Had the same problem today as I was hooking up my trailer for the first time. This is a scam how can they sell you a truck with the towing package and no fuse.
    So frustrating.

Great video, thank you. I have the same problem with 2018 F150 STX, that came with hitch and 7-prong plug in. (Though not the whole tow package.) No fuse or even fuse receptacle! Going to just hard-wire power in, hate to drill holes, but Ford customer service hasn't been any use. At some point Ford will have to acknowledge this problem, but I can't wait that long. Best of luck to you guys.

I struggled with this issue for 2 weeks on my 2019 F150. I kept doing the programming with forscan and kept getting the "trailer brake module fault". I was about to give up, I called Ford and they wanted $390 to get it set up. Then I stumbled on this video. Fortunately the '19 includes the pins for the fuse. Today I popped a 30A fuse in the box, enabled the 2 brake module settings and what do you know, it worked! It's unconscionable that Ford sells the vehicle with a trailer towing package without a brake control module, and then make it so difficult (and even underhanded) to install one. I wonder how many people have shelled out $400 for something that should have been included in the package. Thanks for saving me $$$.

@@georgereiske8452 OUCH! Sorry to hear that. Are you sure your checking the correct fuse position? It took me a little bit to figure out the correct slot. Eventually I traded that '19 6cyl for an '20 8cyl and had the same issue. I know the '18 didn't have the pins. Is yours maybe an early '19? Still you should be able to hardwire in a fused wire instead.

This is how most things are made. Most overall can do the top level trim stuff. They disable options, and lower the price you pay, then enable them when you're willing to "upgrade"

@@mateocarlos2674 Turns out my '19 6cyl couldn't do the job towing so I traded it in on a '20 5.0L F150. Ended up having to do the very same thing. While I was in there I deactivated the auto stop/start and enabled "Bambi" mode.

Not sure if everyone is just taking this guys word for it, not saying hes not true, because the 2018 is #24 but.....I'd double check YOUR owners manual for the location of YOUR trailer brake fuse location. I have a 2017 Lariat FX4 with tow package. There is not an OEM trailer brake controller in it. I am installing my old Prodigy 2. My fuse location is 49...Mine already has the 30a fuse in it. • @wilyoung7874

If you guys have 2018 below an xlt or 300a then fuse pins are not present , I believe it is 302A and up package that has the pins in junction box. Easy way to tell what package you may have is if you have stationary rear bed window, then its more than likely 300A has no pins in Junction box. Keep in mind 2018 only. So anyone who bought a 2018 300A then it is a waste of money to get tow package. Unsure about 2019 and if they continued this with junction boxes and trim levels.

  • @wilyoung7874

had a different issue but same problem, no pins in junction box. Ford does this on purpose to prevent people from making upgrades. You could hard wire a line to battery and add inline fuse. For me that option is not what I wanted today so I am upgrading my fuse box, replacing with one for a truck that has more options. Of-course ford wants to make that near impossible to do so you will have to upgrade part of engine bay harness also. Not as hard as it sounds but that is the solution I choose. Good luck on what you decide.

FYI, you can install the factory controller without the pins, you just need to run a fused wire from the battery over to the connector and T-Tap it in. Knowing ford, that wire is actually probably right below the fuse box. I know on my F250, there was actually spare wires through the fire wall for Upfitters, and Plow guys to add stuff. I haven't looked in this one yet, but I bet it is there, if you go over to the ford forums.

I am considering the purchase of a left over 18 F150 XL. It has the $995 "Tow package". I was puzzled to see that below the "Pro Backing Assist", there was only a dummy panel where the controller goes. If you shop for the controller for an XL, Ford says it's not available. Thanks for clarifying this. I assume you simply bought one for an XLT. This is quite a disappointment. If the dealer can't resolve this by providing the OEM controller installed and functional, I'll be shopping elsewhere.

Hello, I have a question and I hope you can help me, I have the F-150 XL 2020 with the most basic display, I have carried out all the steps, in the IPC module only one option appears to activate, I did it and everything is in order, the intensity controller works, but it doesn't appear on the screen when I increase or decrease the braking intensity, nothing appears but it does work, any suggestions? Do I have to activate something else to get the information on the screen?

I also had this issue, and got nothing but dead air from Ford Service USA (e-mail) and Ford Service Social Media (Twitter). They told me there wasn't a Trailer Brake Controller available. My dealer (Downtown Ford of Sacramento) is now installing a workaround after a frustrating week complaining through dealer channels to Ford. I will post details of that workaround should it work.
This video allowed me to show the dealer it wasn't a "programming issue" - and I want to thank you for that. Please send me an e-mail address where I can reach you.

My 2018 f150 lariat has the fuses and wiring from the factory. Don’t understand why when you get the max tow package that the controller is not installed for what you pay extra for the tow package?? But anyway mine was built in Dearborn. Maybe the ones that don’t have the wiring are from another plant?? I’ve installed the factory controller myself and will be activating the modules soon. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it will work.

so not sure if this issue is early 18 models or what.... I just took delivery of my sxt, it was built 4-18 so it is literally a couple months old. Mine has the pins in fuse 24 slot, but no fuse. Just installed my brake controller today. I thought it odd about your comment and sure enough, Etrailer shows the same issue on 17-18 F150's....
So my sxt has power group 101A, and a hitch. So no mention of "tow package" but I believe it depends on how the dealer orders the truck. The only mention of "tow" is the 10spd transmission. My truck does have the "smart tow connector" but does not have the backup assist like yours. It has a factory hitch. So I can't figure out why your truck would have a tow package, with trailer backup assist, bumper wiring, a hitch yet not fuse pins for a brake controller. I did see on etrailer they have a harness to run power, but that really sucks you can't just plug it in like the F250's. Heck i was irritated they didn't include a either fuse for the brake controller. But you not having pins would be worse.

They called me later in the day told me I needed to replace battery junction box due to missing fuse #24 at a cost of 291.14$ and 65 $ labour. I told them I ordered towing package and they told me the salesman should have told me to order the heavy duty towing package. So in short the OEM fix in canada right now is

    Junction box 291 $
    Labour 150$ ish
    600$ ish - OEM

They told me about the Fuse holder and said if you try to cross it, it burns out wires. I told them when I was looking that I have a 33' trailer and they said this truck would tow it. It has the tow package on it. Why would you put a tow package but no way to install the tow breaks? I had to file a grievance with Ford and waiting to hear... Chris Tappe I haven’t tested it via a Trailer but per etrailer and my research I should be good to go. You actually only need a few parts out of the etrailer package. I’ll post it when I get home tomorrow.

The Teconsha Prodigy (if that's what you're getting) is wired to 12 volts hot all the time. It switches itself off when not in use. Tap into a hot wire before it's intended load, install an appropriate breaker, and run to your controller power wire. Check etrailer.com for helpful videos. Use 12 gauge wire. Use 12 gauge for your ground too if that's also not in Ford's plug. The blue wire going back to the 7 pin should already be there.

i went to my local dealership and they said there is no trailer brake module available from Ford yet and they don't know when it is coming out. 2017 is not compatible.

They now have a jumper wire for sale. JL3Z-14A411-C over priced but a solution.

so a 2018 Ford F150 with factory tow package the brake controller wont work and doesnt have a fuse ran? This doesnt make any sense.

I think his f-150 originally doesn't have the factory tow brake and he adds the OEM part to it but finds that fusebox doesn't even have the pin inside. as far as I know, the xlt platform only when you order the max tow package you will have factory installed tow brake. Not sure the stx, but I suspect it's the same. BTW, you might already know, there are trailer tow package (up to 11100lb) and max trailer tow package (up to 13200lb). Only max trailer tow package comes with the brake control.

For anyone having this issue on their 2018 you need part # JL3Z-14A411-C. Its a retrofit kit. In addition there is a good video on installing it th-cam.com/video/dOgYdh1hWPQ/w-d-xo.html
