Back in the day, the right click was a complement of the hero, not the main source. Now you use spells mostly as a mean to hit. Look at his items and figure for yourself. No octarine, blink or refresher, but a Daedalus and a Pike.
Invoker was never a pure spellcaster. Just analyse his kit and it's obvious, 2 physical DPS steroids (alacrity and -armor), invis, two spells that are pure damage, rest are a mix of utility and damage. Back in the day you had stuff like medallion drums exort invoker. He always hit hard, he had 4.7 dmg per lvl before universal with 14 dmg innate from exort with +dmg from exort. He was a "pure spellcaster" when def blast was a stun and when u killed people in 1 hex with 80% meteor dmg, for the rest of his existance he was a hybrid spellcaster rightclicker. And even then, in these patches you'd rightclick to supplement your damage as invoker has high cooldowns on his pure dmg spells compared to Lina, Zeus etc.
