Russia without Mustafina (they needed her for courage) but with Belokobylskaya, Komova, Afanasyeva and Dementyeva … the quality of this team on floor was finally rewarded when Afanasyeva won gold in EF, but not before. The judges were going through their ‘powerful, accurate tumbling’ phase and not their more recent acquaintance with leg line and all body movement. Inshina mimicked the American style of stiff-leggedly stepping into the next skill, and for five years after this Championships, with a few exceptions FX became a cultural desert as Russia tried to play catch up with the stepping, arm waving and tumbling. It’s a measure of the naivety and idealism of the Russian coaches that they used ‘Sugar Plum Fairy’ as Komova’s introductory music here. Komova could deliver powerful tumbling with all the lightness of a sponge cake and she could dance like a prima ballerina, but the judges didn’t have the eye for it. We were all dragged down to their level when they gifted Wieber the AA a few days after this. Under cover of Biles’ streak ahead of the field from 2015 onwards Russia gradually caught up and then overtook the USA in 2021. This wasn’t just Biles’ decline, the team had also vastly improved in all areas and were able to demonstrate how superior line and technique could elevate gymnastics and separate artistic gymnastics from mere acrobatics. Now Russia is in gymnastics exile and world standards are already falling. It’s a tragedy for the sport and for the gymnasts, female and male, who have done so much over the years. Whilst I grieve for gymnastics I do not forget the larger human tragedy of the violence in Ukraine which also robs their gymnasts of the opportunity to train, compete and even live. God bless Ukraine.
This is the first time I've seen Anna Dementyeva's FX from qualifications in full, because all I recall existing before was piibunina's short clip that ended after the first pass, aside from piibunina's video of her podium training routine that is also lost to only our memories or anyone who downloaded them before the account was terminated over copyrights. I vaguely remember it being a low-13 score and an E score in the 7s, but I didn't even know she had a fall on the double pike, and I wasn't even sure she fulfilled the forward tumbling requirement unless the front-full-turned-flyspring counted. So I checked, it was actually a 12.133; 5.1 D and 7.033 E score. Her full potential D score based on her podium training exercise I think was 6.1 (but counting it again, it seems to be 6.0 so I dunno) so she definitely missed the CR and extra difficulty that the front 1/1 and connection would've given, and at minimum they took away the Memmel and something else.
And even that trip was on beat! God bless Komova for deliver Artistic gymnastics, now we have to watch Power gymnastics, FIG please change the name it’s time
Aparte del nombre, veo pocas similitudes. La forma de Komova era infinitamente mejor. Listunova rompe su forma la mayoría de las veces. No creo haber visto una voltereta HS + un salto mortal frontal sobre viga o un DTY más desordenado.
Can we talk about how gorgeous Demetyeva’s choreography was? Such a shame that she didn’t compete well at those WChamps

La 1ra fue la mejor.
Victoria Listunova me recuerda mucho la elegancia deVictoria Komova😉

Was Dementyeva supposed to do that or was it supposed to be a front layout? I can't find her floor anywhere.
She was supposed to do a front layout with a full twist.
