"....and Donnie is stuck in a coffee can" Nope......28% of him is on the Dude, 70% of him is scattered over the rocks.....and 2% of him made it to the ocean.
4:08 shows the best part of the movie. In the entire film, that is the only sleuth-like thing The Dude does, and it accomplishes absolutely nothing. I love it.
The movie does have a pretty deep meaning, in that it has a pretty straightforward one: Go with the flow, man. The Dude calls to mind many things religious; mostly Jesus' looks and Buddha's life philosophy. He goes with the flow, bares witness to the experiences life presents him, and then keeps on keeping on. He abides. We could all do better to be more like the Dude. Know yourself, take pleasure in the simple things, and just go with life. Anyways, be like the Dude or don't. It doesn't really matter. That's just my opinion, man.
+Tommy Meyer Hmm, I'd offer a different interpretation. The Dude has a good philosophy of going with the flow and not getting emotionally attached to anything, but surprisingly rarely follows it. The film's action is propelled by a recurring cycle: people trying to manipulate the Dude into some shenanigans, the Dude explaining why said shenanigans are not going to work and then getting involved in the shenanigans anyway. Cracked suggested a parallel between the Big Lebowski and Alice in Wonderland. I think this is quite accurate. Alice sings a song at one point about how she gives herself very good advice but very seldom follows it. I think the Dude is very much like Alice in this respect, which makes me wonder why he's so revered.
themarquess I think he's so revered because even though he knows the shenanigans may not be a great idea, he embraces that they're sort of beyond his control and that he's going to have to get involved with them anyways. So, instead of running away from what he's gotta do, he accepts it and goes with it. It's a very zen buddhist kind of mindset: he knows who he is and he bears witness to the experiences life throws at him. And in the end he's a better person for it
Well, the Dude gets a broken TV, a ruined (and missing?) rug, a killed car, likely an assault charge brought by big Lebowski, Maude might charge him with the theft of the Urban Achievers Foundation money rather than impugn the family name by outing her father, loses his friend, Donny resulting in an unfiltered exposure to Walter, untold security deposit issues with his landlord, and on and on. Yet, he gets laid on the positive side, and still has his Creedence. Need balance I suppose.
Own Petard Shit happens in life man. A lot of that stuff was well beyond the Dude's control, so I don't think we can use those misfortunes as warnings not to follow the Dude's lifestyle. I doubt Maud would drag the Dude through a BS theft charge considering he's already done a lot for her and she doesn't seem like an evil person or particularly worried about her father's good name. And if anyone were to get assault charges from the big Lebowski it would be Walter! (who has the dumbest luck of any person ever. He should have gone to jail or died a couple times in just the span of that movie.) Anyways, the point is that you can't control all the bad stuff that happens in life (and it will happen) it only matters how you handle it. And I think the Dude does a fairly good job. He's not perfect by any means. but in general I think his attitude towards certain things is one to emulate
One thing you missed - in the scene where Jesus Quintana is introduced, they are playing a song called "hotel california" being covered by a mexican band. That song was originally written and performed by The Eagles. Later in the movie when the dude is trying to get out of Malibu in a taxi, the taxi driver is playing The Eagles. The dude tells the driver that he hates the eagles, and the driver then kicks the dude out of his car.
Every analysis I've seen of this film has come to a completely different conclusion. It's a movie that seems to have a clear point and clear ideas, but when you have to explain them, they never seem to be universally understood in the same way by everyone. I suppose that's just another reason it gets as much praise as it does. Also, are you planning on analyzing Terry Gilliam's "Brazil"? That is a film I need explained to me a bit more. Keep up the amazing work Garyx Wormuloid!
honest moment here, the fact this movie never went anywhere, never progressed or concluded, the story just.... happened, utterly broke my Aspbergersness. 5 years later, smoking a cigar after a weird strange week of events strolled past my life... It made sense. Life is just strange. and thats normal.
I actually got the vibe that the dude was actually a misunderstood genius. I always thought there was a time before he became so relaxed. Like him trying to get his point across and nobody listened so he gave up and just became the dude.
He does mention being one of the Seattle Seven, so he was clearly very politically active at one time... I imagine at some point he concluded that actively fighting against the system was futile, and that the powers that be would ultimately always win. I think you can even see that in his eyes when he sees George H W Bush talking about Iraq on the news at the beginning. I think there's two ways you can deal with that kind of disillusionment... Either become bitter, cynical and jaded about the whole world, or you become The Dude. You take it easy and just abide... The Dude's lifestyle could even be taken as a form of passive resistance against the system. Just simple non-participation. This was meant to be a really brief reply but then I started thinking about it and it got kinda deep... And now I need to watch the movie again. 🤣
The script notes, apparently say he was an heir to the Rubiks cube foundation, and that is how he has been living, off of that money. I’m guessing by the time the movie rolls around, he is struggling somewhat.
