Why Spending 24 Hours in VR Ocarina of Time was a Haunting Experience

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a game that is engraved into my brain. I know this world... But do I know it in VR? Today, I embark on a quest to spend 24 hours in VR Ocarina of Time and document all my feelings and experiences. The world of Hyrule feels a lot bigger in first person, and the magic it has to offer is only amplified.

So something important to share about this experience: Recorded footage doesn't do it justice. It's like taking a photo of something amazing like the Grand Canyon vs actually being there. With recorded footage and photos, you lose out on so much depth. Worlds appear flattened. With the headset on, this was not the case at all.

Quicksmith Genius I have a idiom I made for that. It’s called “taking off the headset.” It means to return to reality after being in some other paradise world. Whether that’s a LARP camp, or a video game, or just some form of escape, you eventually have to take off the headset and return to reality. Taking off the headset doesn’t diminish any of those experiences you just had, but it simply says that they are over. You experience taking off the headset usually whenever you return from a camping trip, or any trip, for that matter. Hopefully it makes sense enough for you to use it and pass it around.

This was AMAZING, and for the first time in awhile actually made me excited for the future of VR because I have hope that some of our favorite games (like OoT) could actually be reworked for VR so it feels natural (rather than a hackjob, the game being built ground up for VR). Also you connecting the experience to feeling like a kid again was surreal, I have so many ancient memories of playing the game when I was like 7 and going back through VR feels like a timewarp. Basically, I'm shook (in a good way!)

Here I was thinking someone dug up my old Kokiri Forest VR demo.
Sadly, the only other scene I ever released was Zeldas Courtyard, and that was only in early VRChat. I worked on Hyrule Field, Temple of Time, Kakariko Village and Chamber of Sages too, but never released them as there was sadly not much of a demand for them...
But yea. Those scenes I made were more about basking in the scenery. Trade off versus this method is losing content for higher, smoother quality of the visuals. This emu hack method seemed extremely nauseating compared to what I'm used to of those scenes.

Holy shit, you might be the guy who made my very first vr experience all those years ago. I remember kokiri forest, and saw you were working on the others on the oculus forums, but then you disappeared. Even now after all this time and so many games, explaining my experience seeing the great deku tree in vr for the first time is always the story I use to tell people why I love vr. Even if demand wasn't great, if you're the person I'm thinking of, you absolutely introduced me into one of my favourite hobbies and I'll never forget that experience.
Edit: just checked and yep it's you. In your oculus forums thread, I'm right at the top of the second page, "MrKaru". My first post was literally telling you that your demo was tempting me to buy a dev kit. I'm so happy that after all these years I can finally tell you how much I loved that demo.

    • @DarkAkuma
      @DarkAkuma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

It's very nice to hear you had a good memorable experience! I certainly understand the appeal. It was what I wanted to be my first VR experience as well.
I may have disappeared from the oculus forums, but I was still around reddit, VRChat and Skype groups for awhile. I just moved my focuses around, as sadly as I said, there wasn't much interest from people to continue working on what I called "Project: Ocarina". I still work with VR, but mainly with Unity Asset development. That old demo led to my interest in VR and Unity development, so its something I can look back on fondly! =)

Properly calibrating your IPD in the headset will help immensely with long session eyestrain like you experienced in this video. Take this note from someone who's spent over 800 hours on VRChat, in this year alone.

Yes! The one thing nobody talks about. I found out about it by simply being curious about it on my Quest. Turns out I have a perfect 65mm IPD. Haha But I know a lot of people have different very narrow or wider eyes, which can greatly affect comfort.

TL:DR software IPD is bad and correctly set hardware IPD is god's work.
I've actually had two VR headsets, a Lenovo Explorer and a Samsung Oddysey+ (the one I have now), along with being able to demo a Rift S and free near-limitless access to an original vive at my old college.
As a result I have experience with both software and hardware IPD, on my IPD of somewhere between 64.9 and 65.2.
Software IPD seems to work for some people, and even though my eyes are well within the range of most software adjusting headsets, I can set it to my IPD, and it still gives me headaches as if it weren't calibrated; I forced myself to use my Explorer far more often before I got rid of it, and the headaches went away, but simultaneously my IRL vision got really messed up for a while. This is possibly because most software IPD headsets are manufactured with a hardware distance somewhere between 63 and 64mm, I think the Explorer is 63 and the Rift S is 64.
The Samsung O+ and Vive both have hardware adjustment, and I've had playsessions on the vive that lasted most of a school day, and sessions on my Oddysey+ that lasted well into 16 hours minus breaks with no hint of a headache or eyestrain.
The 6DoF VR platform really is amazing, even if you have an oculus Quest; even on that headset the possibilities and immersion are almost limitless, despite the weaker hardware over PCVR. 3DoF headsets aren't quite as nice, but still an okay entry point considering the Oculus Go can be paired with NOLOVR and VRidge for 6DoF down the line.

Just saw this and I have to say man, wow. I mean just the tone of your voice as you are talking about this game is very romantic and passionate. Not just this video though, all the ones you made about The Ocarina of Time. It's heart breaking for me because, at one point, I thought I was one of the biggest fans of this legend but, I have been put in my place. It's not a bad thing however. It's as if I'm reliving the same experience I had when I first played it but through the eyes of someone else, literally enjoying every single aspect of this game. It almost feels like when I first introduced this game to my 5yo nephew. The excitement he got when he faced Queen Gohma for the first time made me smile wide and remembered that it was my exact feeling when I first fought her. It's that feeling of nostalgia that I get from watching these videos. Thank you :) and stay safe out there man.

Started playing at night and when I finally emerged from my contraption and looked out a window, it was already nighttime of the next day.
