Though nowhere even close to the humidity of the South, our days in L.A. get so uncomfortably hot here. This sounds better! In centuries past, beet sugar was cheap and cane sugar expensive (with white sugar being even more so), so it was the low-class cake for a long time. A pure white cake was for the rich, as a white cake requires white flour and white sugar, both of which were expensive to buy, and it's why wedding cakes are usually white (to show off).

Real red velvet cake is a chocolate cake with a cream cheese frosting. If you cannot taste the chocolate, then it is a poor representation of a red velvet cake.
Unless you're in the South. Then a boiled icing is called for. (You don't want cream cheese in the heat.)

Though nowhere even close to the humidity of the South, our days in L.A. get so uncomfortably hot here. This sounds better! The only real cake topping I like is icing made from powdered sugar and lemon juice and rind (on my mom’s lemon cake), or whipped cream. The buttercream style of frostings have always been a bit much for me. Thanks!
as someone who works in a bakery, red velvet cake is NOT chocolate, contrary to popular belief. it has a hint of cocoa but the flavor comes from the creamcheese frosting :)

My aunt worked in tower 2 and she brought her daughter, my cousin, to work that day for a job interview. My uncle was NYPD assigned there that day, my fiance at the time had a job interview near there, and I went to business school a block over. For various reasons, we were all lucky enough to survive. THOUSANDS did not. Police, EMTs, Fire men and women, employees, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, even a priest all lost their lives in those vicious attacks that day. His "joke" isn't funny. It's a mockery of a great loss and the only reason you find it funny is because you've never been touched by so great a tragedy and I pray that you never are. Shame on him for the insensitivity and the level of disrespect in the comment. Even more shame on the editor of this video for not only leaving the comment in, but for stopping the background music immediately after which only highlights the comment more. P.S. Red velvet is a joke and a con. Most people don't know it's just a ton of red food coloring mixed in chocolate cake or when they say blue or any other color velvet is just a ton of the color w/chocolate or white cake. A beet cake is still a chocolate cake but with natural color. Nothing special about it.

This may have been stated previously, but red velvet cake was first created using beet sugar, which retained the red color of the beet and thus made the cake red. In centuries past, beet sugar was cheap and cane sugar expensive (with white sugar being even more so), so it was the low-class cake for a long time. A pure white cake was for the rich, as a white cake requires white flour and white sugar, both of which were expensive to buy, and it's why wedding cakes are usually white (to show off).
