Gisenyi is a beautiful town on the shores of Lake in Rwanda. The lake is incredible, surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s a perfect place in Rwanda to spend some time relaxing, learning about the culture, and eating. One of the main Rwandan foods to eat at Lake Kivu is sambaza, a fish similar to sardines.
To begin this food and cultural tour of Gisenyi, Lake Kivu, we first stopped off at the local market, and took a boat ride. They were not allowed to fish on that day to control the fishing, but the fishermen gave us a quick lesson on how they fish, and took us out on a boat just to show us. It was one of the highlights of the day for me. The fishing boats are so peaceful and the rowing songs were amazing.
After having a quick snack of some deep fried sambaza, which were delicious, we continued on to one of the biggest fresh markets in Gisenyi. We saw ladies pounding cassava leaves, and stopped to eat some fruit. The tree tomatoes in Rwanda by the way are delicious.
Ibyiwacu Restaurant - Next we ate a quick Rwandan food lunch at a local restaurant. Buffets are very common in Rwanda, you choose all your different starches, with beans, and a couple of different sauces, and you can choose if you want meat or without meal. Overall, very good and fresh food, a little plain, but good with some extra chili sauce.
    Price - 1,500 RWF ($1.70) per person
Next we headed to a local home for a home cooked African meal, including some of the local ingredients commonly used in the culture around Lake Kivu. Sambaza are a staple, but since we already had some fried, they made a peanut (groundnut) stew with the fish, and also made some vegetable dishes, with rice, and a number of other starches.
The sambaza with peanut sauce was the BEST meal of my entire trip to Rwanda.

@Leonaza7. . .I wouldn't call it enjoyment. It's all a matter of choice. They have none. A lot of countries in Africa hardly see five hours of electricity a week. Would you call that enjoyment? Growing up in Africa, we had no choice but to make do with the hand we were dealt but the aim of almost everyone was to get the hell outta there. Yes it's a fun place to go visit if you are not born in Africa but living there is a whole different ball game.

How to tell if the food is good:
    1. "Meh, it's alright" - Mark cuts out the reaction. Only comments.
    2. "It's great" - Does the surprised, wide eyed reaction and a few "oh wow".
    3. "It's amazing" - Does the closed eyed lean.
    4. "War ending flavor" - After the lean one eye opens slower than the other.

Thanks to Mark Wiens, I learned about "Akabenz" and our taxi driver took us to a locals' spot for the Akabenz experience. Man, it was so good!!!!! Such a memorable experience. Above all, Rwandese are some of the friendliest, chillest people on earth. It was a relaxing and rejuvenating trip. I highly recommend Rwanda, and look forward to going back again soon.

The green vegetable in the video is used throughout the Caribbean (I have a ton in my garden in Canada) and it's from the Amaranth family. In the Caribbean it's called Jamaican Callaloo, spinach or chorai bhaji Usually cooked as it was done here, but we tend to add coconut milk, scotch bonnet peppers and bits of salted cod. (along with garlic, onions and tomatoes at times)

Rubavu is such a vibrant town with a mix of congolese and Rwandese culture. i loved visiting there. we were on vacation 2weeks ago and stayed at Karongi district (about 2hrs from Rubavu) as you head backto Kigali. the place we stayed is called Rwiza village. it has profound views of the islands. and the lake!.... so crystal clear you can swim in the warm water. best part was a boat ride to see the islands, where cows swim to graze from on island to the next. there is a local tourist guide at the town who can show you around, but we used the staff at the hotel (RwiZa Village)l to show us around. they make excellent local food and their cottages just connect you with nature. it would be a memorable experience if you tour. Rwanda is such a beautiful country.

It is. Vacationed there for a month. A business vacay. Stayed mostly at Nyabugogo and Kimisagara towards the end of my visit. Rwandese are the friendliest people. Fell in love with their warm hearts. Amakuru hehe, they just love throwing "urumpha" in between their stories, loosely means "are you following"

That boy rolling that wheel brought back memories of my growing up in Nigeria. That was about the most fun you could have. We didn't have the luxury of a Toys R Us. You had to make/build your own toys.

Lol. I wouldn't call it amazing. It was just necessary. I tried showing my kids how to build a Kite and they looked at me weird. "why don't we just buy it on Amazon"?. I just shook my head.

The green leaf vegetable in the last dish is amaranth. It's called callaloo bush in Jamaica and spinach bhaji in Trinidad and Tobago. It's very nutritious and the seeds of some varieties are used as a cereal grain also called amaranth.
