The sound of the Echoplex reverb, combined with the signal fading in and out just made it all seem so other-worldly.
Fantastic song performed on a fantastic live music show: Oxford Road Show (BBC Manchester). A genuine attempt to produce a program that meant something and listened to the views of young people. Died in 1985. Shame.
Richard Williams TOTP expected you to mime (or "lip sync," for the benefit of Americans)-but somehow I'm not surprised that you were expected to sing live, after all, considering that the producers of the Oxford Road Show were well known for "keeping it real."
I had forgotten about this track and pleased that I have come across it again so many years later. It really is a one-off song that will continue to be appreciated for a long, long time, similar to another one-off of a 'A Girl Like You' by Edwyn Collins. The lyrics are very simple but wonderfully poignant.

enjoyed this - haven't seen this performance before and great to see a partial performance of another track (was it why me) recently managed to get a cd version of 30,000ft to replace my old vinyl (and hence tape)
Cam Adair , not as far as we know although it has been used in numerous TV programmes including Ashes to Ashes and The Line of Beauty. It was also used on Grand Theft Auto - Vice City Stories.
Someone should find the original tapes and throw up the entire performance of "Why Me" and whatever else they may have done that day. The Passions pretty much created Dream Pop. The Cocteau Twins perfected it and ran with it.
