Mirrorless M5/M6/M50 etc

  • Sorry for update so quickly, but I ended up buying an Andoer adaptor so wanted to include this in comparison.
    The original Canon EF to EF-M adaptors are incredibly expensive, so I wanted to look at the cheap generic versions to compare, I bought these on ebay, Meike MK-C-AF4, Kooka KK-EM01A, and after I had refund for the Kooka version, I saw Andoer Auto Mount Adapter EF-EOSM cheap from a UK seller, so bought that to add to original comparison, hence this update video.
    I've also seen these on amazon and am sure you can find them in other sellers across the world
    The cheaper adaptors have a little play between lens and adapter (not body and adapter which were both really solid), the Kooka has so much play the AF contacts are intermittent, but the Meike and Andoer worked fine with several lens both EF and EF-S I tested.
    Andoer is an exact copy of the Canon version, metal bodied and has registration marks for EF/EF-S on face and side, and EF-M mark on end so I prefer it, however the Meike adaptor works perfectly, and for a smaller EosM body which you use a tripod often, the moulded tripod mount is less obtrusive on the Meike adapter, than the Andoer removable tripod mounting block.
    Original video is here • Two Cheap EF to EF-M l...
    Hope this is useful.

    I watched this video because I was looking to see if the cheaper adapters worked well. , which was great and I got the details. I actually have the M5 camera(just back from canon service) and have recently got myself the Canon 70-300mm IS USM, which would benefit on having a camera mount. So putting the 70-300mm IS USM onto an adaptor which has a tripod or monopod mount would be vey useful. So that's the reason why?
    Also have photog friends who mount bigger lenses than this on their M5's and they don't all come with a tripod mount, so yes it is useful lol.
    Thanks for an informative look at these adapters.

    I have found that the tripod mount is there because many EF and EF-S lenses are wider and you can't use the regular camera tripod mount because the lens barrels hang lower than the bottom of the camera. I use a Meike brand adapter.

      @@YehoshuaAS I've used the Viltrox speedbooster a few times, it does give wider view/aperture, but the focus I find is inconsistent, I used it with Canon 50mm F1.4 at weekend and about half the shots were slightly out of focus, which is annoying, using the standard adaptors the focus is perfect with same lens. Having said that I still think its worth having the speedbooster if you have EF lenses as it effectively gives you two focal length choices for every lens, which is nice and for the price well worth it. I have the 28/1.8, 50/1.4/85/1.8 lenses, so effectively the speedbooster gives me a choice of these native focal lengths with one faster F stop, or using the standard adaptor I have 1.6x versions of those focal lengths as well, so the cost of speedbooster is a bargain for these three 'extra' lens options it gives me. Speedbooster does have major flaring issues with any light from side/front, and the focus issues are annoying though.

    What about canon adopter? Is there wobble/play between the adopter and the lens or adopter and the body?

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a tiny bit of movement between both lens and body on the Canon adapter, but not enough to ever be an issue, I think the only reason I picked up on this is that the Kooka was the first one I tried which had the AF problem caused by excessive play - with any of the other adapters, in normal use the play is never an issue, as you mount the lens and then don't really twist back and forth either on lens or adapter when using normally, so I wouldn't worry about it.

    Do you have any Yongnuo lenses by chance? Have you tested them with the adapters? I have a Yongnuo 100mm f/2 which worked great for my 7DII, but it won't auto focus on the M5 which is what I use now. I thought all these adapters and such were electronically all the same, but a in Christopher Frost's review of the Yongnuo 100mm f/2, he had some inconsistencies with the lens between a Canon M3 and EOS R with adapters and normal DSLR. It actually auto focused for him on one of the cameras. Was just wondering if you could test the AF compatibility with these adapters and any Yongnuo lens(es) you might have. I might try a different adapter if it means I get to use this lens fully again. Manual focus is alright, but obviously not ideal. Thanks

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry Graesen I don't have any Yongnuo lenses, I did have one Sigma lens (50mm F1.4) which was lovely, but would occasionally lock up M5 (had to switch off/on to resolve, or even pull battery), which was annoying, so I traded it for the Canon 50mm F1.4, so I only have Canon lenses now. I'd be very surprised if there was any difference between any of these adapters and the Canon genuine adapter, as they are just pass through connectors, I think more likely is a firmware/compatibility issue between the Yongnuo lens and M5 - might be worth checking with Yongnuo as don't know if those lenses have updatable firmware or this is a known issue. I do find it annoying that Canon seem to make life harder, the coded batteries for M5 is a real annoyance and Canon battery prices are crazy, I much prefer having the choice of whatever battery I choose. Hope you find an answer.

      @@jamesb72 Thanks. I have a couple of Sigma lenses too and no issues with them so far. I had contacted Yongnuo and they stated the lens does not support AF via Live View which stopped my inquiry. Also, the Canon version is not capable of updating firmware for some reason (they have that ability on Nikon version). Anyway... it was that Chris Frost video I saw that sparked my curiousity again... if it doesn't work with Live View, then why did it on that video with a different camera? And Frost used different adapters and got different results. But yes, I also understood the adapters to just be passthrough too - but Viltrox's speed booster has a USB port for firmware updates too - unclear why if it's just passthrough, but perhaps to update EXIF data reporting?

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd be 99% sure if the Mieke adapter doesn't work with non-Canon lenses, then none of the other adapters would work either as they are all just pass through connection, you could always take lens to a camera store and try with their canon adapter to check before buying anything. There is a camera setting (under Custom Functions 2 Others 'release shutter w/o lens' I believe may vary with model) which might be worth trying (but may not work for aperture so maybe only manual aperture lenses), otherwise it will just be a compatibility issue between that specific lens and body. Canon I'm sure would only have designed to support their own lenses.

      You cannot use EF-M lens on T3i, there is no possible way to make an adaptor as it would have to take 26mm off the lens or camera, so would need a hacksaw/angle grinder ! Best send the EF-M lens back, or buy an EF-M body. Sorry, there is no way to mount an EF-M lens onto a DSLR body, as the flange distance would have to be negative - it only works the other way round as without DSLR mirror, the EF-M camera just needs a spacer to make up the gap to sensor to match what EF/EF-S lenses are designed for.

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a tricky question, they certainly look OK to me but I mostly take family/action pics, so centre focus is perfect for me, and focus on edges is not critical, then again landscapes etc would be small apertures so I suspect would be fine also, the only problem I can see would be if the tubes were not straight so focus could shift across the sensor (ie top to bottom or edge to edge depending where it varied), but I don't have a calibrated test screen to check this properly, I just used some vernier calipers to check them, and bizarrely the Meike measures perfectly same depth all the way round, but the Canon and Andoer have a slight variation (0.1mm approx), however I am measuring the outside edge of the flange, where there is a groove on the body side, which is the critical point, and I can't measure that. I think my answer would be for vast majority of use the cheap adaptors would be perfectly fine, if your taking specific architectural or other pics where you want large aperture edge to edge focus then maybe do your own checks - for the price it would be worth testing the cheaper adaptor first, even if you ended up buying the canon one, you could ebay the cheaper one and get most of your money back anyway. Hope that helps.

    Another cheap Chinese product that don't work like Canon.
