    • @rajrouj

      I agree. "Bastard in a basket" is simply an expression of love from the father. The son turned out to be deaf...

      Sometimes love is not all you need. The only reason he would have to cut ties is because he's such a selfish narcissist that the thought of sharing anything(in this case business opportunity) with anyone is physically painful to him. So anyone who's not completely on team Daniel can go impale themselves. The only reason he's not the worst person in the entire movie is because he has to share even that with the equally douchy preacher.

    • @xjcforever1x
      @xjcforever1x 5 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      You think that his son in the worst person in the movie? Did you even watch the same movie that I did? Daniel was a terrible father, a murderer, and a person who took advantage of anyone who did not know how valuable their land was. Daniel and Eli were extremely similar characters who just used their ablity to be persuasive in different ways. I'd say you might want to rewatch the movie.

    • @CJ-rg4qu
      @CJ-rg4qu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You're way off in left field Jordan, he was talking about Daniel. Moving speech though.
      Back to the OP though, I think this is looking at the movie in a rosey way. I think he legitimately meant what he said and while he might have tried to be a good father, as he became more of a monster he knew his true intentions. Daniel had very little interaction with him and had no reason to be happy with him given he was going to be competition, given the light they painted Daniel in. Him waking in drunken stupor the next morning is just him upset the boy he took as his own would betray him.

    Ive seen the movie at least 8 times now and it was on my second last viewing that i noticed that Daniel shed a single tear just before getting up and leaving HW on the train. I believe he truly does love HW but it’s at odds with his ambition. The scene is punctuated by Daniel’s inability to look back at the train as is leaves the station. He’s heart broken over the tough decision he must make. His character is way more complex and nuanced than most reviews give him credit for.

    • @brianwalsh1401
      @brianwalsh1401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He's probably sad that all the work he put into having his prop and having him around was out the door. If he really loved the kid, like you said, he wouldn't abandon him. He never abandoned him before when he had less resources, why now? Because he was more work than resource for him and the starting the fire was the last straw.
      Daniel is a sociopath really incapable of loving anybody but was good with the kid in his job as making him look like a dutiful father.

      H.W. is Daniel's only connection to other people. His love for H.W. is genuine, which is what makes Daniel's baptism scene so powerful. There's real repentance when he cries that he's abandoned his boy. However, H.W.'s disability and the estrangement that follows shortly after permanently severs their connection. Daniel can no longer confide in him, or mold him in his own image as he would his son. Instead, after having to kill his false half-brother as well, H.W. becomes a stark reminder of just how isolated Daniel is from everyone else.

    • @clanwaddell5628

      Yes, if Daniel had put HW before the money and oil, he could have been a great father. Before the hearing loss you see their connection. Daniel needed a friend and that's what HW was. But after the hearing loss their relationship changes, HW becomes bitter. Daniel's cynicism won't let him own up to his failings as a father
