1980 and 16 years old, I left school and went to work at Vickers Shipbuilding in Barrow in Furness. We made twenty quid a week and for the first time in my life I had more money than I knew what to do with. Earthquake records is where I went each Thursday after work to buy an album. 30,000 feet over China was the first album I bought because John Peel said it was good..... and that was good enough for me. I love this band, they take me right back to the dark, wet, windy, rainy, orange street light nights...waiting for a mate or hitch hiking home afternight school. When I listen to the Passions, I am there once again with Jackie Hillier, experiencing first love walking down Dundee Street....
VERY UNDERRATED - listen to their first 3 albums... I think the first 3 are essential. There is much more better to discover than the "German Filmstar". Then there is a hard to find live album on cassette recorded in a small club West-Berlin in 1979 or 1980 together with The Cure. One side the Cure - the other The Passions.
Sad that this gem of a video has only garnered 8000 odd views 🤔 Makes quite a statement of our inability to appreciate and cherish real talent and musical brilliance 🙏 No wonder the state of today's music and art in general is at an all time dismal low 😔
1 Of My Favorite Bands! Greetings!, all the way from Texas, USA! I found out about this band in 2008, browsing Amazon's Recommendations of previous CD's I had purchased in the past. I gave the samples a listen on "Thirty Thousand Feet Over China - 1981" and was immediately Hooked! I immediately bought a copy of it on CD, right then and there! I have M & M on both Vinyl Import from the UK and CD. I own & bought the CD Twice of Michael & Miranda, and bought 2 times on CD for Thirty Thousand Feet Over China, as well as buying the hard-to-find 1996 Re-Issue on CD UK Import of "1985's Passion Plays". Which have the 7 Inch Single of Africa Mine and 1 of my other favs. "Love Is Essential". Now if Cherry Red would release "Sanctuary - 1982" My CD Collection would be complete. But I also have that Downloaded as well. Another fav on that album is "SMALL TALK" and "Into Night". Great Band!
I saw them on that tour in a French town called Caen, Normandy. Some friends of mine supported them. So obviously I met them. The venue was a cinema by the river.
I actually wasn't a big fan of Sanctuary originally. Only this week I listened to the Rubellen Remastered/Remixed version (recommended by Gogan on The C86 Show) and I was completely blown away by it. Now I've just found this video and it all makes sense now. It really was a great little third album. Brilliant to see Gogan behind a guitar for once too since she was all guitars. Amazing stuff!
Wrote some songs for Morrissey too soon after he left The Smiths. "He Knows I'd Love To See Him", "Piccadilly Palare" and "Oh Phoney" (the guitar demo version is better and brilliant).
We had tickets, for what would have been their denoument and waited outside the venue...sadly in vain...only to hear they had disbanded. I can still recall how gutted we were...

Great band.....Great footage....!
Kevin Armstrong on guitar who played with David Bowie in the mid eighties (played in Bowie's band at Live Aid) and later in Tin Machine.
Wrote some songs for Morrissey too soon after he left The Smiths. "He Knows I'd Love To See Him", "Piccadilly Palare" and "Oh Phoney" (the guitar demo version is better and brilliant).

More Pleeeeease...
How I love these songs
WOW!!!!
I've just refound you, I have been missing out
Unfortunately there was no "second onslaught" - although their legacy was essentially the 4AD early back catalogue
The Passions never recorded for 4AD.
Barbara!
Why kevin Amstrong didnt play guitar in sanctuary
Who is that on keyboards? I gather it was Jeff Smith for the album, but never knew they had a female keyboard player.
That was Penny Tobin, she came on board for our last European tour and some TV dates. She’d previously played with the Eurythmics and JJ Burnel.
