Here’s my two cents … give Michelle what she wants, it’s her vehicle, but still give it that fab rats flare. Of all the people at Fab rats I believe Michelle deserves a golden nugget level restoration of her Jeepster. She does so much for the channel and so much for her boys and yet she doesn’t ask a whole lot. It’s always the boys that get their trucks, bikes, go Karts, classic cars and rigs restored or worked on. Michelle, she doesn’t ask for much and yet she gives so much, she deserves the best fab rats boys have to offer…make it a very capable on road and off-road vehicle a daily driver for all situations if you will. Give it the best of both worlds basically. You’re all already replacing the engine so give it a small lift, some wheels, some tires, fix the body up, give it some nice paint, and I think she’ll be very happy with it. Hell give it a stereo for tunes!!! Love you Michelle you deserve this very much, from one your biggest fans!

I tend to agree, she’s been patiently waiting her turn, she’s road tripped in that car that Derek gave to Paul, endured countless breakdowns in it along the way home, she deserves a decent daily driver. We all know she’s never gonna go rock crawling in it, so let’s just remake it in her image, make it safe give it a good motor and trans but make it hers to enjoy.

      @@FabRats Michelle,
You’re so very welcome!! Been watching for a long time and you are one of my favorite people on the channel, your loving nature and adventuress attitude and willing ness to learn and participate are always fun to see. You remind me of my mom, who is the crew chief of our race team. Why should the boys get all the attention? You need a couple all girls episodes! Hope to see the Jeepster become what YOU envision, you deserve it more than anyone.

As for modifications to the Jeepster, it definitely needs some serious safety items, new seats, a paint job and something to keep the rain and snow off the driver and passengers. If you can’t find a hard top, maybe a canvas top will work. Have fun with the build!

Install ORI shocks so she can have it low for daily but built to accept 37-40in tires. Paint it up nicely so she gets compliments & enjoys all the attention. Something she can grow into & wheel with Jamie & the other ladies in your group! She is already so excited & smiles for miles!

Give Michelle what she wants. Body and paint so it's pretty is a for sure. I think likely there's a middle ground on the mechanical side: good suspension, 33/35's, some electric running boards so it's easy to get in and out of, LS swap, etc. But you don't need an off-road monster, you've got plenty of those.

33x12.50 tires on the existing wheels that have been polished. Aftermarket LEAF springs for soft ride and improved travel/articulation. Nice, not killer shocks. She doesn't need it jacked high, but she doesn't need it 4 linked either. But she's already shown that she's not too fond of its current buckboard suspension. Maybe a fairly simple roll cage ( keeping in mind her recent experience with her SUV), maybe a 4.0 I6 from an XJ or a 4.3 V6. Maybe a little LS. What are they? 4.6 or 4.7? Michelle doesn't need a lot of horsepower. I can't see her smoking the tires for giggles. Nice seats. Not race seats. She'll probably be happier with good working 3 point belts than competition harnesses. Radio with gps screen and bluetooth. Make sure the heater/defroster works well and add a/c. Maybe shop for an original hardtop for it for the winter and a/c time in the summer or maybe a soft top. Spare tire mount in back. Durable, but washable carpet on the floor. Nice paint. But hell, if you buffed that red it might look pretty good as it is, even though she seems to want more bling
She probably doesn't need a pair of Badlands 12K winches front and back. Simple rocksliders that would be there more for use as a step than for rock crawling. Make sure the electricals are 100%. Take the gas tank to a radiator shop to get boiled out. Power disc brakes on front. The axles on it are probably stout enough for Michelle, but posi rear and air locker front would be good for winters. Gear it for the tires...What else can I say?

I had a 71’ Commando with a Buick V6, turbo 350 transmission, and a Ford 9 inch. AMC did a great job of hitting the other manufacturers parts bin! I say 39s on 1 tons. LS motor. Clean cage work. And boot beer brown to match my 71! Watch for rust in the bottom of the tailgate and around the rear fenders. JEEPSTER LIFE! 😎

My ideas for what Michelle would want:
    1. A factory hardtop that can still be removed, so she can still drive it in inclement weather.
    2. A RELIABLE drivetrain - nothing too drastic
    3. SLIGHTLY larger tires and wheels - not overly HUGE. Including a SMALL suspension lift.
    4. A BRIGHT color paint job, red, orange or YELLOW.
    5. NICE seats and upholstery, including the door panels
    6. A good heater, and maybe even A/C.

That is actually a Jeepster Commando the original Jeepster was only 2 wheel drive the Commando version was 4 wheel drive. I had a 1969 Commando in 1980 that I built with a small block 400 Chevy engine, a Turbo 400 transmission, full roll cage, 5 point harness and 40 inch tires and it was the most unsafe vehicle that I owned lol. It needed the 5 point harness and roll cage due to the way that I lifted it by mounting the leaf springs on top of the axles. I loved it and it was a attention getter! I wish I could find pictures of it but I can't find them. I regret the day that I gave it away to a relative of mine but I have the memories and can't wait to see what you do to this Commando!

Long arm lift the Jeepster 6-6.5 inches on 35's w/ e-lockers. LS swap w/ 4L80E. Paint it a glossy "Fab Rats" orange and use a soft top for easy removal. Keep the interior the original style seats but cover them in an updated material, leather/vinyl bolsters and cloth centers. Make it somewhat capeable daily driver.

obviously you want the best of both, give her a switch (nothing complicated) so that when she parks she can lower herself so its easy to get in and out of and drive around town in then when you hit the trails, flip the switch the other direction to lift it up so she can rock crawl with the boys. then paint it her favorite color, put a roll cage on it so you can protect your queen and make it functional. (also put some quality of life stuff in it for her so she knows you wanna pamper her properly)

Back in the day my Jeepster had the same engine noise. The drive disc for the fuel pump on the front of the cam wore and the fuel pump arm made a slapping noise. Removed the fuel pump and replaced with electric pump and it ran quiet again. That Buick Dauntless V6 always had plenty of power and very reliable.

I once could have pointed you at a complete 69 Jeepster, with hardtop and usable seats. Grandpa died the year he bought it, and I learned to drive in it in 1973. My family drove it for many years and it ended up on my brother-in-laws country property dragging logs for his cabin, where it got parked for 20+ years. Sadly for you, my sister sold it about 3 years ago to someone who wanted to restore it.

The Jeepster would look good on 37's, but it also would be nice to keep it reasonably easy to get into for Michelle. I think until the new frame is underneath it is going to be hard to gauge tire size as the height of the body to frame will also be a factor in determining tire size. I'm thinking meet in the middle big enough wheels to go some places, but still have good handling and ez of getting in and out steps would be a nice touch. On a side note I laughed when you dropped the camshaft to see if it would brake. Way back in auto tech a guy in the class dropped one by accident out of a 318 and it ended up in 4 pieces I guess it's because it's not chevy strong 😉.

  • @dtnicholls1

Gotta give it the paint job.
Redoing the outside, gotta do the interior properly as well.
As for the rest, keep it mild. A wrangler with a stock suspension setup is still pretty damn capable. A couple of small improvements like better shocks and 35" tyres will be well more than plenty.
Keep the ABS and whatnot as well if you can.
Basically, just give Michelle whatever she wants. She deserves it.

Can't wait to see the build on the Jeepster. On the afm delete I would recommend deleting the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pan. Once the afm components are removed it is no longer needed. Putting a plug in it's place will bump oil pressure 10-20 psi. Not required but I always like seeing 60 psi instead of 40
