    That was such a fun project... The best part of making your own custom handle is you can make it any shape you want. I think the style you made is very smart looking and provides a lot of leverage! Great stuff!

    Great job, the handle colour complimented the shine of the furl & blade shaft.

    Looks terrific. I agree with your comment, no one would expect this was made without a lathe. Very well done.
    A big benefit of the custom handle is being able to make it to fit your hand.

    I can’t believe how nice this turned out. There’s no way anyone could tell that a lathe wasn’t used. Great tip, using the shellac on the end grain too. 🪛

    For a nice article on turning tool handles on drill press see Shoponotes volume #5

  • @Knifeaddictdillon
    @Knifeaddictdillon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you do a Phillips head one you can put it in the drill press upside down and it's easier to form the wood but it wobbles with a flat head.

  • @TheCleric42

    I’m surprised you didn’t add grooves along the length of the handle. The poplar sanded nicely, but maple would’ve looked better in the end.

    • @357magdad
      @357magdad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was gonna add a couple grooves, but I was nervous about getting them straight. I find maple and oak to hard to shape and sand easily with the tools I have.

  • @Rusty_ok
    @Rusty_ok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did one with a chunk of oak and one with a piece I cut off the end of a maple walnut , cherry cutting board. Both turned out pretty but don’t have enough texture. So the grip is a little slippery.

    • @357magdad
      @357magdad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was gonna add fluting to the handle, but I wanted to keep the project simple.

    • @Rusty_ok
      @Rusty_ok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@357magdad I might try to flute mine. I have a two axis vise and think I could do it on the drill press. Might need to get an end mill. ….hmmm maybe the right router bit?

      @357magdad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rusty_ok I did a project where I added fluting with a router bit.
